This document discusses the benefits and challenges of open educational resources (OER) creation and implementation. The challenges include issues with discoverability of resources, confusion around copyright and licensing permissions, lack of peer review and quality assurance processes, and questions around the sustainability and ongoing costs of creating and maintaining free resources over time. The benefits are the cost savings and affordability for students, the ability to use open pedagogy and move away from traditional textbooks, and the altruistic aspect of providing free educational resources.
