The ancient Olympic Games began in 776 BCE in Greece and continued for nearly 1200 years until being abolished by the Roman emperor Theodosius I in 393 CE due to their pagan influences. Approximately 1500 years later, Pierre de Coubertin began reviving the Olympic Games. In 1894, Coubertin organized a meeting with delegates from nine countries where he successfully proposed reviving the Olympic Games. The delegates voted to establish the International Olympic Committee with Coubertin to organize the Games, with the first modern Olympics held in Athens in 1896.
