Over 21 000 universities analyzed, 12 000
ranked.
Based on composite indicator, built on 4
indicators: - impact (weight 50 %)
- presence
- openness (weight 50 %)

6. Ranking Web of Universities
Interest on Openness of the Universities:
Presence indicator: the total number of
webpages hosted in the main web domain of
the university as indexed by the Google.
Openness: the global effort to set up
institutional research repositories is explicitly
recognized and it takes into account the
number of rich files published in dedicated
websites according to the Google Scholar

Finland 2012
Report by the Finnish Academy:
“Publication numbers in Finnish science and research
and citations to Finnish research publications are at a
good level… Nonetheless, it is interesting to consider
why Switzerland, for instance, continues to have such
strong success: is there something about Swiss
science and research funding or about university
practices in Switzerland that could be imported and
applied to Finland?”

seem to be on their way up also in Openness and The
Netherlands is keeping its very strong position.

Almost all significant
improvements in ranking
happened in Openness
indicator

14. Conclusions
Openness does matter in Ranking Web of
Universities. Many smaller countries gain their
rankings because of their OA-policies. And
e.g. Brazil almost only because of openness.
No relationship between openness and
relative citation impact can be made yet. - A
longer time-scale for reliable results is
needed.
Is RWU methodology reliable? Big changes
happened in six months. Too big?

15. Conclusions
In any case, Openness and the visibility of
research in the Web in becoming more and
more important for universities and it should
be taken seriously: “In the second decade of the
21st century the Web is key for the future of all the
university missions, as it is already the most important
scholarly communication tool, the future channel for
the off-campus distance learning, the open forum for
the community engagement and the universal
showcase for attracting talent, funding and
resources.” (Ranking Web of Universities)
