STAR Expands National Bronze & Metals Facility
to Create Foundry, Offices, and Warehouse
STAR recently completed a 115,000
square foot addition to the National
Bronze & Metals foundry in Sheffield
Township of Lorain County by using
several different methods of construction
to best match the needs of the project:
tilt-up concrete, steel building and wood
construction.
“The national Bronze & Metals foundry
was a challenge because of the size of the facility and the number of functions it
needed to be able to hous, “said STAR’s Todd Mealwitz, project manager for the
addition. “The project was truly a design-build project with daily challenges and
changes by the owners, engineers and employees of NBM. Construction of the
foundry began with a shell of a building and ended with a full operational foundry, a
complicated, yet well coordinated project.”
Star expaned and modernized the existing 24,500 warehouse to include an office,
warehouse and foundry.
The two-story 6,000 square foot office replaced the original office and is now
constructed of wood with metal siding. The 45,834 square foot warehouse and
finishing area was created using tilt-up concrete construction with exterior windows
in the new finishing area for natural lighting energy savings. The largest area of the
addition, the foundry, encompassed over 63,000 square feet to include and equipment
platform, employee locker room and interior office. Needing to house two 10-ton
overhead cranes, the 45 foot tall foundry is a steel building with concrete base walls.
John Schmalz, STAR Architecutral Group’s designer, assisted in the layout and
design of the manufacturing process platform that includes six precast 13 feet deep
quenching pits, with more than 40 foundation pads for the structural mezzanine.
The facility will manufacture aircraft industry grades of alumninum bronze and a
variety of lead-free, bronzes, and standard alloys. STAR’s efficient design-build
process ensures up-front planning and smooth coordination of the building phase. As
a result, this entire project took just 21 months. This is quite an accomplishment for a
facility of this magnitude and complexity. The original 24,500 sq. ft. warehouse was
constructed by STAR in 2005.

Let us Help You Move Your Project Forward in 2015
It seems like everything you’ve read or heard over the
past year or two has not been good news as it pertains
to the economy. We’ve seen major corporations closing
their doors, financial institutions crumbling, record high
home foreclosures and unemployment rates climbing to
levels many of us have not seen in our lifetime. Working in the construction industry, we have seen
and heard the many challenges our clients have faced and are facing in regards to surviving this
economy. Many of you have implemented solid, creative strategies and taken drastic measures to
ensure your company is in a strong position to flourish when the economy rebounds. Many experts
believe we have seen the bottom and the rebound is occurring.
At STAR, we have always seen challenges as opportunities. We too, have used this time to evaluate
the way we operate and how we can be more efficient without compromising our quality and service.
We discovered that many businesses found it challenging to get contractors to respond to smaller
project needs. We recieved calls from business owners who were trying to get “their contractors” to
help and finally gave up in frustration and called STAR to step in.
We’re addressing this shortcoming in the industry by launching STAR Complete, a new division
that will specialize in small building and repair projects. Since 1955, we’ve been providing business
owners with outstanding quality and services on any size building project. STAR Complete gives us
an opportunity to formalize and expand our small project service offerings. We’ve already seen early
success servicing the needs of a national chain as well as helping many local businesses with their
small project needs.
The activity level in our estimating and architectural department has also been high. It appears the
activity level is on the rise and we are working with many clients in various market segments ranging
from Industrial/Manufacturing, Churches, Healthcare, Elderly Care and Commercial/Retail. We
reamin optimistic that 2015 will be a year that begins the road to recovery for America. Now is the
time to begin planning for the future. Our team of professionals are here to help you with that process.
We can help with preliminary designs and budgets and creating a program that will help your
company through the process.

NOMS Offices Completed 45 Days
Ahead of Schedule
Construction was recently completed on a 3-story
tilt-up concrete facility for Northern Ohio Medical
Specialists (NOMS) in Sandusky, Ohio. It is designed
to be a one-stop shop for medical exams, tests, therapy
and fitness. The building has standard medical
offices and labs, and a wellness center that required
some creative architecture as it features an indoor pool
and elevated running track suspended from the ceiling
structure.
The building was finished 45 days ahead of schedule
thanks to the efficiency of our design-build system and
the tilt-up concrete method. STAR designers worked
with NOMS to design the interior to meet the needs of
all of their practitioners and the testing facilities and
labs that support them.
“The NOMS facility had a variety of special
construction needs, since it includes not only standard
office spaces, but also wellness facilities and testing
labs.” said STAR President, Kim Mulder. “Our tilt-up
construction method allowed us to give NOMS a
facility tailored to their diverse needs, with less time
and expense than traditional construction methods.”
The NOMS building also features an Urgent Care
Center to serve Sandusky residents. The fitness center
offers memberships to the public. The NOMS building
is located at 2500 West Strub Road in Sandusky.
Avon Lake Veterinary Clinic
Expands to Offer Pet Spa Services
Working with local municipalities to obtain building
approval is a STAR speciality and has helped many
customers in the past. We were happy to work with
Dr. Jim Haddad of the Avon Lake center to gain zon-
ing board approval for the new building. We helped
Avon Lake Animal Care Center navigate the process
of getting the land near their existing location rezoned
to commercial zoning so they could open a pet spa to
complement their veterinary practice.
“Working with STAR’s on-staff architect helped us get
exactly the layout we wanted.” said Dr. Haddad. “The
facility needed to be very specialized to meet all of our
needs and offer the desired level of service to our cus-
tomers and their pets.
By using a pre-engineered steel building method, STAR
met Dr. Haddad’s requirements for building quickly
and affordably. We also worked with him to customize
the inside of the building to his specifications. The new
building features suites with private play areas, indoor
and outdoor fenced playgrounds, and a lazy river pool.
The spa, Paws by the Lake, is located at 33757 Lake
Road, at the corner of Lake Road & Miller Road in
Avon Lake.
