looked at the Games as an opportunity
to develop a set of Values

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Introduce Powerpoint Presentation topic. Everyone is talking about the London Olympic games. But there is more to these games than just sports.
  • #3 Briefly talk about the history of the modern Olympic Games. The Games were the brainchild of a French nobleman, Pierre de Coubertin. When he was young, Coubertin was a very keen sportsman. As he grew older he developed a passionate belief that sport could encourage peace throughout the world and bring people from all over the world together. Coubertin was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games and travelled around the world, spending his own money, trying to persuade people to revive them. Eventually he managed to bring together representatives of many different countries in Paris, in 1894, and the Olympic Movement was begun. The first Summer olympic games took place in Athens in 1896.
  • #4 Introduce the idea of the Olympic values. Go through the key words in the slide and stress that in the vision of Pierre de Coubertin, the VALUES were a core aspect of the whole games event….something from which everyone could benefit. There are 3 Olympic Values and 4 Paralympic Values. See next slide.
  • #5 As this slide opens, all the 7 values are revealed. Say that in this presentation we are trying to think about each of them and how to put them into practice in real life situations. Also say that we try to look at them from a Christian perspective. This is because we believe that every good thing comes from God. These are all values and qualities that as Christians we ought to demonstrate in our lives as witnesses of Christ.
  • #6 Look at the questions at the bottom of the slide. Explain that in this presentation we ask these two questions for each of the 7 values. As each value is shown from the next slide we first think of ways how to show that value in practical ways. Each slide is then followed by another slide with a quote from the bible or a quote by a saint. This illustrate the meaning of the value in question from a Christian perspective.
  • #7 Talk about the value RESPECT. The captions in black show what this Olympic value refers to or points at how it should be put in practice. Briefly talk about these captions. Then lead discussion into looking at the same value from the Christian point of view as you move to the next slide and the quote.
  • #8 Read the quote (or ask someone in the group to read). Briefly talk about the key words and phrases or invite someone to talk about how the words in the quote remind us of how to live the Olympic value in a Christian way.
  • #9 Talk about the value EXCELLENCE. The captions in black show what this Olympic value refers to or points at how it should be put in practice. Briefly talk about these captions. Then lead discussion into looking at the same value from the Christian point of view as you move to the next slide and the quote.
  • #10 Read the quote (or ask someone in the group to read). Briefly talk about the key words and phrases or invite someone to talk about how the words in the quote remind us of how to live the Olympic value in a Christian way.
  • #11 Talk about the value FRIENDSHIP. The captions in black show what this Olympic value refers to or points at how it should be put in practice. Briefly talk about these captions. Then lead discussion into looking at the same value from the Christian point of view as you move to the next slide and the quote.
  • #12 Read the quote (or ask someone in the group to read). Briefly talk about the key words and phrases or invite someone to talk about how the words in the quote remind us of how to live the Olympic value in a Christian way.
  • #13 Talk about the value COURAGE. The captions in black show what this Olympic value refers to or points at how it should be put in practice. Briefly talk about these captions. Then lead discussion into looking at the same value from the Christian point of view as you move to the next slide and the quote.
  • #14 Read the quote (or ask someone in the group to read). Briefly talk about the key words and phrases or invite someone to talk about how the words in the quote remind us of how to live the Olympic value in a Christian way.
  • #15 Talk about the value DETERMINATION. The captions in black show what this Olympic value refers to or points at how it should be put in practice. Briefly talk about these captions. Then lead discussion into looking at the same value from the Christian point of view as you move to the next slide and the quote.
  • #16 Read the quote (or ask someone in the group to read). Briefly talk about the key words and phrases or invite someone to talk about how the words in the quote remind us of how to live the Olympic value in a Christian way.
  • #17 Talk about the value INSPIRATION. The captions in black show what this Olympic value refers to or points at how it should be put in practice. Briefly talk about these captions. Then lead discussion into looking at the same value from the Christian point of view as you move to the next slide and the quote.
  • #18 Read the quote (or ask someone in the group to read). Briefly talk about the key words and phrases or invite someone to talk about how the words in the quote remind us of how to live the Olympic value in a Christian way.
  • #19 Talk about the value EQUALITY. The captions in black show what this Olympic value refers to or points at how it should be put in practice. Briefly talk about these captions. Then lead discussion into looking at the same value from the Christian point of view as you move to the next slide and the quote.
  • #20 Read the quote (or ask someone in the group to read). Briefly talk about the key words and phrases or invite someone to talk about how the words in the quote remind us of how to live the Olympic value in a Christian way.
  • #21 Conclude by reading and explaining the quote shown in this slide ( 1 Cor 9:25) St Paul, writing to the Christian community in Corinth, Greece, who knew very well what the Greek Olympic games were all about, stresses that as Christians we too ought to go through a regime of strict training. The Olympic athletes used to do this for a wreath made out of laurel leaves which naturally withered away very quickly. As Christians we train, we face difficulties, we try to win and we try to put these Olympic and Christian values in practice to be crowned by a heavenly reward which is unity with God forever. The reward that God promises is an everlasting one and not a gold medal or an honour that can only be enjoyed for a limited period of time.
