OLD ALAZAN RANCH !1
About the Ranch
Established in the 1800's by Thomas “Papa Tom” Rawls and wife Dollie. "Papa Tom"
was a classic Texas "character" and well known for his confrontations with Pancho Villa.
He was a cattle rancher and also ran a stage line from Marfa to Lajitas. “Red” and
Waynelle Strachan bought the ranch in 1980 and enjoyed getting to know Jack Rawls, Jr.
(grandson of "Papa Tom") and Jack's wife, Joy.  Old Alazan offers a unique opportunity
for folks to escape the city and experience a real ranch visit. Join us for some real Texas
hospitality at a leisurely pace. Located deep in the Texas Big Bend, Old Alazan is a
family-owned ranch, but we welcome hunters, adventurers, small retreats, corporate
meetings, and seminars. At Old Alazan, we encourage you to leave your wristwatch
behind, because here we measure time by the length of the shadows.

Hunting at Old Alazan
The Old Alazan Ranch (“The Ranch”) offers some of the best free range deer, aoudad
sheep, quail and javelina hunting in the world. The Ranch is located in Southwest Texas
and borders the Big Bend Ranch State Park. The area boasts a wide variety of terrain;
deep, rocky canyons carve their way through majestic mesas, plateaus and valleys to
create a rich ecosystem abundant with flora and fauna. The Ranch also has a complex
system of water distribution lines and feeders to further enhance the habitat for game.
Critters that roam The Ranch include mule deer, aoudad (barbary) sheep, mountain lion,
bobcat, javelina, coyote, fox, rabbit, badger, eagle, raven, road runner, quail, dove and
more. Sunrise and sunset at The Ranch can be breathtaking, so bring a camera.
Primary hunting months at the Ranch are the winter months of November through
February. Temperatures during those months range from the mid to high 20’s in the early
morning to the 60’s and 70’s in the afternoon. Hunters are urged to dress in layers to best
adapt to the wide variety of temperatures throughout the day. Hunting days at the The
Ranch start before daylight. Breakfast is typically served an hour before daylight (6:00
am) and departure from the Ranch at first light is typical (7:00 a.m.). Hunters will be
transported throughout the Ranch via off-road vehicle on a matrix of scenic, backcountry
roads. Following a “buggy” ride, pursuit of game will typically be on foot and can be
arduous. Glassing is an important element of hunting at The Ranch, so be prepared to
glass for extended periods of time. Bring a pair of binoculars and a spotting scope if you
have one.
Hunters will either return to the Ranch House for lunch or carry lunch with them for the
day. Return time in the evening will typically be shortly after last light or later depending
on where the day’s hunt leads. If an animal is harvested, extraction of the trophy and
meat in a timely fashion is an absolute priority. Depending on the location of the kill,
animals with either be dragged out whole to a location where an off road vehicle can take
over, or quartered and packed out on foot. Extraction, documentation and storage of the
animal will be completed prior to any additional hunting. A ranch style dinner will meet
the hunters upon their return in the evening.
Hunting trips at the Old Alazan are for the purpose of hunting. Once an animal has
been harvested, clients can add-on additional hunts or the hunt will be complete. We
value this beautiful natural resource and strive to both enhance all our hunters
experiences and the longevity of The Ranch itself by not needlessly pressuring, scaring or
unnecessarily disturbing the wild animals. Hunters are asked to bring coolers for
transportation of meat and trophies. The Ranch does not ship nor deliver meat or
trophies. Shipping of meat and taxidermy are the responsibility of the client.
OLD ALAZAN RANCH !3
Accommodations
The Ranch features a main residence occupied by the Strachan’s as well as a bunk house
for hunters and explorers. The bunk house includes sleeping accommodations for up to
twelve and provides individual sleeping rooms in addition to a dorm-style sleeping area,
den, sitting area, in-house kitchen and plenty of atmosphere. Hunters will be situated
comfortably in the bunk house for the duration of the hunt.
Additional facilities include a cool room, ice maker and meat cutting room for proper
care and storage of meat. A spacious outdoor patio complete with a fire pit and ample
seating lie adjacent to horse corrals, a feed shed, and tack room. Meals can be cooked
over the fire and served on the outside patio weather permitting.
Cook. The Alazan will have an in-house cook whom produces the best ranch-style meals
in the Southwest. Sit back and enjoy these meals prepared with fresh meats and produce.
The Ranch is BYOB, so please feel free to bring your favorite adult beverages along with
you.

Desert Mule Deer Hunts
The Old Alazan Ranch offers fully guided desert mule deer hunts. These hunts are
offered as a rifle or archery hunt. Hunts run November through January. The Ranch
boasts a flourishing mule deer population rich with bucks. Tags are issued through the
Managed Lands Deer Permits (MLDP) and are limited on a season by season basis.
Season dates can also change on an annual basis. The Ranch runs a strict management
program targeting specific classifications of animals. Clients will be guided daily by the
best guides in the business. Guides will spend as much time as necessary locating a target
buck which will be pursued on foot. Quality bucks are typically not found at the feeders
during the daylight hours and will not be shot off of feeders at any time. We pride
ourselves on ‘fair chase’ tactics and our ability to harvest quality bucks in their natural
habitat. There is an additional $2,500 trophy fee for bucks harvested 180” or larger. It is
the responsibility of the guide to call a buck a trophy in the field. Trophy fees will not be
charged in arrears if a buck is shot without identified as a trophy.
The Ranch provides exceptional opportunity and success rates on our deer hunts, but we
cannot guarantee opportunity nor success. We are hunting free range animals and as
such, we do guarantee a great time, with great guides, hosts, accommodations and
scenery. If an animal is wounded, but not recovered, and the guide deems that a fatal
shot has been made, the hunter will be considered tagged out. The remainder of the
hunt, within reason, will be used looking for that specific wounded animal.
Clients are expected to purchase and have available a valid Texas hunting license ($315
non resident) as well as applicable gear, coolers and game bags listed on the gear checklist.
Additional details on licenses can be found at http://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/
outdoor-annual/licenses/hunting-licenses-and-permits. Please coordinate meat and
trophy transport prior to arriving at the Ranch.
OLD ALAZAN RANCH !5
Aoudad (Barbary) Sheep Hunts
The Old Alazan offers free range aoudad (barbary) sheep hunts from November through
February. These hunts are offered as a rifle or archery hunt. The Ranch supports some
of the best free range aoudad hunts in the world. Experienced guides will lead clients on
a true “sheep hunt”. These animals are free range and are hunted in a manner consistent
with hunting Rocky Mountain or Desert Bighorn Sheep. We pride ourselves on our
approach to hunting these sheep and our ability to harvest large mature rams outside the
confines of a high fence. Guides will spend as much time as necessary locating a mature
ram. Typically this is accomplished by glassing at longer distances. The final stalk will be
on foot and can be arduous.
Guides will assist clients in search of rams 26” or larger, with a preference on rams 28” or
longer. Multiple 30”+ rams are harvested off of the property every year.
The Ranch maintains an exceptional opportunity and success rates on our aoudad hunts,
but we cannot guarantee opportunity nor success. We are hunting free range animals and
as such, we do guarantee a great time, with great guides, hosts, accommodations and
scenery. If an animal is wounded, but not recovered, and the guide deems that a fatal
shot has been made, the hunter will be considered tagged out. The remainder of the
hunt, within reason, will be used looking for that specific wounded animal.
Clients are expected to purchase and have available a valid Texas type 157 5-day exotic
hunting license as well as applicable gear, coolers and game bags listed on the gear
checklist. Additional details on licenses can be found at http://tpwd.texas.gov/
regulations/outdoor-annual/licenses/hunting-licenses-and-permits. Please coordinate
meat and trophy transport prior to arriving at the Ranch.
OLD ALAZAN RANCH !6
Additional Hunts
The Ranch offers a variety of alternative hunts either as a stand-alone hunt or as an add-
on to a mule deer or aoudad hunt. Following a successful harvest, aoudad and deer
hunters can choose to add-on a quail, dove, predator and/or javelina hunt to complete
their Texas adventure (as long as the season is open). Quail hunts are also offered on a
stand alone basis. It is important to note that there can be multiple hunters in camp. As
such; quail/javelina/predator hunting will only be available during times and at locations
where such activity will not adversely affect an ongoing or future hunt.
Quail Hunts
Both Scaled (“Blue”) Quail and Gambel Quail are abundant on The Ranch. The Ranch
offers fully guided quail hunts for groups of 2 or more. Hunts are 2 days in length and
include accommodations for 1 or 2 nights complete with a wonderful ranch dinner.
Lunches and breakfast are also included with the package.
Clients are expected to purchase and have available a valid Texas hunting license as well
as applicable gear, coolers and game bags listed on the gear checklist. Additional details
on licenses can be found at http://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/licenses/
hunting-licenses-and-permits.
OLD ALAZAN RANCH !7
Javelina Hunts
Javelina roam the canyons, plateaus and mesas of the Alazan. The Ranch can provide
one day javelina hunts as an add-on to mule deer, aoudad and/or quail hunt. Please be
aware that javelina are considered a game animal in the state of Texas. Hunters will be
required to take their javelina with them when they depart and keep the meat “edible”
until the javelina reaches its final destination.
Clients are expected to purchase and have available a valid Texas hunting license as well
as applicable gear, coolers and game bags listed on the gear checklist. Additional details
on licenses can be found at http://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/licenses/
hunting-licenses-and-permits.

  • 2. About the Ranch Established in the 1800's by Thomas “Papa Tom” Rawls and wife Dollie. "Papa Tom" was a classic Texas "character" and well known for his confrontations with Pancho Villa.  He was a cattle rancher and also ran a stage line from Marfa to Lajitas. “Red” and Waynelle Strachan bought the ranch in 1980 and enjoyed getting to know Jack Rawls, Jr. (grandson of "Papa Tom") and Jack's wife, Joy.  Old Alazan offers a unique opportunity for folks to escape the city and experience a real ranch visit. Join us for some real Texas hospitality at a leisurely pace. Located deep in the Texas Big Bend, Old Alazan is a family-owned ranch, but we welcome hunters, adventurers, small retreats, corporate meetings, and seminars. At Old Alazan, we encourage you to leave your wristwatch behind, because here we measure time by the length of the shadows. Waynelle Strachan J.H. “Red” Strachan

  • 3. Hunting at Old Alazan The Old Alazan Ranch (“The Ranch”) offers some of the best free range deer, aoudad sheep, quail and javelina hunting in the world. The Ranch is located in Southwest Texas and borders the Big Bend Ranch State Park. The area boasts a wide variety of terrain; deep, rocky canyons carve their way through majestic mesas, plateaus and valleys to create a rich ecosystem abundant with flora and fauna. The Ranch also has a complex system of water distribution lines and feeders to further enhance the habitat for game. Critters that roam The Ranch include mule deer, aoudad (barbary) sheep, mountain lion, bobcat, javelina, coyote, fox, rabbit, badger, eagle, raven, road runner, quail, dove and more. Sunrise and sunset at The Ranch can be breathtaking, so bring a camera. Primary hunting months at the Ranch are the winter months of November through February. Temperatures during those months range from the mid to high 20’s in the early morning to the 60’s and 70’s in the afternoon. Hunters are urged to dress in layers to best adapt to the wide variety of temperatures throughout the day. Hunting days at the The Ranch start before daylight. Breakfast is typically served an hour before daylight (6:00 am) and departure from the Ranch at first light is typical (7:00 a.m.). Hunters will be transported throughout the Ranch via off-road vehicle on a matrix of scenic, backcountry roads. Following a “buggy” ride, pursuit of game will typically be on foot and can be arduous. Glassing is an important element of hunting at The Ranch, so be prepared to glass for extended periods of time. Bring a pair of binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Hunters will either return to the Ranch House for lunch or carry lunch with them for the day. Return time in the evening will typically be shortly after last light or later depending on where the day’s hunt leads. If an animal is harvested, extraction of the trophy and meat in a timely fashion is an absolute priority. Depending on the location of the kill, animals with either be dragged out whole to a location where an off road vehicle can take over, or quartered and packed out on foot. Extraction, documentation and storage of the animal will be completed prior to any additional hunting. A ranch style dinner will meet the hunters upon their return in the evening. Hunting trips at the Old Alazan are for the purpose of hunting. Once an animal has been harvested, clients can add-on additional hunts or the hunt will be complete. We value this beautiful natural resource and strive to both enhance all our hunters experiences and the longevity of The Ranch itself by not needlessly pressuring, scaring or unnecessarily disturbing the wild animals. Hunters are asked to bring coolers for transportation of meat and trophies. The Ranch does not ship nor deliver meat or trophies. Shipping of meat and taxidermy are the responsibility of the client. • 5. Desert Mule Deer Hunts The Old Alazan Ranch offers fully guided desert mule deer hunts. These hunts are offered as a rifle or archery hunt. Hunts run November through January. The Ranch boasts a flourishing mule deer population rich with bucks. Tags are issued through the Managed Lands Deer Permits (MLDP) and are limited on a season by season basis. Season dates can also change on an annual basis. The Ranch runs a strict management program targeting specific classifications of animals. Clients will be guided daily by the best guides in the business. Guides will spend as much time as necessary locating a target buck which will be pursued on foot. Quality bucks are typically not found at the feeders during the daylight hours and will not be shot off of feeders at any time. We pride ourselves on ‘fair chase’ tactics and our ability to harvest quality bucks in their natural habitat. There is an additional $2,500 trophy fee for bucks harvested 180” or larger. It is the responsibility of the guide to call a buck a trophy in the field. Trophy fees will not be charged in arrears if a buck is shot without identified as a trophy. The Ranch provides exceptional opportunity and success rates on our deer hunts, but we cannot guarantee opportunity nor success. We are hunting free range animals and as such, we do guarantee a great time, with great guides, hosts, accommodations and scenery. If an animal is wounded, but not recovered, and the guide deems that a fatal shot has been made, the hunter will be considered tagged out. The remainder of the hunt, within reason, will be used looking for that specific wounded animal. Clients are expected to purchase and have available a valid Texas hunting license ($315 non resident) as well as applicable gear, coolers and game bags listed on the gear checklist. Additional details on licenses can be found at http://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/ outdoor-annual/licenses/hunting-licenses-and-permits. Please coordinate meat and trophy transport prior to arriving at the Ranch. OLD ALAZAN RANCH !5
  • 6. Aoudad (Barbary) Sheep Hunts The Old Alazan offers free range aoudad (barbary) sheep hunts from November through February. These hunts are offered as a rifle or archery hunt. The Ranch supports some of the best free range aoudad hunts in the world. Experienced guides will lead clients on a true “sheep hunt”. These animals are free range and are hunted in a manner consistent with hunting Rocky Mountain or Desert Bighorn Sheep. We pride ourselves on our approach to hunting these sheep and our ability to harvest large mature rams outside the confines of a high fence. Guides will spend as much time as necessary locating a mature ram. Typically this is accomplished by glassing at longer distances. The final stalk will be on foot and can be arduous. Guides will assist clients in search of rams 26” or larger, with a preference on rams 28” or longer. Multiple 30”+ rams are harvested off of the property every year. The Ranch maintains an exceptional opportunity and success rates on our aoudad hunts, but we cannot guarantee opportunity nor success. Clients are expected to purchase and have available a valid Texas type 157 5-day exotic hunting license as well as applicable gear, coolers and game bags listed on the gear checklist. Additional details on licenses can be found at http://tpwd.texas.gov/ regulations/outdoor-annual/licenses/hunting-licenses-and-permits. • 7. Additional Hunts The Ranch offers a variety of alternative hunts either as a stand-alone hunt or as an add- on to a mule deer or aoudad hunt. Following a successful harvest, aoudad and deer hunters can choose to add-on a quail, dove, predator and/or javelina hunt to complete their Texas adventure (as long as the season is open). Quail hunts are also offered on a stand alone basis. It is important to note that there can be multiple hunters in camp. As such; quail/javelina/predator hunting will only be available during times and at locations where such activity will not adversely affect an ongoing or future hunt. Quail Hunts Both Scaled (“Blue”) Quail and Gambel Quail are abundant on The Ranch. The Ranch offers fully guided quail hunts for groups of 2 or more. Hunts are 2 days in length and include accommodations for 1 or 2 nights complete with a wonderful ranch dinner. Lunches and breakfast are also included with the package. Clients are expected to purchase and have available a valid Texas hunting license as well as applicable gear, coolers and game bags listed on the gear checklist.
