3. Objective
Take an idea(s) or concept(s) and
do something with it/them that
was interactive and hadn’t been
done before.
Problem
learning and integrating new &
existing technologies to create
something unique and interesting.
Solution
Collaborate with a mentor from
overseas to make real time
chronophotography a reality
& bring my vision to life.
Result
A unique Interactive experience
combining centuries old Longsword
Traditions with a modern take on
Turn of the century photography.

Exhibit
Before the Rose
Garden could be set up,
a floor plan & mock-up of
the final exhibit, including
the space requirements, had
to be submitted for approval by
committee. To this end I measured
out the space needed and mocked
everything up in Sketchup. Once the
exhibit was approved all that was left
to do was some simple
heavy lifting

The Long Sword
In 15th century manuscripts like “Goliath” shown here
the techniques are shown at either the start or the ending
position. With chronography you can capture the whole
movement in one image without the need for lengthy
explanations like in the manuscripts.
Updating Century Old
Photographic Techniques
1882, French Scientist and
physiologist, Étienne-Jules Marey
creates the first camera capable of
taking multiple exposures ver a single
image creating Chronophotographs
showing a subject’s movements over a
given time frame.
Digital Chronophotography
With the technical help of
Hino Boekhout, I was able to take a
web cam feed and emulate the same
effect digitally in real time.

Fencing is that Olympic
thing right?
Yes, there is Olympic fencing which is derived
from the mid 17th through 19th century rapier
techniques; however, Fencing is a term that
spans all types of combat involving both
bladed and blunt weaponry.
Longsword Combat in
15th Century Europe
While actual fencing was varied and complex,
the essentials of the european fighting style were
fairly straight forward.
Low & wide stances provide a solid foundation
for all of the stances, the arms wound against
each other creating greater leverage for each
swing of the sword, and a basic set of stances
provided the fencer with a library of moves
and counter movements for facing off against
any opponent.
While some of these techniques may, at first,
seem silly or awkward, each move was formed
out of pragmatism and necessity. Each move
designed to keep the center of balance low
and squarely offer the top of one’s feet to take
advantage of the power of the lower body and
the leverage of the arms.

Historical Fencing
What’s with all the flowers?
The Rose Garden is a colloquialism coined by the
fencing masters of long ago. To understand the
term you must understand that the training swords
they used, Federschwerts were steel, sword like
objects, sometimes just blunt swords.
When the steel would contact steel, regardless of
how blunt, small nicks and metal shavings would
form, and when a fencer would be hit upon the
hand or forearm, a small line of cuts would be
made; from which, blood droplets would bloom on
the surface of the skin.
This was known as the blooming of the rose,
hence the rose garden is the place where
fencing practice takes place.
Chrono-
photography
Putting time on display.
Flash Back to 1882, French Scientist and
physiologist, Étienne-Jules Marey creates the
first camera capa le of taking what he calls
chronophotographs (Time Photography).
The Chronophoto Process involves taking multiple
images in sequence and overlaying those images
onto one photo positive or negative. The end
result is an image showing the movements
taken by a subject.
Chronophotography today.
Flash Forward to the present, the use of digital
chronophotography can be seen everywhere in
the media from Extreme sports to art installations.
Real-time
chronophotography
Partnering up with Heino Boekhout, a
photographer and technology consultant from the
Netherlands, I was able to capture, in real time,
the movements of light and dark subjects through
a webcam feed.

This pamphlet provided people with
all the information about the exhibit
while I was training people how to do
the various longsword techniques for
their chronophotos.
The pamphlet goes into detail about
the exhibit, Chronophotography, 15th
century longsword combat, and why
the exhibit is called what it is.
