When you have a rare cancer like mesothelioma, it can be challenging to find treatment options as well as hope for your future. Clinical trials offer patients the opportunity to try the latest medications, surgical procedures or diagnostic screening tools which do provide realistic hope for longer, better quality of life. Many patients have questions about how to find clinical trials that they may be eligible for, understanding the different phases of a clinical trial and what to expect throughout the process. During our January session, we will discuss this and more!
The article discusses a new blood-based screening test for colon cancer that was recently approved by the FDA. However, experts have raised concerns about the test because it has not been shown to improve mortality rates compared to other screening methods. The test may be more effective at detecting advanced cancers rather than improving outcomes. While the test could increase screening rates by addressing challenges with current methods, doctors need more evidence that it actually reduces colon cancer deaths before widely incorporating it into practice.

I put this presentation together for my husband, a family doctor who presents to small community groups.
This marks my first attempt at following the Slide:ology approach.
This document discusses genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer risk. It notes that not everyone with breast cancer needs genetic testing, but certain high-risk groups should be referred for further evaluation, such as those diagnosed at a young age or with a family history. Genetic testing can find pathogenic mutations that increase cancer risk or identify variants of uncertain significance. A positive test result indicates increased cancer risks and screening/prevention options, while a negative result does not rule out hereditary risk based on personal/family history factors. Over time, the rate of uncertain variants from BRCA1/2 testing has declined as knowledge improves. Most breast cancers still do not have an identifiable inherited genetic mutation.
This document summarizes a project conducted at MayView Community Health Center aimed at increasing mammography rates among female patients ages 42-69. Key points:
- MayView serves a largely low-income Hispanic population but only 13% of eligible females received a mammogram in the past year, far below the national average.
- The project investigated barriers to mammography through patient surveys. Notable barriers included uncertainty around insurance processes and a lack of availability to complete surveys.
- Recommendations include leveraging previous research on promoting mammography among Hispanic populations, increasing physician recommendations, and follow-up phone calls. Continued barrier surveys could help pinpoint specific patient concerns.
This document summarizes a multi-site survey of customers at farmers' markets located at medical centers. It finds that across three sites - Duke University Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, and Penn State Hershey - the customer profiles were similar. Most customers were community members rather than patients or employees. Transportation was primarily by shuttle, walking, or driving. Customers reported good overall health but opportunities to increase fruit and vegetable intake. The markets provided an opportunity for nutritional counseling. The conclusions call for better outreach strategies and potential programs like "prescription produce", mobile markets, and community gardens.
The document discusses different treatment options for prostate cancer based on risk categories and disease stage, emphasizing the importance of accurate risk assessment and monitoring disease progression to initiate appropriate treatment early. It also stresses maintaining physical fitness during treatment and combining therapies when possible to achieve the best outcomes.

The study found that 17% of Pap tests ordered in their resident clinic were inappropriate based on USPSTF guidelines. They created an intervention called the "Pap Clinic" which used an EMR template to guide decision making and patient discussions about cervical cancer screening guidelines. After implementing this clinic, they found a statistically significant decrease in inappropriate Pap tests, from 17% pre-intervention to 1.7% post-intervention. While the results were promising, the study had limitations including a small sample size and potential for selection bias. The intervention showed that templates in EMRs have potential to improve adherence to screening guidelines.
This document discusses prostate cancer screening, diagnosis, staging, and treatment options. It covers PSA testing and digital rectal exams for screening. Biopsies and PSMA PET scans are used for diagnosis and staging. Risk stratification helps determine treatment, which may include radical prostatectomy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy drugs like abiraterone acetate and enzalutamide, chemotherapy like docetaxel, or bone-directed drugs for metastases. Complications of prostatectomy include blood transfusions, infections, incontinence, and erectile dysfunction. Radiotherapy and hormone therapies can cause side effects like fatigue, fluid retention, and liver enzyme changes.
The International Hepatobiliary Cancer Registry is a collaboration between the Mayo Clinic and the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation to create a registry of patients who have or are at risk of developing liver or bile duct cancers. The purpose is to identify risk factors, develop cell lines to study cancer risk factors and drug responses, determine survival rates, and collaborate with other institutions. Eligible participants must be 8 years or older and diagnosed with one of these cancers, at risk, or healthy volunteers like family members. Participation involves completing questionnaires, consenting to share health records, donating blood, and potentially providing tissue specimens if undergoing related medical procedures. Interested individuals should contact the listed Mayo Clinic staff to enroll or learn more.
- The document discusses the development and role of a prostate cancer nurse navigator (PCNN) program at Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF).
- It describes how the PCNN program was established in the 1990s and expanded over time to include activities like shared decision making, quality improvement initiatives, and coordinating multidisciplinary care.
- The PCNN serves as an advocate and resource for patients, helps facilitate shared decision making between patients and providers, and works to improve outcomes for the prostate cancer population.

Routine HIV screening is a proven, cost-effective public health intervention that can help stop the spread of AIDS in the U.S. Screening allows for earlier diagnosis and better health outcomes. While some argue HIV screening requires special procedures due to its stigma and history, opt-out screening models have shown to significantly reduce patient anxiety about testing and normalize HIV testing. Most Americans believe HIV screening should be treated like other routine health screenings.
Translating evidence into patient informationcmaverga
- The document discusses several issues related to patient care, including patients wanting more information and responsibility in their care, the limited time for information transfer during consultations, and patients having different preferred consulting styles.
- It also addresses challenges clinicians face in communicating risks to patients, the importance of patient education, and the need to provide decision support and build knowledge into the care pathway.
- The conclusion calls for making information open to all, providing decision support for patients, and using various mediums to engage with patients.
This document announces a conference on HPV infection among women with or at risk for HIV. It notes that HPV infection is common among HIV+ women and can lead to cervical cancer. While HAART has reduced AIDS, its effect on HPV and cervical dysplasia is unknown. The conference aims to investigate the role of HPV in HIV+ women and discuss treatment and prevention strategies like the HPV vaccine. Topics will include the epidemiology of HPV/HIV co-infection, treating cervical disease, updates on the HPV vaccine trial, and implementing HPV vaccination. The event is intended for physicians, PAs, NPs, and nurses providing care to HIV+ or at-risk women.

1. The document discusses the role of autopsy in medical education and as a performance measure and quality control tool. It finds that exposure to autopsies for medical students and clinical residents is generally minimal.
2. For pathology residents, most programs require around 50 autopsies but many obstacles exist including lack of dedicated faculty, assessment of competency, and use of forensic cases to meet requirements.
3. Barriers to increased use of autopsy include lack of funding, credibility in clinical practice, champions to promote its value, and modern technologies that could help standardize the process. Wider use in medical research and quality improvement is also needed.

Sectional dentures for microstomia patients.pptxSatvikaPrasad
Microstomia, characterized by an abnormally small oral aperture, presents significant challenges in prosthodontic treatment, including limited access for examination, difficulties in impression making, and challenges with prosthesis insertion and removal. To manage these issues, customized impression techniques using sectional trays and elastomeric materials are employed. Prostheses may be designed in segments or with flexible materials to facilitate handling. Minimally invasive procedures and the use of digital technologies can enhance patient comfort. Education and training for patients on prosthesis care and maintenance are crucial for compliance. Regular follow-up and a multidisciplinary approach, involving collaboration with other specialists, ensure comprehensive care and improved quality of life for microstomia patients.

Here is summary of hypertension -
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a serious medical condition that occurs when blood pressure in the body's arteries is consistently too high. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of blood vessels as the heart pumps it. Hypertension can increase the risk of heart disease, brain disease, kidney disease, and premature death.

End-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) is the level of carbon dioxide that is released at the end of an exhaled breath. ETCO2 levels reflect the adequacy with which carbon dioxide (CO2) is carried in the blood back to the lungs and exhaled.
Non-invasive methods for ETCO2 measurement include capnometry and capnography. Capnometry provides a numerical value for ETCO2. In contrast, capnography delivers a more comprehensive measurement that is displayed in both graphical (waveform) and numerical form.
Sidestream devices can monitor both intubated and non-intubated patients, while mainstream devices are most often limited to intubated patients.
