OMENS IN THE ODYSSEY

T HE Odyssey is principally the story of a return. A man has spent
ten years fighting a war in a distant country and another ten years
trying, against all sorts of obstacles and distractions, to get home to his
wife and family. Will he make it?
The imaginary listener sitting by the fireside when the Odyssey was
first recited, and the countless readers of the poem who have followed
after, knew that he would make it; Odysseus would get home. They
knew it and we know it not only through a familiarity with the myth
(which can be assumed even for Homer's first audience) but also be-
cause we are told, in the very opening of the first book, that the gods are
on the side of Odysseus. Athena receives verbal assurance from Zeus
that Odysseus will return. It is only a matter of time.
We may know that Odysseus will return, but Odysseus and the other
characters in the story certainly do not. And, as in most good stories, we
find ourselves standing beside the characters; we are involved in the
action with them and we see it unfolding from their point of view. As it
unfolds, they (and we) are given certain assurances, pledges of Olympian
concern in the story, indications that the gods are behind the action and
that all will turn out well in the end. To give these pledges their most
general term, they are omens or portents. These omens are in one sense
more significant for us, the readers, who know the divine plan for
Odysseus' return, than they are for the characters, who have to take
them as signs of hope for the future. But we are asked to suspend our
superior knowledge in the press of the action, so that for us, too, these
occurrences are truly ominous, pointing to the future, but shrouded in
mystery and with their full significance hidden from view.

(U) WHAT INSIGHTS ARE DERIVED FROM OPERATION ANACONDA IN REGARDS TO THE NCO COMMON CORE COMPENTENCY (NCOCCC) OF OPERATIONS?
The NCOCCC of Operations is a combination of operational skill sets that, when mastered by senior leaders can save lives and ensure effective unified action. Some of its key tenets include: Large-scale combat operations; understanding operational and mission variables; resolving complex, ill-structured problems with the use of Mission Command; and understanding how to integrate the different branches of the military into successful joint operations (Department of the Army [DA], 2020, pp. 2-3). This final principle of conducting joint operations becomes increasingly important as contemporary conflicts continue to venture further into the realm of multi-domain warfare (Marr, 2018, pp. 10-11). In order to execute such a complex task, Joint Force Commanders (JFC) must “integrate, synchronize, and direct joint operations” through the use of seven Joint Functions (Joint Chiefs of Staff [JCS], 2017, p. III-1). One of these functions, Command and Control, is how the JFC directs the forces toward accomplishment of the mission, and its essential task is to “Communicate and ensure the flow of information across the staff and joint force” (JCS, 2017, p. III-2). This task is critical to the creation of a shared understanding, which allows the separate branches to work seamlessly together toward a common goal. The absence of this unifying component hinders missions and increases casualties. In Operation ANACONDA, JFC Major General (MG) Hagenbeck failed to create such a shared understanding with his subordinate Air Force assets, which contributed to increasing the amount of casualties his forces incurred. Although the warning order was published on 6 January, MG Hagenbeck did not notify the Combined Force Air Component Commander of Operation ANACONDA until 23 February, just days before the operation began (Fleri et al., 2003). This failure to ensure the flow of information across the joint force, caused downstream effects in planning and preparation that led to diminished air support during the initial stages of the operation. As noted by Lambeth (2005) in his comprehensive analysis, “because so little air support had been requested…coalition troops entered the fight virtually unprotected by any preparatory and suppressive fire” (pp. 204-205). Operation Anaconda provides a clear case of how proficiency in the realm of Operations can result in fewer U.S. casualties.

The company's total number of employees is estimated to be 2.2 million employees across its different stores. A cash flow statement is an important financial statement. A cash flow statement is understood as the financial statement that summarizes the financial or cash amounts. Patient noticed the problem started two weeks ago and sometimes it is accompanied by dizziness. He states that he has been under stress in his workplace for the last month. Patient denies chest pain, palpitation, shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting.

(Monica)Gender rarely shapes individual experience in isolation but is instead linked to other social statuses in the effects it has on our lives. The gender distinction reflects what we see as appropriate “masculine” or “feminine.” For example, some societies expect men to be more aggressive and competitive and women to be emotionally nurturing. I was playing with dolls one day and was playing with two dolls: a female doll and a male doll. Upon passing by, an uncle of mine saw me playing with my toys and frowned. When I asked what was wrong, he seemed uncomfortable. In this statement, he suggested that girls should act like girls and play with girlie things, while boys should play with boy things, including boy dolls. The family experiences that taught me about gender and gender roles are vividly in my memory. Throughout my childhood, my mother and father stressed how essential it is for me to understand and know that I am a girl, and I should always act and carry myself accordingly.
I found conversations like that to be overly exaggerated at the time, but I subsequently understood why my parents did what they did. We were a family of six, with five girls and one boy. As a child, my parents, specifically my mother, stressed what clothing the girls wore. Our mother was always careful not to let us wear anything provocative, and we were to get married and have our own families. Girls are often told that it's alright to cry because girls cry, and if I was a boy, I'd be made to suck it up and deal with it. In addition, my mother taught me that women nurture and that we take care of the home, including cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. As girls, we could not play any sports that were deemed "too rough" or to be performed by boys. From a young age, we chose professional careers. All these careers involved female dominating industries, such as nursing, teaching, caretaking, and hairdressing. They all contributed to the construction of my gender.
Multiple ways are available to conceptualize gender; essentialists see it as a binary division, which classifies you as male or female at birth. In contrast, mainstream social scientists take a constructionist approach to gender. Page 242 argues that gender is a constructed concept that has been shaped through culture and history. (Monica) A summary of my decision-making process starts with flipping through ads to find a job, I was concerned with what companies offered for pay, the type of work I would be doing, and how long would the job last. There were a few companies that were only looking to hire temporarily and again not an ideal situation if I am already concerned with having a steady income. Between the three ads, Office temp, a server at a restaurant making $2.13hr plus tips with hours varying, and a warehouse position, starting at $14Hr with hours from 12 pm to 7 pm. I chose to pick the warehouse position since it offers the most money and a set schedule. Continuing with the simulation, my monthly take-home pay after taxes is $1,224, making my weekly pay only $306. Ideally $1,224 is not enough funds to help sustain a family, barely one person. During this time, I have to pick my insurance, which is a requirement through the Affordable Care Act. Luckily my child is covered and I picked the cheapest plan that I could afford, the bronze plan and it costs $303 a month, which averages to almost $76 a paycheck. I have to ensure I have a place to live, paying rent over $720 and traveling puts my monthly rental and traveling costs at more than 800 dollars a month. The results of me living further away from my job, so that my rent is lower also increased gas costs. According to the simulation, every working household that saves a dollar spends 77 cents on transportation. My balance jumps from $1000 to $192 after paying rent only to find out my apartment is too small for my things, so I chose to have a yard sale. I only made $150 from the yard sale and made the decision to get paid by the piece, since I am barely making a living wage on an hourly paycheck, and in doing so my paycheck decreased by 25cents. I skipped my grandfather’s memorial service because I can not afford to travel, I paid $25 to replace a broken item I fixed, even though considered hiding the evidence. Grocery shopping is next on my to-do list, spending only 30 for things I needed, I felt was hardly enough food, but could not really afford to splurge and spend on extra things. During this time my stress levels are at an all-time high, but I turn the offer for a cigarette down because I do not want to get addicted. As a result, the simulation states there is a misconception that smoking relieves stress during difficult situations in life.
Now that I have come to payday, I decided to start my fitness journey by asking a friend to be my running partner. On the way to work, something blew in the car and needed to get fixed, and asking a friend to look at the issue saved money. The landlord decided to raise rent and $150 had to be paid or I could spend more on legal fees fighting it in court. (Kaitlyn)To be very honest I know next to nothing about mythology, it has never been something that I have had around me or taught in school, I guess it was one of those subjects that got kind of, overlooked. But history is history and in my opinion, it’s important to know what happened in the past to prevent future mishaps or wrongdoings. Therefore I don't know anything about mythology to start, but I am eager to learn more about all these different gods, goddesses, etc., and am surprised to find out that entire towns or civilizations would support the myths or people I am reading about.
The gods and goddesses seem to all have their sanction of what was claimed as their own, one wraps his arms around the earth floating the continents with his aqua arms, and another is essentially the undertaker and decides whose soul belongs where. The people are peasants and they are unequal to those that are considered the higher power, they are the protected and shall not reach out to become a protector. From what I have read it doesn't seem like the gods step on each other’s territory or have competitions to push each other out, it seems as though all that made it up there are respected and get to look down on those that are less than them.
While reading I noticed that there is a bit of a divide between men and women the same as we have today. A big part of societal issues today is gender equality and the general outlook on how each gender is portrayed without any prior information. Men are supposed to be large, strong, and tall, to protect and conquer for the interest of mankind. Women are supposed to be dainty and spread love, make a house a home, and show endearing qualities. I can see the reverse argument for Cupid who is the God of Love being that Eros is a male, being portrayed as the, "fairest of the deathless gods," (Hamilton, 36) but that is one instance in an array of different people. It seems that even though we have come a long way to today with working on gender-specific stereotypes, for these "myths" to be ancient and long ago, it doesn't seem like we have come that far. Yes women are seen as loving and they can be attractive to people around them, but in the man’s brain, they are simply there to be of service to the man, and to man the home when they are not present. It's interesting because even though the language of the reading may be hard for me to get used to, being that it is not in modern English, I can still very well understand one thing. Women like Aphrodite would "...[laugh] sweetly or mockingly at those her wiles had conquered, the irresistible goddess who stole away even the wits of the wise" (Hamilton, 32). (Harry)Dante’s Inferno is the first of the three-part epic poem, Divine Comedy, written by Dante Alighieri. The Inferno depicts Dante’s journey through Hell, accompanied and guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. In his poem, Dante describes Hell’s topography consisting of nine circles, each representing the seriousness of the sin committed by its offenders, these sins are categorized (by the Catholic Church), grouped, and commonly known as the nine deadly sins. Each level of Hell represent places of torment where the first level is home to less serious offenders, and increase in severity in each circle. As they go deeper into each level, our characters, Dante and Virgil encounter offenders within each ring of hell who have committed more serious offenses and the sins are more egregious. We find that the lowest part of hell houses the betrayers, and punishment here is more severe. Punishment in the poem is handed out in a poetic justice fashion Dante calls contrapasso. In this last (deepest) level or ring of Hell the betrayers of Julius Caesar: Brutus and Cassius are prime tenants, along with Judas, who had betrayed Jesus.
As I read this poem, I can agree with how Hell was organized, and as it sits currently, those guilty of child sexual abuse could reside along with those who are being tortured in the second circle: Lust. But Dante seemed to portray these sins as less severe. But personally, I think that those guilty of committing child sexual abuse should be in the ninth circle of Hell, along with those committing treachery because what is child sexual abuse if not treachery! It is treacherous against the innocent children, who fall betrayed by those who they must respect and obey (adults or those older then they), it is an act of treason to the victim who may have trusted the person committing such a heinous act. But after much contemplation, I still cannot agree with this placement. Child sexual abuse and child sexual assault is, in a very real way, equal to those types of betrayals. The innocence of a child makes those crimes so bad that I feel so uncomfortable writing about. As defined on their website, child sexual abuse includes: any sexual act between an adult and a minor, or between two minors, when one exerts power over the other, forcing, coercing or persuading a child to engage in any type of sexual act, non-contact acts such as exhibitionism, exposure to pornography, voyeurism, and communicating in a sexual manner by phone or Internet. In Dante’s world, those guilty of child sexual assault are far more wicked than those guilty of other sexual sins, and even worse than those guilty of aberrant sexual behavior (as it was understood at the time). Therefore, these sinners would have their very own special place below the ninth circle.

Unfortunately, this is a widespread problem known as scope creep during an IS development. Scope creep is an unexpected demand that moves a project past its predetermined limits. Projects are always documented with a planning outline, which covers in-depth details on boundaries, schedules, major deliverables, time, and budget. Unfortunately, individuals involved in the project may intentionally or unintentionally cause a project to not meet its goals due to the unpredictable nature of adding tasks to a project in progress. Project managers can ensure that the scope is clear by referring to the project planning outline, where all the boundaries and parameters of the project stipulate all deliverables. Spending extra time finalizing the plan can dial in a clear and detailed scope for everyone involved in the project. A project manager needs to engage directly with the clients by speaking with them and thoroughly walking them through all the parameters and deliverables. Closely collaborating with clients throughout the various stages of the project can prevent hiccups that may occur. If issues arise during project development, it is always best to be transparent with the client about every problem. Being able to work through solutions with clients will ease the anxieties as strategies are planned. To ensure deliverables are to the client's expectations, necessary features should be identified as critical for delivering a usable end product. For example, managing a scope creep can be difficult if not handled correctly. However, managing change in a project development does not have to be a battle of wills. Knowing how to address change can be beneficial. It can be outlined in the project planning document with parameters that will deliver the best product for the client without derailing the project. At that time, my only education on feminism or feminist issues had come from my parents during homeschooling. I clearly remember getting into a heated debate with a classmate whom I considered "the feminist equivalent of a vegan," (referring to the stereotypical joke, "How do you know if someone is a vegan? Don't worry, they'll tell you,") and I told her I simply could not see any situations in real life where women aren't being represented without a real reason. She introduced me to the term Bechdel Test, and encouraged me to spend a few weeks watching my usual shows, but counting how many times the female characters spoke to each other about anything other than men.
As my understanding of feminism and of the world around me has evolved, I have seen an increase in media that passes the Bechdel Test, but have also been surprised to find it is significantly less common than I expected. Additionally, the Bechdel Test only looks at named female characters who discuss something other than men. It does not look at factors of race, sexuality, topics of conversation, or visual presentation. Some argue that although media increasingly passes the test, the quality of that media is lacking and therefore the value of the Bechdel Test does not hold up (How does the Bechdel Test measure up in evaluating film representations of women, 2021). More detailed studies show that women remain underrepresented in media, both behind and before the camera (Smith et. al, 2016). The female characters that are portrayed in trend towards being young and traditionally attractive, reinforcing the "ideal" image as the standard and further raising the standard for the average woman. Additionally, women of color and women belonging to other racial or social minority groups are even less visible, impacting the expectations that society has of women based on how they are shown, and influencing what women consider "normal" in themselves.

MedStar Health Inc, a leader in the healthcare industry regionally and nation-wide, is a constant target of the malicious attempts of cyber criminals. Over the past 6 years MedStar Health Inc. has faced several instances of data breach most notably, the 2016 breach that compromised 370 computer systems and halted its operations. As the organization continues to digitize and broaden the use of electronic medical records across its facilities, the threat of cyber-attack remains even more pervasive. The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of MedStar Health Inc cybersecurity vulnerabilities, examine the overall causes and impact of the breaches and explore solutions to meet the organization’s cybersecurity challenges.
With a focal point on MedStar Health breaches, a literature-based study was conducted, and various news articles, academic journals and company publications were analyzed. It was found that the 2016 and 2020 data breaches were attacks on the organization’s internet servers. The 2020 hack compromised the records of 668 patients, whereas the 2016 hack was a result of a ransomware infection that compromised 7500 individuals’ records and halted the organizations’ operations. The cost of the virus infection was greater than the $19,000 ransom requested due to additional recovery and remediation costs. It was also revealed that the 2019 breach was due to human error.
To best combat the efforts of cyber criminals, it is recommended that MedStar Health Inc. place greater emphasis on cyber awareness training for employees/professionals, implementing multiple factor authentications and a strong password and identity management system to reinforce its IT infrastructure against future hacks. Failure to effectuate these measures pose significant risk to MedStar Health Inc., its affiliates and patients that extend beyond ransom payments, fines, imprisonment, lawsuits and costs incurred for subsequent identity theft protection services. The damage caused by data security breaches may prove fatal for patients, the company’s most valued asset, compromising public perception and the company’s mission to provide the highest quality of medical care and build long-term relationships with the patients they serve.)

Before describing the analog transmission of digital data there are a few terms that we should be familiar with, modem, encoding and carrier wave. A modem is modulator, demodulator device that converts digital to analog and analog to digital. Encoding is the conversion of data to a format required and in this case the conversion of digital data to analog data. Carrier wave is a basic wave of constant frequency transmitted through a circuit.
To transmit digital data in an analog format first you must be connected to a modem which encodes the data and converts the digital data into analog data. It does this by populating the analog signal with a carrier wave and modulating the characteristics of the carrier wave which allows for the analog data to be encoded to digital data and digital data to be decoded to analog.
Digital Transmission of Analog Data
An example of the digital transmission of analog data would be Voice over IP (VOIP) or a more modern and relatable example would be a Zoom meeting. This is done through a couple different technologies a Codec and Pulse-code modulation (PCM). Codec stands for Code, Decode and it is a device or software that converts analog signal into digital form and vice versa. PCM on the other hand converts analog to digital by sampling the analog signal at regular intervals, measuring the amplitude of each sample, and then encoding or quantizing the amplitude as binary data. Through this sampling analog data such as your voice is encoded into digital data via the technologies previously mentioned.

(Monica)Gender rarely shapes individual experience in isolation but is instead linked to other social statuses in the effects it has on our lives. The gender distinction reflects what we see as appropriate “masculine” or “feminine.” For example, some societies expect men to be more aggressive and competitive and women to be emotionally nurturing. I was playing with dolls one day and was playing with two dolls: a female doll and a male doll. Upon passing by, an uncle of mine saw me playing with my toys and frowned. When I asked what was wrong, he seemed uncomfortable. In this statement, he suggested that girls should act like girls and play with girlie things, while boys should play with boy things, including boy dolls. The family experiences that taught me about gender and gender roles are vividly in my memory. Throughout my childhood, my mother and father stressed how essential it is for me to understand and know that I am a girl, and I should always act and carry myself accordingly.
I found conversations like that to be overly exaggerated at the time, but I subsequently understood why my parents did what they did. We were a family of six, with five girls and one boy. As a child, my parents, specifically my mother, stressed what clothing the girls wore. Our mother was always careful not to let us wear anything provocative, and we were to get married and have our own families. Girls are often told that it's alright to cry because girls cry, and if I was a boy, I'd be made to suck it up and deal with it. In addition, my mother taught me that women nurture and that we take care of the home, including cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. As girls, we could not play any sports that were deemed "too rough" or to be performed by boys. From a young age, we chose professional careers. All these careers involved female dominating industries, such as nursing, teaching, caretaking, and hairdressing. They all contributed to the construction of my gender.
Multiple ways are available to conceptualize gender; essentialists see it as a binary division, which classifies you as male or female at birth. In contrast, mainstream social scientists take a constructionist approach to gender. Page 242 argues that gender is a constructed concept that has been shaped through culture and history. (Monica) A summary of my decision-making process starts with flipping through ads to find a job, I was concerned with what companies offered for pay, the type of work I would be doing, and how long would the job last. There were a few companies that were only looking to hire temporarily and again not an ideal situation if I am already concerned with having a steady income. Between the three ads, Office temp, a server at a restaurant making $2.13hr plus tips with hours varying, and a warehouse position, starting at $14Hr with hours from 12 pm to 7 pm. I chose to pick the warehouse position since it offers the most money and a set schedule. Continuing with the simulation, my monthly take-home pay after taxes is $1,224, making my weekly pay only $306. Ideally $1,224 is not enough funds to help sustain a family, barely one person. During this time, I have to pick my insurance, which is a requirement through the Affordable Care Act. Luckily my child is covered and I picked the cheapest plan that I could afford, the bronze plan and it costs $303 a month, which averages to almost $76 a paycheck. I have to ensure I have a place to live, paying rent over $720 and traveling puts my monthly rental and traveling costs at more than 800 dollars a month. The results of me living further away from my job, so that my rent is lower also increased gas costs. According to the simulation, every working household that saves a dollar spends 77 cents on transportation. My balance jumps from $1000 to $192 after paying rent only to find out my apartment is too small for my things, so I chose to have a yard sale. I only made $150 from the yard sale and made the decision to get paid by the piece, since I am barely making a living wage on an hourly paycheck, and in doing so my paycheck decreased by 25cents. I skipped my grandfather’s memorial service because I can not afford to travel, I paid $25 to replace a broken item I fixed, even though considered hiding the evidence. Grocery shopping is next on my to-do list, spending only 30 for things I needed, I felt was hardly enough food, but could not really afford to splurge and spend on extra things. During this time my stress levels are at an all-time high, but I turn the offer for a cigarette down because I do not want to get addicted. As a result, the simulation states there is a misconception that smoking relieves stress during difficult situations in life.
Now that I have come to payday, I decided to start my fitness journey by asking a friend to be my running partner. On the way to work, something blew in the car and needed to get fixed, and asking a friend to look at the issue saved money. The landlord decided to raise rent and $150 had to be paid or I could spend more on legal fees fighting it in court. (Kaitlyn)To be very honest I know next to nothing about mythology, it has never been something that I have had around me or taught in school, I guess it was one of those subjects that got kind of, overlooked. But history is history and in my opinion, it’s important to know what happened in the past to prevent future mishaps or wrongdoings. Therefore I don't know anything about mythology to start, but I am eager to learn more about all these different gods, goddesses, etc., and am surprised to find out that entire towns or civilizations would support the myths or people I am reading about.
The gods and goddesses seem to all have their sanction of what was claimed as their own, one wraps his arms around the earth floating the continents with his aqua arms, and another is essentially the undertaker and decides whose soul belongs where. The people are peasants and they are unequal to those that are considered the higher power, they are the protected and shall not reach out to become a protector. From what I have read it doesn't seem like the gods step on each other’s territory or have competitions to push each other out, it seems as though all that made it up there are respected and get to look down on those that are less than them.
While reading I noticed that there is a bit of a divide between men and women the same as we have today. A big part of societal issues today is gender equality and the general outlook on how each gender is portrayed without any prior information. Men are supposed to be large, strong, and tall, to protect and conquer for the interest of mankind. Women are supposed to be dainty and spread love, make a house a home, and show endearing qualities. I can see the reverse argument for Cupid who is the God of Love being that Eros is a male, being portrayed as the, "fairest of the deathless gods," (Hamilton, 36) but that is one instance in an array of different people. It seems that even though we have come a long way to today with working on gender-specific stereotypes, for these "myths" to be ancient and long ago, it doesn't seem like we have come that far. Yes women are seen as loving and they can be attractive to people around them, but in the man’s brain, they are simply there to be of service to the man, and to man the home when they are not present. It's interesting because even though the language of the reading may be hard for me to get used to, being that it is not in modern English, I can still very well understand one thing. Women like Aphrodite would "...[laugh] sweetly or mockingly at those her wiles had conquered, the irresistible goddess who stole away even the wits of the wise" (Hamilton, 32). (Harry)Dante’s Inferno is the first of the three-part epic poem, Divine Comedy, written by Dante Alighieri. The Inferno depicts Dante’s journey through Hell, accompanied and guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. In his poem, Dante describes Hell’s topography consisting of nine circles, each representing the seriousness of the sin committed by its offenders, these sins are categorized (by the Catholic Church), grouped, and commonly known as the nine deadly sins. Each level of Hell represent places of torment where the first level is home to less serious offenders, and increase in severity in each circle. As they go deeper into each level, our characters, Dante and Virgil encounter offenders within each ring of hell who have committed more serious offenses and the sins are more egregious. We find that the lowest part of hell houses the betrayers, and punishment here is more severe. Punishment in the poem is handed out in a poetic justice fashion Dante calls contrapasso. In this last (deepest) level or ring of Hell the betrayers of Julius Caesar: Brutus and Cassius are prime tenants, along with Judas, who had betrayed Jesus.
As I read this poem, I can agree with how Hell was organized, and as it sits currently, those guilty of child sexual abuse could reside along with those who are being tortured in the second circle: Lust. But Dante seemed to portray these sins as less severe. But personally, I think that those guilty of committing child sexual abuse should be in the ninth circle of Hell, along with those committing treachery because what is child sexual abuse if not treachery! It is treacherous against the innocent children, who fall betrayed by those who they must respect and obey (adults or those older then they), it is an act of treason to the victim who may have trusted the person committing such a heinous act. But after much contemplation, I still cannot agree with this placement. Child sexual abuse and child sexual assault is, in a very real way, equal to those types of betrayals. The innocence of a child makes those crimes so bad that I feel so uncomfortable writing about. As defined on their website, child sexual abuse includes: any sexual act between an adult and a minor, or between two minors, when one exerts power over the other, forcing, coercing or persuading a child to engage in any type of sexual act, non-contact acts such as exhibitionism, exposure to pornography, voyeurism, and communicating in a sexual manner by phone or Internet. In Dante’s world, those guilty of child sexual assault are far more wicked than those guilty of other sexual sins, and even worse than those guilty of aberrant sexual behavior (as it was understood at the time). Therefore, these sinners would have their very own special place below the ninth circle.

Unfortunately, this is a widespread problem known as scope creep during an IS development. Scope creep is an unexpected demand that moves a project past its predetermined limits. Projects are always documented with a planning outline, which covers in-depth details on boundaries, schedules, major deliverables, time, and budget. Unfortunately, individuals involved in the project may intentionally or unintentionally cause a project to not meet its goals due to the unpredictable nature of adding tasks to a project in progress. Project managers can ensure that the scope is clear by referring to the project planning outline, where all the boundaries and parameters of the project stipulate all deliverables. Spending extra time finalizing the plan can dial in a clear and detailed scope for everyone involved in the project. A project manager needs to engage directly with the clients by speaking with them and thoroughly walking them through all the parameters and deliverables. Closely collaborating with clients throughout the various stages of the project can prevent hiccups that may occur. If issues arise during project development, it is always best to be transparent with the client about every problem. Being able to work through solutions with clients will ease the anxieties as strategies are planned. To ensure deliverables are to the client's expectations, necessary features should be identified as critical for delivering a usable end product. For example, managing a scope creep can be difficult if not handled correctly. However, managing change in a project development does not have to be a battle of wills. Knowing how to address change can be beneficial. It can be outlined in the project planning document with parameters that will deliver the best product for the client without derailing the project. (ELI)At the time when I first had to take a sociology class in high school, I was staunchly anti-feminism, as I felt it was unnecessary in first world countries and primarily focused on encouraging immodesty and considering women to be worth more than men. At that time, my only education on feminism or feminist issues had come from my parents during homeschooling. I clearly remember getting into a heated debate with a classmate whom I considered "the feminist equivalent of a vegan," (referring to the stereotypical joke, "How do you know if someone is a vegan? Don't worry, they'll tell you,") and I told her I simply could not see any situations in real life where women aren't being represented without a real reason. She introduced me to the term Bechdel Test, and encouraged me to spend a few weeks watching my usual shows, but counting how many times the female characters spoke to each other about anything other than men.
As my understanding of feminism and of the world around me has evolved, I have seen an increase in media that passes the Bechdel Test, but have also been surprised to find it is significantly less common than I expected. Additionally, the Bechdel Test only looks at named female characters who discuss something other than men. It does not look at factors of race, sexuality, topics of conversation, or visual presentation. Some argue that although media increasingly passes the test, the quality of that media is lacking and therefore the value of the Bechdel Test does not hold up (How does the Bechdel Test measure up in evaluating film representations of women, 2021). More detailed studies show that women remain underrepresented in media, both behind and before the camera (Smith et. al, 2016). The female characters that are portrayed in trend towards being young and traditionally attractive, reinforcing the "ideal" image as the standard and further raising the standard for the average woman. Additionally, women of color and women belonging to other racial or social minority groups are even less visible, impacting the expectations that society has of women based on how they are shown, and influencing what women consider "normal" in themselves.

MedStar Health Inc, a leader in the healthcare industry regionally and nation-wide, is a constant target of the malicious attempts of cyber criminals. Over the past 6 years MedStar Health Inc. has faced several instances of data breach most notably, the 2016 breach that compromised 370 computer systems and halted its operations. As the organization continues to digitize and broaden the use of electronic medical records across its facilities, the threat of cyber-attack remains even more pervasive. The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of MedStar Health Inc cybersecurity vulnerabilities, examine the overall causes and impact of the breaches and explore solutions to meet the organization’s cybersecurity challenges.
With a focal point on MedStar Health breaches, a literature-based study was conducted, and various news articles, academic journals and company publications were analyzed. It was found that the 2016 and 2020 data breaches were attacks on the organization’s internet servers. The 2020 hack compromised the records of 668 patients, whereas the 2016 hack was a result of a ransomware infection that compromised 7500 individuals’ records and halted the organizations’ operations. The cost of the virus infection was greater than the $19,000 ransom requested due to additional recovery and remediation costs. It was also revealed that the 2019 breach was due to human error.
To best combat the efforts of cyber criminals, it is recommended that MedStar Health Inc. place greater emphasis on cyber awareness training for employees/professionals, implementing multiple factor authentications and a strong password and identity management system to reinforce its IT infrastructure against future hacks. Failure to effectuate these measures pose significant risk to MedStar Health Inc., its affiliates and patients that extend beyond ransom payments, fines, imprisonment, lawsuits and costs incurred for subsequent identity theft protection services. The damage caused by data security breaches may prove fatal for patients, the company’s most valued asset, compromising public perception and the company’s mission to provide the highest quality of medical care and build long-term relationships with the patients they serve.)

Before describing the analog transmission of digital data there are a few terms that we should be familiar with, modem, encoding and carrier wave. A modem is modulator, demodulator device that converts digital to analog and analog to digital. Encoding is the conversion of data to a format required and in this case the conversion of digital data to analog data. Carrier wave is a basic wave of constant frequency transmitted through a circuit.
To transmit digital data in an analog format first you must be connected to a modem which encodes the data and converts the digital data into analog data. It does this by populating the analog signal with a carrier wave and modulating the characteristics of the carrier wave which allows for the analog data to be encoded to digital data and digital data to be decoded to analog.
Digital Transmission of Analog Data
An example of the digital transmission of analog data would be Voice over IP (VOIP) or a more modern and relatable example would be a Zoom meeting. This is done through a couple different technologies a Codec and Pulse-code modulation (PCM). Codec stands for Code, Decode and it is a device or software that converts analog signal into digital form and vice versa. PCM on the other hand converts analog to digital by sampling the analog signal at regular intervals, measuring the amplitude of each sample, and then encoding or quantizing the amplitude as binary data. Through this sampling analog data such as your voice is encoded into digital data via the technologies previously mentioned.

T HE Odyssey is principally the story of a return. A man has
spent
ten years fighting a war in a distant country and another ten
years
trying, against all sorts of obstacles and distractions, to get
home to his
wife and family. Will he make it?
The imaginary listener sitting by the fireside when the Odyssey
was
first recited, and the countless readers of the poem who have
followed
after, knew that he would make it; Odysseus would get home.
They
knew it and we know it not only through a familiarity with the
myth
(which can be assumed even for Homer's first audience) but
also be-
cause we are told, in the very opening of the first book, that the
gods are
on the side of Odysseus. Athena receives verbal assurance from
Zeus
that Odysseus will return. It is only a matter of time.
We may know that Odysseus will return, but Odysseus and the
other
characters in the story certainly do not. And, as in most good
stories, we
3. find ourselves standing beside the characters; we are involved
in the
action with them and we see it unfolding from their point of
view. As it
unfolds, they (and we) are given certain assurances, pledges of
Olympian
concern in the story, indications that the gods are behi nd the
action and
that all will turn out well in the end. To give these pledges
their most
general term, they are omens or portents. These omens are in
one sense
more significant for us, the readers, who know the divine plan
for
Odysseus' return, than they are for the characters, who have to
take
them as signs of hope for the future. But we are asked to
suspend our
superior knowledge in the press of the action, so that for us,
too, these
occurrences are truly ominous, pointing to the future, but
shrouded in
mystery and with their full significance hidden from view.
In the recent paperback reissue of his translation of the
Odyssey,
Robert Fitzgerald has discussed certain bird omens.' It is my
purpose
here to delve further into the matter, and try to show that there
is a whole
complex of ominous occurrences, which seems to be due to the
conscious
artistry of the poet, who thus provides his story with an
underlying
principle of unity.
4. To begin with the bird-omens. The first occurs during the
assembly
on Ithaca in Book ii when Telemachus denounces the suitors
and

refuses Antinous' demands to make his mother remarry. A pair
of eagles
glide down from a mountain, swoop over the crowd, flap their
wings
and glare death. Finally they 'tear cheeks and necks with their
talons' and
dart away to the right. It is not clear from ii. 153 whose necks
and
cheeks the eagles tear with their talons. The usual
interpretation is 'tear
one another's cheeks', but Fitzgerald objects that to have the
eagles tear
each other's necks and cheeks is pointless; it really ought to be
the necks
and cheeks of the suitors. Admittedly this makes the omen
more pointed
and threatening, but perhaps absolute literalness is not to be
looked for
in this sort of omen. And there is a stronger objection to
Fitzgerald's
5. theory: for the suitors to have their necks and cheeks torn
would be a
horrible thing, and yet we are told of no attempt to beat off the
eagles,
while the suitors' reaction is simply 068p3racrv 8' 6pvlcxas
(I55)-'they
wondered at the birds', which is rather too weak if they had
been their
victims, as Fitzgerald believes. Another eagle-omen occurs in
Book xv,
as Telemachus is about to set out from Sparta to return home.
An eagle
on the right (SEt?b 6prviS, c lETOS, xv. 16o-i) flies by,
clutching a
farmyard goose in its claws; the eagle then flies off to the
right; the
favourable aspect of the omen is, as it were, doubled. Nestor's
son
Peisistratus, who has accompanied Telemachus from Pylos,
asks
Menelaus to interpret the omen, but before he can begin, Helen
intrudes
(a clever touch, quite in keeping with her management of
affairs in Book
iv): 'Hear me. I shall prophesy to you. Just as the eagle came
from the
mountain and snatched up and tore the goose bred in the house,
so will
Odysseus return home from his sufferings and wanderings and
take
vengeance.' Then she adds significantly, 'or he is already home,
sowing
destruction for all the suitors' (172-8). 'May Zeus bring this
about',
6. Telemachus replies, 'and we shall pray to you as to a god'; and
on this
hopeful note he heads for the coast.
As Telemachus is about to board ship he is accosted by
Theocly-
menus, a strange character, but also an important one, to whom
we shall
have to return. When they arrive in Ithaca and Telemachus is
telling
his passenger to go off to Eurymachus' house, another bird of
good omen
appears, a dexios ornis, this time a 'hawk, swift messenger of
Apollo,
holding and plucking a dove in its claws, and its feathers
poured down to
the earth . .. ' (xv. 525-7). Theoclymenus proceeds to interpret
the
sign: 'not without God did the dexios ornis fly up. I knew when
I saw it
that it was an ominous bird', oicov6g, not merely ornis. We
know what
the omen portends, and we expect Theoclymenus to mention
Odysseus'
return, but he shies away from it and his prophecy trickles off
somewhat
vaguely: 'there is no family more kingly than yours in Ithaca,
but you are

7. lords forever' (531-4). Theoclymenus completes his
interpretation of
the omen in Book xvii, when he tells Penelope that ' . . .
Odysseus is
already in his native land . .. sowing evil for the suitors; s uch
was the
bird of omen I observed and told to Telemachus' (xvii. 157-61).
We
should note that there is some confusion here: Theoclymenus'
earlier
interpretation was quite vague; it was Helen who had
interpreted the
bird-omen at Sparta as signifying that Odysseus might be
'already at
home, sowing evil for the suitors' (xv. 178 almost = xvii. 159).
A final
bird-omen occurs after the suitors' attempted ambush of
Telemachus on
his way back from Sparta has failed through Athena's devising
and they
are plotting to kill him in Ithaca. As they are in conference, 'an
eagle
came from the left with a trembling dove in its claws' (xx. 242-
3). The
omen is not interpreted, although its meaning should be clear to
us, but
it leads Amphinomus to propose that they abandon their plan
and re-
turn to their feasting.
This, then, is one clear class of ominous foreshadowing: the
flight of
birds, more often than not eagles, and nearly always on the
right. Re-
lated to these bird-omens are similes in which birds figure.
8. When
Odysseus reveals himself to his son in Book xvi, the two
embrace and
weep, 'more shrilly and vehemently', the poet says, in a skilful
echo of
the earlier bird-omens, 'than birds, sea-eagles or vultures'
whose young
have been stolen from their nests (216-19). At the end of the
slaughter in
Book xxii, the surviving suitors stampede through the hall
pursued by
Odysseus and his men who are likened to ciyvurroi swooping
down from
the mountains, pouncing on smaller birds who head for the
clouds in
panic (302-6). What kind of bird the poet intended is disputed.
Although the term seems to be connected with yvUy, 'vulture',
Stanford'
holds out for 'eagles' here and at xvii. 217. Fitzgerald interprets
it as
'falcons' on the ground that a vulture 'is a carrion bird rather
than a
hunting bird'.z But there is nothing really wrong with 'vulture'
here;
the poet is simply emphasizing the panic of the suitors and the
speed
with which Odysseus pursues them, not making a moral
observation on
Odysseus and his men. At the end of the book, Telemachus and
his
helpers wreak vengeance on the unfaithful serving-women who
are
pictured hanging, their heads all in a row like thrushes or doves
caught
in a net (xxii. 468 ff.). The poet adds a touch of grisly humour:
9. the
maids' feet twitched, he says, for a little while, but not for
long.
Bird-omens branch off in one direction to similes, and also in
another,
one whose importance has not been sufficiently noticed. Athena
appears

to Telemachus in Book i in the guise of Mentes, leader of the
Taphians,
who are pirates. She gets the action started by urging him to go
off in
search of his father, and when the interview is ended, she 'flies
upward,
like a bird' (i. 320). Telemachus, we are told, 'was amazed at
heart, for
he deemed her to be a god' (322-3). Athena herself
accompanies him to
Pylos, but this time in the guise of Mentor, an Ithacan. 'Mentor'
re-
fuses Nestor's offer of a bed and says he will sleep in the s hip
before
setting off in the morning. Then, quite without warning, the
10. poet tells
us that 'grey-eyed Athena departed in the likeness of a sea-
eagle' (iii.
372). Stanford believes that this is 'an actual metamorphosis,
not a
simile' as in Book i, but whether or not there is any significant
difference
between the two occurrences, these flying departures are
clearly porten-
tous events, and I suggest that they are to be understood as a
sub-class of
omen; at least their effect on the spectators is the same.
'Amazement
seized all the onlookers', the poet says. 'Nestor clasped
Telemachus'
hand and said: "The gods must be your escorts.... This is none
other
than Zeus' daughter, glorious Tritogeneia [Athena]"' (iii. 372-
8).
There is yet another bird-transformation, in Book xxii. In the
course of
his struggle against the suitors, Athena comes to Odysseus once
more in
the guise of Mentor, and although Odysseus addressed her as
Mentor,
'he had a foreboding that it was Athena' (xxii. 2Io). After
speaking
words of encouragement, she 'flew up through the smoky hall
to the roof-
beam in the shape of a swallow' (239-40). First 'like a bird',
then in
the shape of a sea-eagle, and finally a swallow: the poet is
careful to
achieve variety. Before leaving the subject, we might say that
all of
Athena's epiphanies in human shape-not only as Mentes or

but also as a child with a water-jug directing Odysseus to the
city of the
Phaeacians, as a Phaeacian man calling his discus-throw; later
as a shep-
herd-boy, the first person to address him on Ithaca; and in her
more
'usual' shape of a tall and comely woman in the hut of
Eumaeus, where
her presence is sensed by the dogs but she is seen only by
Odysseus-all
these appearances are in a sense ominous, for they are repeated
assur-
ances to the characters (and to us) that Zeus and his daughter
are on the
side of Odysseus.
Bird-flights are not the only kind of ominous event used by the
poet to
point in the direction of Odysseus' return. When Athena in the
guise of
Mentes appears to Telemachus in Book i, she urges him to be
off to see
if he can hear news of his father or 'hear some voice from Zeus'
(282-3).
The word the poet uses, 6cTcra, in later Greek meant 'ominous
sound',
something that could be interpreted as an omen.' We find an

in Book xviii, the boxing-match between Odysseus and 'Irus',
the pub-
lic beggar of Ithaca and general ne'er-do-well. The contest
serves as
a humorous interlude, the calm before the storm, and is an echo
of the
games in which Odysseus participated in Phaeacia. When
Odysseus
gives Irus a trouncing, much to the surprise of the suitors, they
cheer and
call to him, 'may Zeus and the other gods grant you, stranger,
whatever
you most wish for and is dearest to your heart' (xviii. 112-13).
The poet
remarks that 'Odysseus delighted at the word of omen',
KAErS]CyV, which
is immediately confirmed by the law-abiding Amphinomus:
'Hail, old
stranger, may happiness (6A3pos) be yours in future... ' (122-
3). We have
here an extension of the chance remark which has a hidden,
ominous sig-
nificance: a prayer which we know is bound to be answered. As
the
disguised Odysseus and Eumaeus are on their way to the
palace, they are
accosted by the goatherd Melanthius, who kicks Odysseus. The
faith-
ful Eumaeus prays to the Nymphs: 'Let my master return . . . '
(xvii.
243). In response to a gift of a loaf from Telemachus, Odysseus
13. says,
'may Telemachus be happy (6'Aptos) and achieve all his
desires' (354-5).
When Antinous hits the 'beggar' with a footstool, the latter
curses him:
'May Antinous meet his death before his wedding day!' (476).
Penelope,
too, hearing the lawless act in her room above, curses
Antinous: 'May
Apollo strike you in the same way' (494), and her prayer is
seconded by
the housekeeper Eurynome (496-7). All these prayers have
greater
significance than the persons who utter them realize, for they
point to
their own fulfilment in the return of Odysseus.'
A non-verbal portent occurs in Book xix, when Telemachus and
Odysseus remove the arms from the hall. As they are doing so
Athena
goes before them 'carrying a golden lamp, and she made an
exceedingly
lovely light' (34). 'Walls, pillars, all seem afire,' Telemachus
remarks,
'some god must be here!' Odysseus explains that 'this is the
way of the
gods who rule Olympus'. Later, in the course of their fight with
the
suitors, there occurs what is perhaps the most impressive omen
in
the poem: 'Athena held up her man-destroying aegis high
above, under
the roof, and the suitors' hearts were terrified' (xxii. 297-8).
Any kind of sudden or unexpected natural occurrence could be
inter-
14. preted as having a divine origin. Thunder, which has something
'Olym-
pian' about it even for us, was invariably considered ominous.
At the
very end of Book xxi, after the suitors have tried one after
another to
string the bow to no avail, Telemachus overrules their
objections and
hands it to the beggar. He strings it utterly without effort, and
just then

'Zeus thundered greatly, making manifest his signs (ai'pcra).
And
Odysseus rejoiced, because Zeus had sent a portent' (xxi. 413-
15).
Sometimes the context is more light-hearted. In Book xvii,
Penelope
prays, 'if only Odysseus would come home, he would take
vengeance on
the suitors', and just as she is uttering these words, Telemachus
sneezes
loudly.' Penelope laughs and says, 'my son has sneezed at my
words;
15. then let death come on the suitors and let none escape' (xvii.
545-7)-
In close connexion with the omen, we find another technique of
divine
foreshadowing, a more full-bodied one, the prophecy.2 The
prophecy-
motif is begun by Athena herself in the first book, but by
indirection.
For when she appears to Telemachus as Mentes, she tells him,
'I shall
prophesy to you although I am no prophet (pydvrts) and have
no clear
knowledge of bird-lore' (200-2). Athena is being slightly
mischievous
here: bird-signs are, as we have seen, an important method of
revealing
the gods' plan for Odysseus, her plan, but she, being a goddess,
does not
need to read omens; she can afford to make light of them in her
human
disguise and utter a direct prophecy. Later in the book
Telemachus is
replying to Eurymachus about the identity of the stranger
(Mentes), and
the lad has some words about the vanity of prophecy. 'There is
no
chance of my father's return. I believe no report, nor pay
attention to
any prophecy if my mother questions some seer in the house'
(414-16).
These words strike us as strange coming as they do so soon
after
Athena's 'prophecy'. Either Telemachus is speaking very
shrewdly and
trying to throw the suitors off their guard (and he has been

TrETrVULAEVOS, 412), or, what seems likelier, he is
speaking from the depths
of despair; after so many years, moments of hope like that
offered by the
pseudo-Mentes are rare and quickly give way to a habitual
discourage-
ment. The lines are also interesting for their implication that
Penelope
has been consulting soothsayers, asking them about the
possibility of
Odysseus' return.
Frequently, prophecies occur in connexion with omens. Thus
the
eagle-omen in Book ii is interpreted by Halitherses, son of
Mastor, who
'surpassed his contemporaries in knowledge of birds'. 'Great
woe is
rolling on the suitors', he warns; 'Odysseus will not long be
absent, but
is already near and is sowing death for these. ... Not as one
inex-
perienced do I prophesy, but with full knowledge.' Then he
continues
rather oddly: 'I say to that man [presumably Odysseus] that all
things

are fulfilled, as I told him, when the Argives went to Ilium. I
said he
would suffer many woes, would lose his comrades, would come
home un-
known in the twentieth year. Now all this is being fulfilled.' It
is a
solemn pronouncement, this speech of Halitherses occasioned
by the
omen, made more so by its length (161-76). It takes us back in
time to
before the expedition sailed for Troy: the will of the gods had
been
manifested in prophecy even then. No prudent man would take
such
a solemn prophetic utterance lightly.
But Eurymachus does. 'Go home and prophesy to your
children', he
begins. 'I am better at prophecy than you', he says mockingly;
'there
are many birds under the sun, but not all are ominous
(`vaicrmpoi).'
Eurymachus sarcastically echoes the prophet's words when he
says that
his threat will be fulfilled (187), just as Halitherses had said
that his
prophecies would be fulfilled. And towards the end of his
18. angry denun-
ciation, Eurymachus echoes Telemachus' words in the first
book: 'we
pay no heed to prophecy. . . ' (ii. 20I'-i. 415). The picture of
the arro-
gant and overbearing suitors is reinforced by this scene which
shows
them to be utterly godless, recking not of the signs of heaven in
their
blind folly. They even had in their company a professional
soothsayer
(OUOcrK6OS), one Leiodes, who disapproved of their
behaviour but could
do nothing to stop it. Perhaps he did not realize the full
implications of
his own words when he warned his companions, after failing to
string the
bow, that 'this bow will deprive many noble men of life and
spirit...
(xxi. 153-4). His words went unheeded, and he himself did not
beg off
the retribution dealt by Odysseus (xxii. 321 ff.).
Prophecies figure in the central portion of the Odyssey as well.
At
Sparta Menelaus tells Telemachus of the prophetic vision
revealed to
him in Egypt by Proteus, the Old Man of the Sea. When finally
pinned
down, he told Menelaus that he saw Odysseus on an island, in
the halls
of the nymph Calypso, who was keeping him from returning
home. This
vision Telemachus recounts to his mother when he returns to
Ithaca
19. (xvii. 140 ff.). Polyphemus, too, had had forewarning of
Odysseus'
arrival. The prophet Telemus son of Eurymus, who 'spent his
life as
a seer and grew old among the Cyclopes' (ix. 5io) had foretold
Poly-
phemus' blinding at the hands of Odysseus. Too late does he
realize
that 'indeed old prophecies have come to pass' (507), the exact
words
used by Alcinous when he realizes that his father's prophecy of
Posei-
don's anger at the Phaeacians for their indiscriminate
transporting of
strangers has been fulfilled in the transformation of their ship
to stone
(xiii. 172 ff.).
Telemachus' strange shipmate on his return from the
Peloponnese,

Theoclymenus, has caused offence to some critics. But he
seems to be
introduced for the very purpose of enhancing the atmosphere of
fore-
boding. When he first accosts Telemachus at the shore, he
identifies
himself as a a&v-rt (xv. 225), a descendant of the prophet
20. Melampus and
related to the famous Amphiaraus. We have already noticed his
double
interpretation of the omen of the hawk tearing the dove which
they en-
counter on their arrival at Ithaca. But Theoclymenus' main
performance
as a mantis is in Book xx. In response to one of the suitor's
demands that
he let his mother remarry, Telemachus replies: 'I'm not
stopping her;
I'll even add a dowry.' At this, Athena sends a fit of
uncontrollable
laughter upon them (345 ff.), and Theoclymenus utters a
prophecy.'
'Your heads and faces and knees are shrouded in night', he
begins.
'Wailing flares up, your cheeks are in tears, the walls and roof-
beams are
dripping with blood. The porch and hall are full of ghosts
hastening to
the gloom of Erebus. Sun has left the heaven, and an evil mist
has come
on' (351-7). 'A very remarkable and macabre scene', as
Stanford re-
marks; a new warning to the doomed suitors and at the same
time a new
and somewhat startling pointer to the resolution of the poem.
The
suitors laugh at Theoclymenus, and Eurymachus says, 'he's lost
his
mind, let's get him out of here', but the prophet retorts, 'I shall
walk out
under my own power, for I perceive the evil that is coming
upon you,
and no one will escape ... ' (367-9). And Theoclymenus'
21. prophecy is
fulfilled, as Stanford notes, in the scene of carnage in Book
xxii when the
slain Antinous' bread and meat are fouled with his own blood
(21), and
later 'a terrible groan arose . . and the whole floor ran with
blood'
(308-9).
But the greatest professional prophet of the Odyssey, perhaps
of all
literature, is, of course, Teiresias. His great prophecy to
Odysseus in the
Underworld in Book xi prepares Odysseus and us for a return to
Ithaca,
and takes us forward, in a mystic vision, to the end of
Odysseus'
journeying. Teiresias tells Odysseus that he and his men will
return only
if they spare the cattle of the Sun; 'otherwise, even if you
escape, you
will return late, after losing all your companions and in
someone else's
ship. And you will find troubles at home . . . ' (xi. 113-15).
Teiresias
then tells of the suitors, their insults and ultimate slaughter,
and ends
with the strange mystic vision of Odysseus' last adventure. He
will
wander far inland, to where men do not know the sea; he will
receive a
sign (o~cfa) that his journey is over when a stranger shall take
the oar he
carries on his shoulder for a winnowing-fan. He is then to
sacrifice to

Poseidon and death will come upon him, an 'easy death from
the sea'
(xi. 134-5).'
In the class of prophecies I would also include certain
utterances
Odysseus makes about his own return while in disguise as a
beggar on
Ithaca; perhaps it is better to call them 'pseudo-prophecies'
since
Odysseus already has returned and is only waiting for an
opportune
moment to reveal himself. In Eumaeus' hut he swears by 'Zeus
and your
friendly table and Odysseus' hearth' that Odysseus will return
(xiv. 158-
9). Later, he uses almost the same words to Penelope to
'predict' his own
imminent return (xix. 303-7), and towards the end of that book,
he en-
courages Penelope to go ahead with her plan for the archery
contest:
'Odysseus will be here before these men string the bow and
23. shoot
through the iron' (582-7). He tries in vain to warn the law-
abiding
Amphinomus: 'Odysseus will not be long absent; he is very
near' (xviii.
145-6), but his warning falls on deaf ears; Amphinomus goes
off with
nodding head and sorrowful heart, 'and his spirit foreboded
evil' (154)-
There is one final technique of divine foreshadowing, most
important
of all, perhaps, because it is more direct than omens or
prophecies: the
heaven-sent dream.2 At the very end of Book iv Penelope has
what
Professor Dodds classifies as an 'objective visionary dream'.3
She prays
to Athena for the safety of Telemachus, who is off to find news
of his
father, and, in answer to her prayer, Athena sends a dream-
image of
Penelope's sister, Iphitime (wife of Eumelus of Pherae,
Alcestis' son).
At first, Penelope does not recognize the dream for what it is;
she won-
ders why her sister has not come before. She confides in her
that she is
more worried about Telemachus than about Odysseus, for
whom, she
implies, she has just about given up hope. The image assures
Penelope
that Athena is Telemachus' escort and that it is the goddess, in
fact, who
has sent her, the image, to Penelope. This last comment is what
24. gives
the truth away; wise Penelope says: 'if you are a god or have
heard a
god's voice, tell me about Odysseus, is he alive or dead?' We
are on the
verge of a revelation-but it is too soon; Penelope must be kept
in the
dark longer than the others to make the climax of Odysseus'
own
' Part of Teiresias' prophecy is repeated by Circe in Book xii,
the lines concerning
Odysseus' return (xii. 137-41 = xi. 11o-14). The repetition has
offended hypercritics,
but it is quite natural, coming as it does at the end of Circe's
prophecy of Odysseus'
immediate future, the Sirens, Drifting Rocks, Scylla and
Charybdis, the cattle of Helios.
These immediate adventures play no part in Teiresias'
prophecy; he is more concerned
with the ultimate, the mysterious, the cosmic.

revelation of himself more dramatic. 'No,' the dream replies, 'of
him I
shall not tell at length, whether he is alive or dead. It is evil to
speak
words light as wind.' (iv. 836-7). The image glides away
through the
keyhole (for, as Professor Dodds remarks, 'Homeric bedrooms
have
neither window nor chimney"), but Penelope's 'heart was
warmed since
a clear dream had rushed upon her in the darkness of night'
(840-I).
There are several minor examples of prophetic dream-Athena,
for
example, appears to Nausicaa in Book vi in a dream, disguised
as one of
her friends, and Odysseus in a yarn he spins for Eumaeus refers
to a
OEioS O VEpoS (xiv. 495)-but one of primary importance
occurs in Book
xix, when Penelope interrogates the stranger who is really her
husband
and asks him to interpret a dream she had. Twenty geese of the
house
are seen eating wheat, when suddenly a great eagle swoops
down from
a mountain and breaks their necks and kills them. They are
poured in
a heap in the halls; the eagle flies up to the bright air. Penelope
says she
had delighted to see the feeding geese, and bitterly lamented
their deaths,
when the eagle returned and sat on a roof-beam and addressed
26. her in
human voice: 'It was not a dream, but a good waking vision,
which will
be brought to fulfilment for you. The geese are the wooers, but
I, who
came before as the eagle, have now come back again, your
husband, who
will send unseemly doom on all the suitors' (xix. 535-50). The
account
is extremely interesting, not only for its elaborate and vivid
detail, but
also as combining the bird-of-omen motif, which, as Fitzgerald
well says,
here 'comes to a kind of flowering',2 with that of the dream.
Until now,
dreams and omens have been used as two separate techniques
of divine
foreshadowing. Here the dream is itself the vehicle for the
omen, which
hardly needs interpreting. The stranger makes the obvious
comment:
'Odysseus himself has told you how it will turn out; it is
impossible to
interpret it differently' (555-7). But Penelope, too, like
Telemachus,
has been waiting a long time, and she replies dispiritedly that
dreams are
hard to interpret; she thinks her dream has come from the gate
of ivory,
and is therefore deceptive, not from the gate of horn. She then
voices her
intention to set up twelve axeheads and hold an archery
contest; she will
go as a prize to the winner, leaving her house which she will
remember
'even if only in dreams' (58i). 'Hold the contest', the beggar
27. says omi-
nously; 'Odysseus will be here!'
We are now on the threshold of the decisive encounter, the eve
of
battle, when Odysseus must confront the suitors and test his
wits and
strength against theirs. It is not surprising that the poet should
increase
the tension and strain the expectancy of his audience by using
almost all

the techniques of foreshadowing which we have been
considering. We
find Odysseus at the beginning of Book xx lying sleepless,
wondering
how to handle the suitors, when Athena comes to him again, in
her
'usual' guise, a beautiful woman. She stands above his head-and
the
line is exactly that used of Penelope's dream in Book iv (xx. 32
= iv.
803)-and tries to quiet his anxieties by assuring him yet again
of her
assistance.' Penelope, too, lies sleepless on this decisive night;
she prays
28. to Artemis for death and ends her prayer by complaining that
'some god
sends upon me evil dreams'. She reports that on this very night
a dream
slept beside her in the appearance of Odysseus, 'and my heart
was glad,
for I deemed it was no dream, but the very truth at last' (89-90,
trans.
Murray). The psychologists might call this mere 'wish
fulfilment', but
the poet intends it as a prophetic foreshadowing of what is at
hand.
Penelope weeps, and the sound of her weeping reaches
Odysseus, who
'pondered, and it seemed to him in spirit that she already knew
him and
was standing over his head' (93-94). Altogether we have here a
re-
markable constellation of dreams and dream-images: the poet
takes us
into the very hearts of the two main participants in the drama
to reveal
their deepest hopes on this fateful eve.
Odysseus arises and prays to Zeus: 'If I have come home by
your will,
let someone of those waking up utter an ominous word within,
or let
some other portent (Trpas) of Zeus be manifested outside' (98-
o10).
Odysseus' prayer is answered in both particulars: first, thunder
from a
clear sky, then the utterance of the last of Odysseus' twelve
maids at the
grinding-mill-as a 'sign (oacpa) to her master' (iI I)-'Zeus, lord,

thunder from the starry sky, a sign to someone. Let this be the
last meal
for the suitors, who have kept me grinding at the mills!' (112-
19). Odys-
seus rejoices at this ominous word (KkErlGc'v) and the
thunder, and
'thinks he will punish the suitors'. And he does.
It should be noted that several of the techniques of
foreshadowing are
echoed in Book xxiv, which has been suspected of being post-
Homeric.
We have a final bird-portent in the tale which Odysseus
somewhat per-
versely spins for his father Laertes. Five years before, he tells
him,
Odysseus had been at his home in Alybas, and, as he w as
leaving, 'there
were birds of good omen, on the right . . . ' (310-11). Odysseus
finally
reveals himself and when Laertes, too, asks for a afipa,
Odysseus men-
tions his scar and the trees in Laertes' orchard which he had
given to
Odysseus as a boy. The angry relatives of the dead suitors
gather to seek
Athena has quite a time convincing Odysseus. To his queries
and complaints she
retorts angrily, 'Stubborn! I am a god: we could match fifty
troops of men' (45-5~)-
We see Odysseus here for the first time voicing the kind of
sceptical doubts that Tele-
machus and Penelope had raised earlier.

redress. Two men try unsuccessfully to quiet them, Medon the
herald
and Halitherses the seer, who 'alone saw before and after'
(xxiv. 452),
the very man who had foretold woe for the suitors and the
imminent re-
turn of Odysseus in Book ii. The suitors got what was coming
to them,
he now tells their kinsmen, and the latter are themselves to
blame for not
trying to stop them while there was still time. The relatives
will have
none of it, but march on Laertes' hut. The two sides are at
spears'
points, with Athena on Odysseus' side in the form, again, of
Mentor.
When Laertes spears Eupheithes, Antinous' father, bloodshed is
about
to begin anew, but Athena shouts aloud that they should stop
fighting
and make peace bloodlessly. At this last and direct i ntervention
of the
goddess in the action, pale fear seizes the townspeople, who
drop their
swords and head for home. Odysseus prepares to pursue them,
and
'gathering himself up he swooped after them like a high-flying
31. eagle'
(538)-an appropriate rounding-off of the bird imagery-but is
deterred
by a final omen from Zeus, a thunderbolt which he drops
smouldering at
Athena's feet. She makes a peace-treaty with both sides, still
with the
form and voice of Mentor.
I have argued that hope is kept alive in the characters by a
series of
portentous events: bird omens in which Odysseus' return and
revenge
are prefigured by a larger bird (generally an eagle) slaughtering
smaller
ones; Athena's varied bird-transformations; miscellaneous
omens among
which chance utterances figure prominently; prophecies in the
narrower
sense by professional soothsayers; and prophetic dreams. On
one level,
they provide assurances of divine involvement in Odysseus'
return, but
I wonder whether we may not take the argument a step further.
Can we
not see these divine foreshadowings as falling into a pattern?
And does
this not seem to be a conscious technique for achieving unity in
a very
long and digression-prone work? And (one final question), in
that case,
would it be too far-fetched to postulate, behind the unifying
pattern, the
organizing hand of a single poet?

that goes back to Homer’s Iliad, and continues well past Virgil.
In general,
the first similes in epic are programmatic for the cosmos of the
whole poem,
for they present an icon of the relationship between human
beings and the
natural world, which in turn gives us an icon of the poem’s
relationship
between order and disorder, chaos and harmony. These icons are
an ideal,

like all icons, and there are many ways in which these first
programmatic mo-
ments turn out to have a degree of slippage and lack of fit, as is
characteristic
of similes in general.2 A study of the first similes in an epic can
shed light on
a range of narrative techniques and thematic concerns that carry
through
the poem as a whole.
We begin with the first first similes in epic, in Homer’s Iliad.
The very first
similes in the Iliad are not developed, although they generate
considerable
condensed power. As Apollo comes down Mt. Ida in response to
the prayers of
his priest, Chryses, in order to shoot his arrows at the Achaean
host, “he went
like night” (ὁ δ’ ἤϊε νυκτὶ ἐοικώς, Il. 1.47): since he has been
called Φοῖβος,
“bright/radiant,” only four lines before, the oxymoronic power
of the com-
parison to night is chilling.3 A second undeveloped simile soon
follows, in the
description of Agamemnon’s anger at the speech of Calchas,
when “his eyes
were like shining fire” (ὄσσε δέ οἱ πυρὶ λαμπετόωντι ἐΐκτην, Il.
1.104); and
a third is used to describe Thetis emerging “quickly from the
grey sea like a
mist” (καρπαλίμως δ’ ἀνέδυ πολιῆς ἁλὸς ἠΰτ’ ὀμίχλη, Il. 1.359).
36. It is only in the second book, with the poem’s fourth simile, that
we meet a
developed simile of the classic type, the first one in the poem,
as the movement
of the Achaeans to Agamemnon’s assembly is compared to the
movement of
bees going out to gather nectar (Il. 2.87–93):
ἠΰτε ἔθνεα εἶσι μελισσάων ἁδινάων,
πέτρης ἐκ γλαφυρῆς αἰεὶ νέον ἐρχομενάων·
βοτρυδὸν δὲ πέτονται ἐπ’ ἄνθεσιν εἰαρινοῖσιν·
αἱ μέν τ’ ἔνθα ἅλις πεποτήαται, αἱ δέ τε ἔνθα· 90
ὣς τῶν ἔθνεα πολλὰ νεῶν ἄπο καὶ κλισιάων
ἠϊόνος προπάροιθε βαθείης ἐστιχόωντο
ἰλαδὸν εἰς ἀγορήν·
As the tribes of dense-flying bees go from a hollow rock,
constantly coming
on a-fresh; they fly in clusters on the spring flowers; some fly
in throngs this
way, some that; so the many tribes of the Achaeans from the
ships and huts, in
front of the deep beach, filed in companies to the assembly.
There are many lines of approach into this rich simile, but for
the purposes
of the present argument we shall concentrate on how the simile
may be read

as an emblem of social cohesion.4 Homer creates a meticulous
parallelism
between the organization of the bees and of the Achaeans. The
simile con-
centrates on the group organization of the bees, as the context
concentrates
on the organized subgroups which make up the larger mass of
the Achaeans.
The bees are grouped in ἔθνεα, “tribes” (87), as are the
Achaeans themselves
(91); they fly βοτρυδόν, “in clusters” (89), and ἅλις, “in
throngs” (90), while
the Achaeans move in στίχοι, “files” (ἐστιχόωντο, 92) and ἶλαι,
“companies”
(ἰλαδόν, 93).5 Now, the action of the simile may appear to be
saying the op-
posite of the context, in that the bees are leaving a central point
and going
in diverse directions, while the Achaeans are coming from
diverse directions
to a central point. In fact, the two actions of simile and context
supplement
each other to achieve a harmonious reciprocity, which
reinforces in narrative
terms the thematic import of the comparison. The bees and the
Achaeans are
subgroups making up a larger unity as they jointly create a
cyclical pattern of
leaving the central point and then returning: the narrative shows
the Achaeans
gathering to a central point, and the simile shows them
dispersing from it.
38. Bees to the ancients were the archetypal social animal, and
comparisons
between human and bee society were frequently made. Hesiod
makes em-
blematic use of the social paradigm of the bee in the single
simile in the Works
and Days, which compares the lazy man to a drone, sitting at
home and doing
no work (303–6); in the Theogony, there are only three similes,
one of which
also has a comparison to drones, this time of the woman (594–
601).6 The
ancient world’s most striking development of the bee/human
analogy is in
Virgil’s Fourth Georgic, which draws on long-standing poetic,
philosophical
and scientific traditions.7 The honeybees have remained a
multivalent and

coincidence that the great
battles of the Theogony generate quasi-epic moments of simile
or analogy: compare the
density of similes in the section of the Hesiodic Aspis that
contains the set-piece combat
between Heracles and Cycnus (Hunter 2006: 87, referring to
374–79, 386–92, 402–12,
421–23, 426–32, 436–40). Otherwise, in the Theogony there is
only one half-line simile
(Phaethon is “a man like the gods,” θεοῖς ἐπιείκελον ἄνδρα,
987).

keenly contested emblem of human society ever since, and I
recommend the
engaging work of Wilson 2004 as a fine introduction to the long
history of the
bees as a microcosm of human society. To her survey of
subsequent literary
expressions of the image, including especially the Archbishop
of Canterbury’s
speech in Shakespeare’s Henry V (I.ii.192–208), I would add
only two per-
sonal favorites: the satirizing of the whole conceit of the
comparison by the
work-shy lawyer Eugene Wrayburn in Charles Dickens’s Our
Mutual Friend
40. (1864–65: Book 1, Chapter 8), together with Tolstoy’s three-
page comparison
of the abandoned city of Moscow to a queenless hive in War and
Peace (1869:
Volume 3, Chapter 20). The political force of the analogy is
still alive, to judge
by the fascinating study of the entomologist T. D. Seeley.
Entitled Honeybee
Democracy, his book explains for the first time the precise
means by which
swarming honeybees reach a “decision” about where to find a
new site for a
hive, and draws explicit lessons from their behavior for how
human beings
should reach decisions at all levels of society.
The comment of the ancient scholiasts on our first simile
certainly shows
a high degree of interest in the social force of the comparison
(AbT 2.87):
ἔθνεα· πρὸς τοὺς εἰκαζομένους Ἕλληνας, ἐπεὶ σμήνεα ἔδει.
πρώτη δὲ αὕτη
παραβολὴ τῷ ποιητῇ. συγγενὲς δὲ ποιητικῇ τὸ ζῷον διὰ τὸν
μόχθον καὶ τὸ
γλυκὺ καὶ τὴν σύνθεσιν τοῦ κηρίου. ἡ μὲν οὖν φαλαγγηδὸν
γινομένη πρόοδος
εὖ ἔχει· ὡπλισμέναι τε κέντροις εἰσίν, ὑπήκοοι τε καὶ αὐταί εἰσι
καὶ ἐπ’ ἔργον
ἐξίασιν, οὐχ ὡς αἱ γέρανοι, φιλάλληλοι τέ εἰσι μεταβαίνουσαί τε
πολλὰς ἀρχὰς
πτήσεως ποιοῦνται.
Tribes: with regard to the Greeks who are the object of
comparison, since it
should have been “swarms.” This is the poet’s first simile. The
41. creature is at home
in poetry through hard work, sweetness and the construction of
honeycomb.
The way the procession happens in phalanxes is good: for they
are armed with
stings, they are subjects too [like the Achaeans] and they go out
to work, not
like the cranes (cf. 3.3–7), they are fond of one another and as
they change
course they make many starts to their flight.
The scholiast picks up on the way that Homer has accentuated
the identifica-
tion of the tenor and the vehicle by describing the bees with the
word ἔθνεα,
“tribes,” since this is a human word, not a bee one.8 After
noting that the
simile is the first one in the poem and then throwing in some
more or less

random possible connections between bees and poetry, he
homes in on the
social organization aspect of the comparison, finding numerous
points of
contact between the behavior of the bees and the Achaeans. He
42. also makes
a distinction between the industrious bees to whom the
Achaeans are com-
pared and the feckless cranes who illustrate the behaviour of the
Trojans
and their allies at the beginning of Book 3: the later comment
on the bird
similes concerning the Trojans and their allies disparagingly
claims that “the
similes fill out the gappy/uncoordinated nature of their march”
(τὸ μέντοι
διάκενον τῆς πορείας ἀναπληροῦσιν αἱ παραβολαί, b 3.2). In
fact, in Book 2
the Achaeans are also compared to cranes (and geese and swans,
2.459–65),
but our scholiast glosses over this as part of his usual
philhellene bias, and he
presses on, in that same comment at the beginning of Book 3, to
mark what
he considers the paradigmatic nature of the initial simile applied
to each
side: “Homer fixes the nature of both armies and does not
depart from their
characterization right to the end” (ἀμφοτέρας δὲ τὰς στρατιὰς
διατυποῖ καὶ
μέχρι τέλους οὐκ ἐξίσταται τοῦ ἤθους, b 3.2).
The scholiast, however skewed his perspective, is clearly
responding to
something important in the bee-simile when he focuses on its
program-
matic social significance, and his modern counterparts likewise
remark on
the way that the first simile introduces the concept of the
Achaean host as an
organized and ordered group, setting up a progress that
43. eventually leads in
to the organization of the Catalogue of the Ships some four
hundred lines
later.9 The markedly iconic nature of the bee-simile is even
more apparent on
a rereading of the poem, because it transpires that there is no
other bee-simile
in the Iliad: the initial bee-simile is a programmatic singleton,
presenting an
ideal picture of the Achaeans’ cohesion and order.10 Given that
the massive
and disparate Achaean host gathered at Troy represents a scale
of organiza-
tion completely beyond the actual experience of the poet and his
audience, it
should not surprise us that the poet stamps this remarkable
human gathering
with an iconic simile from the archetypal social unit of the
natural world.
Nonetheless, you have to have one eye shut to read this initial
bee-simile
as an entirely satisfying emblem of cohesion among the
Achaeans, since the
background for the opening assembly is precisely the absence of
Achilles and

the Myrmidons. The latent failure of the idealized simile to
correspond to the
social reality is immediately brought out into the open by the
host’s chaotic
response to Agamemnon’s “test,” in which he tries out their
morale by sug-
gesting that they should all immediately return home, leaving
Troy untaken
(2.139–41). The pattern of confused and potentially catastrophic
action that
follows is punctuated by a linked chain of similes taken from
the natural world
in chaos: eventually, order will be restored, but the ability of
the organism
to preserve its power to function will have been severely
tested.11 This chain
of similes has an immense impact on the later epic tradition,
particularly on
Virgil’s Aeneid, for the similes depict the turbulent movements
of the Achaean
host in terms of the effect of violent storm-winds on the sea.12
As soon as Agamemnon has finished the speech in which he
deceitfully
suggests that they all return home, there is a double simile
comparing the
chaos of the Achaeans’ response to the turmoil caused by the
impact of violent
winds on sea and land (2.144–50):

πόντου Ἰκαρίοιο, τὰ μέν τ’ Εὖρός τε Νότος τε 145
ὤρορ’ ἐπαΐξας πατρὸς Διὸς ἐκ νεφελάων.
ὡς δ’ ὅτε κινήσῃ Ζέφυρος βαθὺ λήϊον ἐλθών,
λάβρος ἐπαιγίζων, ἐπί τ’ ἠμύει ἀσταχύεσσιν,
ὥς τῶν πᾶσ’ ἀγορὴ κινήθη· τοὶ δ’ ἀλαλητῷ
νῆας ἔπ’ ἐσσεύοντο ... 150
The assembly was stirred like the great sea-waves of the Icarian
sea, which the
East wind and the South wind have set in motion, dashing upon
them from
the clouds of father Zeus. And as when the West Wind coming
stirs a deep field
of corn as it rushes on it, blustering, and the field bends to it
with its ears of
corn, so was their whole assembly stirred. They rushed with a
yell to the ships ...
These five lines of comparison remarkably condense three of
the most conspic-
uous “crowd symbols” of Elias Canetti’s list: “The Sea,”
“Corn,” and “Wind.”13
Hera sends Athena to stop the stampede (2.155–65), telling her
to “check each
man with your gentle words” (σοῖς δ’ ἀγανοῖς ἐπέεσσιν ἐρήτυε
φῶτα ἔκαστον,
164); but Athena chooses Odysseus as her surrogate, repeating
to him the

Odysseus takes Agamemnon’s scepter (2.185–86), and he
follows Athena’s
advice for each king or outstanding man he meets (188–89), but
each man
from the people that he sees and finds yelling he hits with the
scepter and
upbraids (198–99), saying (203–5):
οὐ μέν πως πάντες βασιλεύσομεν ἐνθάδ’ Ἀχαιοί·
οὐκ ἀγαθὸν πολυκοιρανίη· εἷς κοίρανος ἔστω,
εἷς βασιλεύς ... 205
In no way will we all be kings here, we Achaeans: it’s not a
good thing to have
lots of leaders; let there be one leader, one king.
Odysseus’s actions and words have their effect, and the
Achaeans immediately
pour back to the assembly with another simile of a great
movement of the
sea, in the fourth developed simile of the poem (2.207–10), a
simile which
47. matches and responds to the simile of wind and sea that marked
their initial
chaotic departure from the assembly at 2.144–4614:
ὣς ὅ γε κοιρανέων δίεπε στρατόν· οἱ δ’ ἀγορήνδε
αὖτις ἐπεσσεύοντο νεῶν ἄπο καὶ κλισιάων
ἠχῇ, ὡς ὅτε κῦμα πολυφλοίσβοιο θαλάσσης

So he, acting as leader, brought the army into order; and they
rushed back again
to the assembly from the ships and huts with a noise, as when a
wave of the
much-resounding sea booms on the long beach, and the sea
roars.
It is striking that Odysseus is acting as the κοίρανος here
(κοιρανέων, 207), just
after he has said that there ought to be only one κοίρανος—by
implication,
Agamemnon. The ideal of single rule that Odysseus espouses is
being subtly
undermined by his own action, yet the ideal is to some extent
recuperated by
the only other use of the verb to describe a human being in the
Iliad, when
it is used of Agamemnon as he inspects the Achaean contingents
(ὣς ὅ γε
κοιρανέων ἐπεπωλεῖτο στίχας ἀνδρῶν, 4.250): it is Odysseus’s
rescuing of the
expedition that will eventually make it possible for Agamemnon
to act as the
κοίρανος whom he failed to embody in Book 2.15

After Odysseus and Agamemnon manage to restore cohesion
and have
the army recommit to the goals of the expedition (2.211–393),
the chain
of nature-similes is rounded off with another image of sea and
wind as the
Achaeans shout their approval of Agamemnon’s call to battle
(2.394–97)16:
ὣς ἔφατ’, Ἀργεῖοι δὲ μέγ’ ἴαχον, ὡς ὅτε κῦμα
ἀκτῇ ἐφ’ ὑψηλῇ, ὅτε κινήσῃ Νότος ἐλθών, 395
προβλῆτι σκοπέλῳ· τὸν δ’ οὔ ποτε κύματα λείπει
παντοίων ἀνέμων, ὅτ’ ἂν ἔνθ’ ἢ ἔνθα γένωνται.
So he spoke, and the Argives gave a great shout, like a wave
upon a high head-
land, when the South wind coming stirs it, upon a projecting
rock: the waves
never leave it alone, of all the winds, whenever they come from
this side or that.
Sound is the ostensible point of comparison here, but we might
49. see a
comparison between the rock and Agamemnon—an image of the
fixity that
Agamemnon wants to have, or that Agamemnon ought to have,
or that the
host wants to see embodied in Agamemnon.17 As we shall see,
that appears
to be how Virgil, at least, read the simile.
Over these three hundred lines in Book 2, we see a large pattern
coming
into view. The idealized and hoped-for social order of the
Achaeans is cap-
tured with the image of the bees; the disruption posed to this
social order of
animal and human is captured with a chain of similes from the
natural world
of chaotic storm and sea; the restoration of order by Odysseus
and, in a very
secondary way, by Agamemnon, is a triumph of kingly oratory
and power, with
the ideal of single rule being held up as the archetype for
cohesion. Certainly,
the restoration of order is an achievement, and the impression of
Achaean
harmony is reinforced by the ordered sequence of the ensuing
Catalogue18;
yet Book 9 will remind us that the social cohesion of the
Achaean host is still
broken, and Book 23 will remind us that it remains fragile even
once Achilles
has been reintegrated into the society of the Achaean host.19

This whole opening template of the Iliad, with its reception in
scholarship
and political philosophy, is going to be of great importance for
the opening
sequence and first simile of Virgil’s Aeneid; likewise crucial
for Virgil will be
the opening sequence and first simile of Lucretius’s De rerum
natura, which
are themselves in dialog with Homer’s patterns. Yet Homer’s
Odyssey is worth
our consideration before we rejoin the mainstream of epic
patterns of order
51. and chaos, since its presentation of the iconic opening moments
of compari-
son is intriguingly different from the Iliad’s portrayal of human
organization
against a backdrop of natural patterns.
Even allowing for the fact that the Odyssey is under four fifths
the length of
the Iliad, it is still striking that the Odyssey has but one third as
many similes
as the Iliad, and that only one third of the Odyssey’s similes are
“developed,” as
compared to some three fifths of the similes in the Iliad.20
There are certainly
any number of memorable developed similes in the Odyssey, but
the differ-
ence between the two poems is tangible, and one aspect of this
difference is
to be seen in the distinctive way in which the later poem sets
out to deploy
the theme of comparison.
There are a number of half-line similes to begin with in the
Odyssey, just
as there are in the Iliad. In response to the kind advice of
Athena, disguised
as Mentes, the fatherless Telemachus says s/he has spoken “like
a father to his
child” (ὥς τε πατὴρ ᾧ παίδ’ Od. 1.308). This apparently almost
throwaway
remark will prove to have great programmatic resonance as the
poem devel-
ops21: addressing the assembly in Ithaca, Telemachus once
more uses a fatherly
analogy, saying that Odysseus was to them “gentle like a father”
52. (πατὴρ δ’ ὣς
ἤπιος ἦεν, 2.47); Mentor shortly thereafter uses the same
language to describe
Odysseus (2.234), as does Athena in the “second” council of the
gods (5.12).22
Next, Telemachus is “like a god to look upon” as he goes to the
Ithacan assembly
which “has been seen by some modern scholars as related to the
famous [contest] for the
armour of Akhilleus at his own funeral games, which led to
Aias’ suicide.”

on, with repeated formulae tracking each other to link together,
above all, the
family of Odysseus. Telemachus is once again compared to the
immortals (ἔκ
53. ῥ’ ἀσαμίνθου βῆ δέμας ἀθανάτοισιν ὁμοῖος, 3.468), as are he
and Pisistratus,
the son of Nestor (γενεῇ δὲ Διὸς μεγάλοιο ἔϊκτον, 4.27), then
Menelaus
(4.306–10 = 2.1–5), Odysseus (θεοῖς ἐναλίγκιον, 19.267; ἔκ ῥ’
ἀσαμίνθου βῆ
δέμας ἀθανάτοισιν ὁμοῖος, 23.163 = 3.468, of Telemachus) and,
climactically,
Laertes, recognized as being θεοῖς ἐναλίγκιον ἄντην by his son
in the poem’s
penultimate simile (24.371 = θεῷ ἐναλίγκιος ἄντην, 2.5
[Telemachus], 4.306
[Menelaus], θεοῖς ἐναλίγκιον, 19.267 [Odysseus]). Even these
brief touches,
then, are marking crucial themes—the paternity of Odysseus
and the links
between the generations of the royal family on Ithaca. But by
the end of Book
3 we have not yet had a simile of more than half a line.
Book 4 is key to the theme of comparison, although we still
have to wait a
considerable time to meet the first developed simile. As
Telemachus and Pisis-
tratus walk through the palace of Menelaus, “there was a
radiance as of the sun
or the moon through the high-roofed house” (ὥς τε γὰρ ἠελίου
αἴγλη πέλεν ἠὲ
σελήνης/δῶμα καθ’ ὑψερεφὲς, 4.45–46); as Helen enters for the
first time, she
is “like Artemis of the golden distaff ” (’Αρτέμιδι χρυσηλακάτῳ
ἐϊκυῖα, 4.122).
It is Helen who introduces the crucial theme of likeness and
comparison in
an extended way with her remarks to Menelaus, when she
hazards a guess as
54. to the identity of the still as yet anonymous guest (4.141–45):
οὐ γάρ πώ τινά φημι ἐοικότα ὧδε ἰδέσθαι
οὔτ’ ἄνδρ’ οὔτε γυναῖκα, σέβας μ’ ἔχει εἰσορόωσαν,
ὡς ὅδ’ ’Οδυσσῆος μεγαλήτορος υἷϊ ἔοικε,
Τηλεμάχῳ, τὸν λεῖπε νέον γεγαῶτ’ ἐνὶ οἴκῳ
κεῖνος ἀνήρ ... 145
for I say that I have not seen anyone with such a resemblance,
neither man nor
woman—wonder holds me as I look at him—as the resemblance
that this man
has to the son of great-hearted Odysseus, Telemachus, whom
that man left, a
newborn, in his house ...
At this point we see in detail the huge investment that this poem
will have in
its own area of comparison—the likeness of inheritance, of
father and son.
Interestingly, Helen does not straightforwardly say, “This young
man re-
sembles Odysseus.” She says, “He resembles the son of
Odysseus”—in other
words, “He looks the way I would imagine, on the basis of my
knowledge
of Odysseus, what his son would look like.” And Menelaus
agrees. He had
already guessed the truth just before Helen entered, when his
expression of

55. loss for his dear friend Odysseus had made the young stranger
weep, holding
up his purple cloak in front of his eyes with both his hands
(4.113–19). Now,
responding to his wife’s prompt, he makes explicit what he had
independently
been thinking (4.148–54):
οὕτω νῦν καὶ ἐγὼ νοέω, γύναι, ὡς σὺ ἐΐσκεις·
κείνου γὰρ τοιοίδε πόδες τοιαίδε τε χεῖρες
ὀφθαλμῶν τε βολαὶ κεφαλή τ’ ἐφύπερθέ τε χαῖται. 150
καὶ νῦν ἦ τοι ἐγὼ μεμνημένος ἀμφ’ ’Οδυσῆϊ
μυθεόμην, ὅσα κεῖνος ὀϊζύσας ἐμόγησεν
ἀμφ’ ἐμοί, αὐτὰρ ὁ πυκνὸν ὑπ’ ὀφρύσι δάκρυον εἶβε,

I too now perceive in the same way as you make the
comparison, wife. For the
feet of that man were like this, and so were his hands, and the
glances of his
eyes and his hair above. And just now, as I was reminiscing
about Odysseus,
I was telling how much that man suffered and toiled on my
account, and he
shed thick tears under his eyebrows, holding up his purple cloak
before his eyes.
The two of them are cooperating here in setting up the
programmatic com-
parison between father and son that is going to be so important
for the rest of
the poem: Menelaus in fact calls attention to her act of
comparison-making
(ὡς σὺ ἐΐσκεις, “as you make the comparison,” 148).23
Telemachus does not just look like his father; he even acts in
56. the way that
Homer will later show his father acting at the court of Alcinous,
for Odys-
seus there likewise draws his cloak over his head to hide his
tears, when he
hears Demodocus sing the tale of the quarrel between Odysseus
and Achilles
(8.83–85).24 When we get to Book 8, it will feel as if Odysseus
is imitating
Telemachus. Actually, in retrospect we are able to see that both
father and
son are acting in the same way at the same moment, for they are
each being
entertained by their gracious hosts, Menelaus and Alcinous, on
the very same

In the Odyssey, then, comparison, likeness and similarity are
going to be
exceptionally important, yet in a way that is distinctively
different from the
strategies of comparison that open the Iliad. These two speeches
of Helen
and Menelaus are, in effect, the programmatic first statement
about similar-
ity in the poem.
Soon after this, Menelaus gives the poem’s first proper
developed simile,
comparing Odysseus to a lion, describing the revenge he will
inflict on the
suitors (Od. 4.335–40):
ὡς δ’ ὁπότ’ ἐν ξυλόχῳ ἔλαφος κρατεροῖο λέοντος 335
νεβροὺς κοιμήσασα νεηγενέας γαλαθηνοὺς
κνημοὺς ἐξερέῃσι καὶ ἄγκεα ποιήεντα

As when a doe beds down her fawns, newborn and still
suckling, in the thicket
of a mighty lion and then goes grazing over the foothills and
grassy glens, and
the lion then comes back to his own lair, and unleashes
unseemly death on both
of them, so Odysseus on them will unleash unseemly death.
58. On the face of it, this is a profoundly misleading glimpse of
what the future
holds, although Menelaus may be attempting to reassure his
young guest.
At the end of this book there is an answering simile,
establishing another
crucial area of likeness for the poem, namely, the comparability
of Odysseus
and Penelope, because Penelope too is compared to a lion—not
a lioness
(Od. 4.791–94):
ὅσσα δὲ μερμήριξε λέων ἀνδρῶν ἐν ὁμίλῳ
δείσας, ὁππότε μιν δόλιον περὶ κύκλον ἄγωσι,
τόσσα μιν ὁρμαίνουσαν ἐπήλυθε νήδυμος ὕπνος·
εὗδε δ’ ἀνακλινθεῖσα, λύθεν δέ οἱ ἅψεα πάντα.

As a lion anxiously thinks in a group of men, in fear, when they
are leading a
circle as a trap around him, so was she deliberating as sweet
sleep came over
her. She lay back in sleep, and all her joints were loosened.
Scholars regularly comment on the incongruity of this likeness
between
Penelope and a lion, yet the link back to Odysseus, 450 lines
earlier, provides
the first example of the poem’s paradoxical linking of the wife
and husband.26
This linking will eventually culminate in the extraordinary
reverse simile that
crowns Penelope’s recognition of Odysseus in Book 23 (233–
39). This simile
describes the relief of a shipwrecked sailor finally reaching
land, and we enter
it under the inevitable impression that the simile refers to
Odysseus, only to
discover when the point of reference is spelled out at the end
that the simile
refers to her (ὣς ἄρα τῇ ἀσπαστὸς ἔην πόσις εἰσοροώσῃ, “so
welcome to her
was the sight of her husband,” 239).27
If the two lion-smiles of Book 4, the first developed similes in
the poem,
ultimately set up this climactic moment of identification in
Book 23, then the
first lion-simile, delivered by Menelaus to Telemachus (4.335–
40), provides
another technique of linking family members through simile.
This first lion-
60. simile is one of only two repeated similes in the Odyssey, and it
is very sig-
nificant that when it is repeated it is in the mouth of
Telemachus, who quotes
to his mother what he had heard from Menelaus (17.126–31).28
Telemachus
shuttles between his mother—the object of a lion-simile
herself—and the
person who had provided a lion-smile for his father.
Cumulatively, these key
similes, by pairing up the various focal members of the family
and by provid-
ing an extended filigree of connection among them throughout
the text, are
a dynamic element of the larger themes of family likeness that
structure the
epic as a whole.29

After the Odyssey’s distinctive commitment to its own brand of
likeness
and similarity, let us return to the mainstream of epic
similitude, to follow
up the Iliad’s deep interest in the paradigms of order and
disorder. Virgil’s
Aeneid is our goal, but before arriving there we must consider
the first simile
of Lucretius’s De rerum natura, which has a great impact on the
subsequent
epic tradition.30
Lucretius’s first simile is part of an extended passage proving
the existence
of the invisible atoms, with his basic point being that we should
not conclude
that atoms do not exist just because we cannot see them (1.265–
70). There are
forces in the world which demonstrably exist even if we cannot
see them, and
62. his example is the wind, which can have a visibly catastrophic
impact despite
being itself invisible. This image of the wind beating the sea
and devastating
the land parallels Homer’s first paired similes of storm on sea
and land in Iliad
2 (144–49), although in Lucretius the material of the Homeric
simile has now
become the content of the description of nature (1.271–79):
principio uenti uis uerberat incita pontum
ingentisque ruit nauis et nubila differt,
interdum rapido percurrens turbine campos
arboribus magnis sternit montisque supremos
siluifragis uexat flabris: ita perfurit acri 275

First Similes in Epic 203
First of all the whipped-up power of the wind whacks the ocean
and flattens
huge ships and scatters the clouds, and racing over the plains
with snatching
whirlwind it strews them with great trees and harries the tops of
the mountains
with wood-smashing blasts: with such keen growling it rages
and howls with
threatening grumbling, the wind.31 There exist, therefore,
without doubt, invis-
ible bodies of wind, which scour the sea, the lands, even the
clouds of the sky
and snatch them along, harrying them with sudden whirlwind ...
At this point he shifts into an analogy, one of his favored
argumentative tech-
niques.32 The analogy illustrates his argument about the wind
by referring to
another natural force which has an analogous impact on the
environment,
and which can be seen—a river in flood (1.280–2):
64. ... nec ratione fluunt alia stragemque propagant 280
et cum mollis aquae fertur natura repente
flumine abundanti ...
... nor do they [the invisible bodies of wind] flow or wreak their
havoc in any
other way than when the soft nature of water is carried along in
a suddenly
overflowing stream ...
Lucretius develops the vision of the river in flood with great
energy over the
next eight lines, describing the devastation it inflicts on woods
and bridges
and rocks. Once we have this vivid picture in our minds, he
returns to the
wind, and at this point he finally turns his scientific analogy
into the overt
form of a simile, which has so far been avoided, and which
strictly need never
have been used, as he says that the blasts of the invisible wind
are like a strong
stream (1.290–97)33:
sic igitur debent uenti quoque flamina ferri, 290
quae ueluti ualidum cum flumen procubuere
quamlibet in partem, trudunt res ante ruuntque
impetibus crebris, interdum uertice torto

Like this, therefore, must the blasts of wind also be carried,
which when like a
powerful stream they have plunged in whatever direction, they
shove things in
front and they flatten them with repeated assaults, sometimes
they snatch them
up in a twisted eddy and rapidly carry them in a whirling spin.
Wherefore, there
absolutely do exist bodies of wind, invisible, since in their
impact and behavior
we find them to rival mighty rivers which have a body openly
visible to all.
This is a novel kind of simile, comparing one force of nature to
another force
of nature, instead of comparing a hero to a force of nature, as
Homer had
done in his similes of a river in flood in the Iliad, the models
for Lucretius’s
river in flood, where Diomedes and Ajax had been compared to

smashing down bridges and fences (5.87–94; 11.492–96).34 The
wind and the
water share fundamental natural characteristics, so that both the
vehicle and
the tenor are having their natures illuminated in the
comparison.35 In fact,
in Lucretius we have a case with elements of identity as well as
of similarity,
since the wind and the river share many bodies. No entity is
made up of one
single kind of atom, as Lucretius explains in detail later in the
first book:
the same elements make up sky, sea, land, rivers, sun, fruits,
trees and living
things, with everything depending on the organization and
arrangement
of the primordia (1.820–22; cf. 2.581–88). These two forces,
then, will even
have some corpora caeca in common, as Lucretius suggests with
characteristic
plays on the similarities of the words used to describe the
motion both of
wind and water: fluunt (280), flumine (282), fluctibus (289),
flamina (290),
and flumen (291).36
The traditional epic simile is here being harnessed to serve the
purpose of
a completely different kind of explanatory model. Yet Lucretius
is nonethe-
less fully alive to the Homeric template of a programmatic
opening simile
sequence, and he emulates Homer by aiming for his own kind of
programmatic
effect, so that these lines are presented “as a showpiece, even as

to chart the fluctuations between order and chaos in the
unprecedented social
organization of the Achaean host: Lucretius, at first glance,
appears to have
pressed down on one side of the balance by using his
68. programmatic sequence
of analogy and simile to present a devastating image of chaos
and destruction,
taking over Homer’s similes of chaotic storm in order to do so.
Within the
larger context of the opening sequence, however, this
programmatic image of
chaos is the second part of a diptych, for immediately before the
wind/water
analogy/simile Lucretius has given us an extended description
of harmoni-
ous growth, with the birth of new vegetation and new animals
(1.250–64).38
The two aspects of nature, the creative and the destructive,
complement each
other, since to the Epicurean they are indissolubly part of the
same natural
processes: without death there can be no new birth (1.262–64;
2.569–80).39
It is clearly important, then, that this programmatic image of
chaos is
counter-balanced by the immediately preceding image of
harmony, with the
two together giving an overall image of the cycles of nature.
Yet there is a
strong persistence to the programmatically catastrophic power
of the storm
of wind and water, as captured in the poem’s first simile, and
we may observe
this persistence at two levels, the microcosmic and the
macrocosmic.
At the microcosmic level, the opening evocation of the power of
chaotic
storm has an enduring effect throughout the poem because the
69. reality of
atomic physics means that the order of Lucretius’s universe is
ultimately
grounded in chaos. The emphatic line which concludes the
entire proof of
the existence of invisible bodies sums up the previous sixty
lines with a tell-
ing pun, where caecis means both “invisible” and also “blind,
purposeless”:
corporibus caecis igitur natura gerit res (“Nature therefore
carries on affairs
by means of invisible/blind bodies,” 1.328). According to the
challenging vi-
sion of Epicurean physics, order and predictability at the level
of the senses
emerge from chaotic unpredictability at the atomic level, where
we can imagine
nothing but the purposeless and undirected buffetings of the
atoms, which
are generated ultimately by the randomness of the “swerve”
(clinamen).40 The

swerve occurs “at an uncertain time and in uncertain places”
(incerto tempore
.../incertisque locis, 2.218–19), “neither in a certain area of
place nor at a certain
time” (nec regione loci certa nec tempore certo, 2.293). As a
result, the atoms
are in constantly restless motion (2.95–132), and Lucretius
regularly suggests
a paradoxical analogy between the atoms’ perpetual error
(2.132) or lack of
quies (2.95) and the fate awaiting human beings who fail to
understand the
truth about subsensory reality. As student-philosophers we will
achieve quies
only if we acknowledge that there is no quies at the atomic
level: “It is the
central atomist paradox, that certain knowledge of the endless
motion of the
atoms brings ἀταραξία.”41 Like the people who do not
understand celestial
phenomena at the beginning of Book 6, who “are carried along
wandering in
their blind way of reasoning” (errantes caeca ratione feruntur,
6.67), we will
wander in blindness unless we grasp that the constituent
elements of matter
are always wandering in blindness.42
71. Out of this microcosmic chaos, in a way that Lucretius aims to
explain to
us over the course of his first two books, fixed patterns of
certitude and pre-
dictability in the life-cycle do emerge, and at this upper level
all the language
of un-certainty has its prefix removed. There are, for example,
no Centaurs
or tree-born men or Chimaeras, Lucretius tells us, and his
explanation plays
with the common elements of the words for “certain,” “create,”
“mother,” and
“grow” (2.707–10):
... omnia quando
seminibus certis certa genetrice creata
conseruare genus crescentia posse uidemus.
scilicet id certa fieri ratione necessust. 710
since all things, created from certain seeds from a certain
mother, we see to be
able to preserve their genus as they grow. Definitely it must be
that this happens
on the basis of a certain rationale.43

Again, this certainty of Epicurean physics is based on a
fundamental random-
ness, which is one reason why the first simile is an appropriate
programmatic
emblem, because here we see the massive uncontrollable power
of natural
forces, existing in their own realm with no relation to us, as
wholly indepen-
dent entities with their own kind of patterns. If the first simile
is an emblem
of nature out of control, we are encouraged to reflect that it is
natural for
nature to be out of control.
At the macrocosmic level, the sheerly destructive impact of the
storm-wind
also remains a potent image all the way through the poem, for it
captures the
“magnificence of the forces of the atomist universe” and also
stands for the
73. aspects of the natural world which are most likely to be “a
potential stimu-
lus to superstition”: as a result, the opening analogy and simile
sequence of
chaotic wind and water “has a programmatic function,
foreshadowing later
treatments of natural catastrophe on both the large and the small
scale.”44
In general terms at the macroscopic level, the universe exhibits
a continual
state of strife among its constituent members, in such a way that
the ulti-
mate destruction of the universe in its currently constituted
form is certain
(5.380–83):
denique tantopere inter se cum maxima mundi 380
pugnent membra, pio nequaquam concita bello,
nonne uides aliquam longi certaminis ollis
posse dari finem?
Finally, since the large-scale components of the world fight
among themselves
to such an extent, stirred up in a war that is by no means a holy
war, don’t you
see that they can be given some end of their long strife?
The same metaphor of a war between the components of the
universe is found
elsewhere (2.573–76):
sic aequo geritur certamine principiorum
ex infinito contractum tempore bellum. 575
nunc hic nunc illic superant uitalia rerum
et superantur item.
74. So is war waged on the basis of an equal struggle of the
elements, fought from
time without beginning. Now here, now there, the life forces of
the universe
overcome and then in turn are overcome.

In particular, the catastrophic power of wind is consistently
Lucretius’s
favored possibility for the end of the mundus as we know it.45
This might
take the form of a colossal hurricane from outside the mundus:
“Nor in fact
are bodies lacking which could by chance arise from infinite
space and cause
the collapse of this sum of things with a violent whirlwind”
(neque autem
corpora desunt/ex infinito quae possint forte coorta/corruere
hanc rerum uio-
lento turbine summam, 5.366–68). More commonly, it might be
the winds
beneath our feet, in subterranean caverns, which could tear the
world apart.
“If the subterranean winds did not blow back” in a different
direction in their
intermittent rampages, “then no power would rein things in and
check them
from destruction as they moved” (quod nisi respirent uenti, uis
nulla refrenet/
res neque ab exitio possit reprehendere euntis, 6.568–69; cf.
75. 5.104–9). A vivid
picture of the fear aroused by the rampaging of subterranean
winds comes
in Book 6 (577–607), a passage culminating in an evocation of
the terror felt
during an earthquake by people who casually assume the world
will last for
ever (6.601–7):
proinde licet quamuis caelum terramque reantur
incorrupta fore aeternae mandata saluti:
et tamen interdum praesens uis ipsa pericli
subdit et hunc stimulum quadam de parte timoris,
ne pedibus raptim tellus subtracta feratur 605
in barathrum rerumque sequatur prodita summa
funditus et fiat mundi confusa ruina.
So then, they may think as much as they like that the heaven
and earth will
be indestructible, consigned to safety for ever—still, now and
then, the actual
present force of danger applies even this goad of fear from one
direction or
another, lest the earth, suddenly taken away from under their
feet, be carried
into the abyss, and the sum of things, left in the air from the
bottom up, should
follow and the world become a jumbled ruin.
The winds, then, will probably overpower our cosmos in the
end. For an
Epicurean, who can manage a series of perspectival shifts from
the infinitesimal
to the infinite, the destruction of our universe by colossal
storm-winds is no
final moment of annihilation. The end of the cosmos may look

ing and conclusive victory for the forces of chaos and
destruction, but if you
take the long-term Epicurean view, then the end of our universe
is only a very
large-scale dissolution of a compound body, one that, like all
dissolutions of

compound bodies, will return the constituent parts to the
available sum of
matter, ready for new compounds and new forms.46
The threat to cosmic order posed by the annihilating power of
the storm-
wind was, of course, part of Hesiodic myth, embodied in
particular in the op-
ponent of Zeus who is most fully developed in Hesiod’s
narrative, Typhoeus.47
In a manner first analyzed by the pioneering study of Hardie
1986, Lucretius
has taken over the prevalent scholarly allegorizing readings of
such mythic
narratives in terms of natural philosophy, but he has
“demythologized” the
content completely, retaining the physics and jettisoning the
fable.48 In his turn,
Virgil will use his programmatic opening simile sequence to
“remythologize”
the power of the catastrophic winds of Lucretius, as we shall
now see.49
77. Before we enter the Aeneid, we note that the first simile in
Virgil’s poem
of nature already shows him engaging with Lucretius’s first
simile, as he rows
hard upstream against the mighty river of Lucretius (G. 1.199–
203).50 The
blind river of Lucretian nature will sweep Virgil away if he
releases his grip,
in an image of the constant effort required to create and
maintain the human
world of the Georgics, so distinctively different from that of the
De rerum na-
tura. Virgil’s immediate context is the importance of keeping up
the relentless
work of selecting the right seeds—semina, a word regularly
used by Lucretius
to describe his atoms (e.g., 1.501, 2.773), and explicitly
introduced early in
his first book as one of a range of terms he will use for the
atoms (1.58–61,
together with materiem, genitalia corpora, corpora prima). In a
pointed play on
Lucretius’s opening proof of the existence of invisible bodies as
manifested in
the wind, Virgil begins his programmatic simile sequence with
an emphatic
declaration that the seeds in his poem are ones you can see:
semina uidi equi-

much force you
exert in this unremitting work of selection, he goes on to say,
degeneration
is always possible, as he resumes with yet more emphasis on his
seeing of the
seeds (G. 1.197–203)52:
uidi lecta diu et multo spectata labore
degenerare tamen, ni uis humana quotannis
maxima quaeque manu legeret: sic omnia fatis
in peius ruere ac retro sublapsa referri, 200
non aliter quam qui aduerso uix flumine lembum

I have seen seeds chosen over time and checked with much
labor nonetheless
degenerate, if human force weren’t picking out all the biggest
ones by hand
every year: in this way all things, by fate, plunge to the worse,
slide down and
are carried backwards, just like a person who rows his craft
with difficulty up-
stream, if he happens to relax his effort, and the current
snatches him headlong
downstream.
Lucretius’s programmatic destructive river in spate appears at
the end of
the first book of the Georgics, as “Eridanus, king of rivers, roils
woods in his
insane whirl and sweeps them away, carrying along flocks,
stables and all, all
over the plains” (proluit insano contorquens uertice
siluas/fluuiorum rex Eri-
danus camposque per omnis/cum stabulis armenta tulit, G.
1.481–83). There
the river in spate is part of a series of natural catastrophes
responding to the
assassination of Caesar, a graphic portrayal of a world in chaos,
culminating
in a simile which looks back to the first simile as it conjures up
a yet more
frightening image of humans’ inability to maintain control over
their world
(G. 1.511–14)53:
saeuit toto Mars impius orbe,
ut cum carceribus sese effudere quadrigae,
80. addunt in spatia, et frustra retinacula tendens
fertur equis auriga neque audit currus habenas.

chariots have poured
out of the starting-gates, they speed on the laps, and, hanging
uselessly onto
the reins, the charioteer is carried along by his horses and the
chariot does not
respond to his control.
