10. In the BBA 4-year structure, in addition to exploring areas of
specialization, we endow students with the ability to analyze

12. BBA students will select a major in April of the first academic year. During
their first year, students will study College core courses as well as a broad
range of Gateway Education courses. The top 20% students (based on
their Year 1 academic performance) will have a free choice of majors in
the College. The other 80% students will enroll in a major of their choice
subject to quota constraint and the criteria as prescribed by the offering
department.
A Major Allocation Exercise will be conducted in April 2016 and a series
of activities will be organized to introduce the major features, career
prospects and co-curricular activities organized by the departments.

Grade Point Averages are indicators of a student’s academic performance.
The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is calculated for all courses
taken in one semester, including failed courses, but excluding courses
graded I, P, IP, S, X or AU. It is weighted by the credit units for each course
taken.
The Cumulative GPA (CGPA) is calculated for all courses taken by the
student during enrolment for a specific programme. It reflects the
student’s performance for all semesters up to the latest term of study.
The computation is the same as the SGPA except that for course repeats,
only the latest attempt is included in the CGPA calculation.

The role of the academic advisor extends beyond course and
programme scheduling. Advisors do not work with students on
course assignments and related course assessments. They provide
advice to students on academic and career planning. Advisors’ major
responsibilities include but are not limited to:

The role of the student mentor differs from that of the academic
advisor. The student mentor helps the student mentee take full
advantage of curricular as well as co-curricular learning and serves
as a role model and mentor. Major responsibilities of student mentors
include but are not limited to:

• Suggestion on the plan of academic progress
• Partial clarification of well-established academic and
institutional policies

Advisee/Mentee
First-year BBA students are not necessarily experienced in making
decisions on academic study and may need advice from academic advisor
and student mentor. Therefore, they are required to:
• Be familiar with University and College environment and
ambience
• Understand and adhere to the academic policies and procedures of
the University and the College of Business
• Clarify their interests and establish realistic educational goals
• Take active part in meetings
• Be open-minded, willing to accept advice and make responsible
decisions
• Follow through and keep up with advice given by advisor and
student mentor(s) after thorough discussions
• Explore the business majors and the requirements of the majors
• Inform the advisor and mentor(s) of any challenges/changes that
may occur in the first year
• Establish a positive relationship with their advisor and mentor(s)
• Take final responsibility for all academic decisions that they make
All students must report to their advisor prior to each semester. Ideally,
students should visit their academic advisors at the beginning, near
the mid-term or after the mid-term (to evaluate the current academic

Young Scholars Programme (YSP) was launched to nurture
outstanding BBA students to become future leaders in the

Eligibility
First-year BBA students with outstanding academic
performance will be invited for application, an information

22. PALSI is a peer-assisted learning scheme using Supplemental
Instruction (SI) model. PALSI aims at enhancing students’
understanding in course materials and improve students’
overall learning and reasoning skills. Regularly scheduled, out-
of-class and peer-facilitated review sessions are open to all
students taking the PALSI courses.
As PALSI is a course-based learning initiative, senior students
who have performed well in the department core courses are
invited to be PALSI Leaders. They meet with junior students
(called PALSI Students) studying in the same course to
discuss academic work and share tips on effective learning
strategies.
