Office 365 Education brings together various Microsoft tools to help teachers manage their classrooms digitally. It allows teachers to [1] digitally distribute and collect assignments, [2] create shared OneNote notebooks for classes, [3] manage class calendars and information, and [4] have online class discussions. Many of the Office 365 apps like OneDrive, Outlook, and Forms integrate with the tools to automate tasks like adding assignments to student calendars and generating shared documents. The suite also connects to existing school systems to simplify setup and enable single sign-on for teachers and students.

Choosing a blog tool for large student numbers Unisa
The importance of web-logging as a teaching tool has been proven by various studies over the last few years. At the University of South Africa (Unisa) two weblog tools were used during different semesters to assist in teaching a first year programming language. A comparison was made from the learner, the facilitator and the technical viewpoint of these two weblog tools available at Unisa. This paper describes the practical considerations taken and decision-making processes followed when a choice between two web-logging tools was required. The aim is to consider factors that may affect the acceptance and use of weblog tools, and reasons why one works better than another in an Open Distance Learning (ODL) environment, especially for modules having student numbers in excess of three hundred.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Managing the Online Classroom
It all comes down to more engaged students, with new and familiar tools for them to share ideas and assignments, and stay in touch with the teacher for help and feedback.
This new experience lets you get more out of Office 365 Education, and teachers can use their existing content to get up and running. Here are the highlights:
Your homepage for school that has classes set up from a Student Information System and allows you to manage assignment workflow, feedback, and grading.
Each Class Group has assignments, announcements, calendar, Class Notebook, files, and discussion boards.
Class groups are a place where teachers can manage their classes and collaborate with their students. Students can collaborate with their teacher(s), their classmates, and get all the materials to be successful in the class.
Each Class group has a Class Notebook for the entire classroom. Teachers can “peek” into their students’ notebooks to provide real-time feedback on their student’s notes and works. Class Notebook includes assignment distribution to students, quick review of student work and grading. Assignments and grades are reflected in Office 365 or your Learning Management System (LMS).
Offers you web versions of familiar Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote that work in all modern browsers. So, its available everywhere for free with nothing to install. Collaborate with anyone and see what your co-authors type as it’s happening. You can move smoothly from light work and collaboration in Office Online to heavy-duty creation in the Office desktop application—without ever leaving your document or losing your formatting.
It also included new learning tools. Sway is built in for creating content-focused, multi-media project reports and communications like newsletters. Microsoft Forms creates surveys, quizzes, questionnaires, registrations and more.
Integrates with your existing LMS and SIS.
A little detail behind the claims and how it positions with a Learning management system or LMS (FOR REFERENCE ONLY _ DO NOT READ):
The new classroom experience will not be a Learning Management System (LMS), just a new experience integrates directly with your existing LMS or can be used on its own to fit your needs.
Functional classroom option that can be built on with Single Sign On to other apps for learning
Auto-populated and updated class rosters and grades with your existing SIS, like Aspen.
Assignments distributed in OneNote Class Notebooks also show up in Office 365 Education and top Learning Management Systems like Edmodo and Canvas. This continues to leverage OneNote’s benefit of “everything in one place,” so teachers don’t have to continuously jump between applications to get things done in their classroom with Office 365 Education or their LMS. Teachers can now get most instructional tasks done in OneNote.
It all starts with the OneNote Class Notebook, an experience that you won’t find in any other offering than Office 365.
Think of OneNote as the modern replacement for the spiral paper notebook, complete with color coded sections that you can customize, and corresponding pages under each section. Best thing is, you’ll never run out of paper! Each OneNote page is a flexible digital canvas for typing or digital ink – you can even embed images, video and audio files!
Digital ink is gaining traction and we’ve seen twice the number of OneNote users leveraging it this school year in the US – especially relevant as more schools move from paper-based environments to using 1:1 devices in the classroom. And just in education, we have seen triple the number of monthly active OneNote users over the past year.
Listening to teachers is our lifeblood. Teachers tell us how they use OneNote and help us imagine what’s possible for the classroom. In fact, out of this partnership came OneNote Class Notebooks.
Class Notebooks make OneNote the perfect solution for collaborating real time in today’s 21st century, modern classroom. They create a customized classroom experience that provides a framework for teaching and learning.
Each Class Notebook has a central collaboration space for everyone to work within, a content library to store class materials, and an individual student notebook for every student in the class. Teachers can look at their students’ notebooks to provide real-time feedback as well.
Since June 2015, Class Notebooks have taken off, with 400 thousand teachers and 3.5 million students being added to notebooks!

An approach to capture entire school with Class and Staff Notebooks
OneNote as an “Organizational and Collaboration Platform”
Let’s watch a recent case study from Omaha Public Schools where we talk about a new experience that enhances the Class Notebook, Learning Tools, and other instructional capabilities in OneNote with a new experience for teachers and students in Office 365, formerly known as “Class Dashboard”.
Learning Tools is a new toolbar in OneNote that improves reading and writing experiences for all students, including for students with learning differences like dyslexia.
You can even scan content with your phone using Office Lens and it will be OCRed and readable using Learning Tools for OneNote!
A new digital storytelling app from Office that is great for project or problem-based learning. Teachers can create interactive web-based lessons, assignments, project recaps, newsletters, and more—right from a phone, tablet, or browser. Students can collaborate and use Sway to create engaging reports, assignments, projects, study materials, and portfolios. Sways are easy to share with the class or the world and look great on any screen
Sway your ideas in minutes: It’s fun and easy for teachers and students to compose a digital creation they’ll love to share, building confidence and pride. No coding needed…just drag and drop content form different sources.
Combine photos, videos, audio...: Sway transforms your photos, videos, audio, charts, tweets, and more into a polished format and design to share with students, teachers, and parents.
Build great e-portfolios: Say goodbye to stacks of paper. Use Sway to build a digital collection of student work that documents learning progress.

Let’s take a look at the newest member the Office Online suite of web applications that is getting ready to be released for Office 365 Education.
As you can see from that video, the new Office 365 Education experience helps your teachers to have more productive classrooms.
It all comes down to more engaged students, with new and familiar tools for them to share ideas and assignments, and stay in touch with the teacher for help and feedback. Office Online is now complete with a new Office 365 app, Microsoft Forms, that allows anyone to easily and quickly create basic surveys, quizzes, questionnaires, registrations and more. Forms authors can invite others to complete forms via a link. Authors can view results as they are submitted via built-in analytics and data can be easily exported to Excel for additional analysis.
Here is the process for creating and administering a quiz with Microsoft Forms preview…
Today, classroom ‘context’ like the names of classes and which students and teachers are in them are stored in ‘Student Information Systems’. Examples in the US are systems called Powerschool and Infinite Campus.
The challenge many schools and ISVs are facing is there is not an easy way to integrate applications with these information systems.
We see the opportunity to connect existing school systems to Office 365 to automate and simplify set up and single sign on for teachers and students.
School Data Sync, which will be included in Office 365 Education, will mirror user profiles and class rosters from a Student Information System into Office 365. It models classrooms within Office 365 as Groups and Group sites, so teachers can easily manage classes and class materials. Our objective is to:
help teachers save time by automatically creating groups and enabling single sign on to apps in the classroom
help schools and districts save money by working with existing technology investments to reduce the time IT admins spend managing groups, troubleshooting, and auditing security
help ISVs by providing a single, free, platform and API to connect their applications to SIS data
help SIS providers by providing a single, free, platform API to connect to LMS and other classroom apps
Help increase school and student security and privacy by creating a single, secure source for identity and central control over which data gets shared and where.
------
We designed School Data Sync to help the entire education partner ecosystem.
SIS Vendors
SIS vendors will be able to support more apps with integration through a single API, allowing them to more efficiently provide access to classroom data.
ISV’s
Third party applications will be able to use an encrypted connection to access the student data to personalize learning experiences, all at no charge via cloud APIs, and let students enjoy the benefits of sign-on with Office 365.
With School Data Sync, ISVs will be able to deliver SIS independent applications, speeding time to market while reducing support and infrastructure costs.
Security & Privacy
Because security and privacy are so important, School Data Sync will let the district determine which apps can access school and student data and which data gets shared so they can remain in compliance with their policies.
Getting roster data from your SIS into Office 365 and other cloud classroom apps today presents a number of challenges.
Multiple Logins takes away instruction time, can increase helpdesk calls, and create security vulnerabilities
Multiple APIs means writing, testing, and supporting multiple connections to SISs, costing time and money
Keeping student and teacher data secure and private becomes more challenging when so many apps and users need access to the information
School Data Sync with Azure Active Directory and Office 365 helps solve these challenges by:
Providing a single, no cost API to give your application access to data from SIS providers and platforms
Improve the classroom experience of your applications by enabling single sign on and access to other information in the Office graph such as calendar, contacts, etc.
Easier roster creation and integration by creating relationships between Office 365 groups, or Classes, and Azure Active Directory entities such as teachers, students, and schools
Helps increase school and student security and privacy by creating a single, secure source for identity and central control over which data gets shared and where.
Schools do not need to throw out their existing investments and move entirely to the cloud, either, For schools with on-prem AD or hybrid environments, they can use Azure Active Directory Premium (AADP)
Typically each student must log on to each application or service to get access to the application, storage, or status. A teacher could be helping manage quite literally hundreds of logins a day!
ISVs who sell LMS and other classroom software must find a way to connect to each SIS they want to support. This means supporting multiple APIs, costing time at least and in some cases actually money in licensing and support fees.
In addition, schools are demanding a high level of compliance and security (CIPA, FERPA,HIPAA, etc.) that can be difficult to meet when data, identity, and access are spread across multiple applications and users.
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way to:
Enable single sign on so your application “just works” and teachers love it?
Write to a single API and have your application work with all SIS providers and platforms?
Helps your application comply with your customer’s security & privacy policies?
Wouldn’t it be great if this didn’t cost anything?
