The document provides an overview of operating systems, describing their objectives of convenience, efficiency, and ability to evolve. It discusses the services operating systems provide including program development/execution, I/O access, error handling, accounting, and more. It traces the evolution of operating systems from serial processing to time-sharing and discusses key operating system concepts like processes, memory management, virtual memory, security, and scheduling. Modern techniques like microkernels, multithreading, and distributed systems are also covered at a high level.
NATO enforced a no-fly zone over Libya with support from countries like Qatar, Turkey, and France. As unrest spread to other countries in the region, Western nations considered their responses. Meanwhile, Israel deployed its Iron Dome system in case of attacks from Gaza, and Turkey's prime minister called Syria's president to advise handling protests. Removing Gaddafi from power in Libya proved difficult as his forces halted the rebel advance.
The document discusses and compares GW Bush's Iraq War and Obama's ending of the war. It argues that Bush's war was a huge mistake based on false pretenses that Iraq had WMDs and ties to Al Qaeda. The war cost over 1 million Iraqi lives and thousands of US lives, and ultimately ended American empire due to its immense costs and loss of public support for future wars. While Obama had flaws, getting US troops out of Iraq was the right decision, in contrast to Bush's incompetence and willful ignorance that led to the war.
The document discusses key provisions and effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA or Obamacare). It outlines provisions such as prohibiting denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions, expanding Medicaid eligibility, establishing health insurance exchanges, and requiring individuals to have health insurance coverage or pay a penalty. The effects discussed include more people gaining health insurance coverage through Medicaid expansion or subsidies, but also higher taxes, premiums and deficits. Critics argue it will negatively impact employment and access to doctors while supporters say it ends unfair insurance industry practices.

Lightning Talk #9: How UX and Data Storytelling Can Shape Policy by Mika Aldabaux singapore
How can we take UX and Data Storytelling out of the tech context and use them to change the way government behaves?
Showcasing the truth is the highest goal of data storytelling. Because the design of a chart can affect the interpretation of data in a major way, one must wield visual tools with care and deliberation. Using quantitative facts to evoke an emotional response is best achieved with the combination of UX and data storytelling.
This document summarizes a study of CEO succession events among the largest 100 U.S. corporations between 2005-2015. The study analyzed executives who were passed over for the CEO role ("succession losers") and their subsequent careers. It found that 74% of passed over executives left their companies, with 30% eventually becoming CEOs elsewhere. However, companies led by succession losers saw average stock price declines of 13% over 3 years, compared to gains for companies whose CEO selections remained unchanged. The findings suggest that boards generally identify the most qualified CEO candidates, though differences between internal and external hires complicate comparisons.

Because growing employers are typically focused on the “big stuff,” such as profitability and selling their products and services, they sometimes overlook the seemingly “small stuff,” such as complying with detailed and employee-oriented state and federal labor laws. As growing employers transition to large employers, they often carry with them legacy policies and practices that violate seemingly trivial provisions that nevertheless come with steep penalties that can reach into the millions of dollars. Plaintiffs’ lawyers know this and are targeting growing employers with growing pocketbooks.
Affordable Care Act Reporting - Greatland & Accounting Today WebinarGreatland
By now most businesses and insurance companies are familiar with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), sometimes referred to as ACA or ObamaCare. In 2016 (for reporting on calendar year 2015) employers and insurers are expected to be compliant with ACA reporting requirements.
Understanding all of the rules associated with the Affordable Care Act can be confusing. Janice Krueger, from Greatland helps explain everything you need to know about ACA reporting and filing Form 1095-B or Form 1095-C, and applicable 1094 forms for the 2015 reporting year
Exempt Employee Determinations and Misclassification of WorkersRachel Hamilton
This document summarizes key topics from the 22nd National Forum on Wage & Hour Claims and Class Actions including expected changes to overtime regulations and exemptions. Likely proposals from the Obama administration include increasing the minimum salary level required for exempt employees, limiting non-exempt work to 50% of an employee's time, and modifying duties tests for specific exemptions. Courts are also actively addressing the application of exemptions.
The document provides guidance on wage and hour laws, including proposed changes to overtime exemptions. It discusses how the Department of Labor has proposed raising the minimum salary threshold for exempt employees from $455/week to $970/week. It also proposes automatically updating the threshold annually. The document provides best practices for employers to follow when reclassifying employees between exempt and non-exempt status, such as communicating the change and ensuring any new classification meets legal criteria. Employers are advised to review how the proposed changes could impact their business.
The document summarizes the history and key provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It discusses reforms already implemented like coverage for dependents up to age 26 and prohibiting pre-existing condition exclusions for minors. Future provisions outlined include the employer mandate in 2014, establishment of health insurance exchanges, and definitions of full-time employees for calculating employer penalties. The presentation provides an overview of ACA compliance challenges for employers and how Total HR can help clients navigate ongoing reforms.
The document provides information about the H-2B Temporary Labor Certification Program from the U.S. Department of Labor. It discusses the 2015 regulatory actions which updated the prevailing wage process and standards. It also reviews the standards for employer-provided surveys that can be used to determine prevailing wages if government data is unavailable or limited.
Final regulations recently announced by the Obama Administration give two levels of delay to employers who had previously been required to offer insurance coverage to their employees next year. With this second round of delays, come a second wave of questions from employers.
This week, Attorney Michael James and Rehmann Group’s Don McAnelly addressed key Affordable Care Act regulations and deadlines in a webinar.
The DOL has published its final rules on Exemption and New Overtime Rules which President Obama predicts 4 to 5 million additional workers will be eligible for overtime pay. This webinar will provide insight to the current and new rules and steps an employer will need to take to meet the new rules.

A toxic combination of 15 years of low growth, and four decades of high inequality, has left Britain poorer and falling behind its peers. Productivity growth is weak and public investment is low, while wages today are no higher than they were before the financial crisis. Britain needs a new economic strategy to lift itself out of stagnation.
Scotland is in many ways a microcosm of this challenge. It has become a hub for creative industries, is home to several world-class universities and a thriving community of businesses – strengths that need to be harness and leveraged. But it also has high levels of deprivation, with homelessness reaching a record high and nearly half a million people living in very deep poverty last year. Scotland won’t be truly thriving unless it finds ways to ensure that all its inhabitants benefit from growth and investment. This is the central challenge facing policy makers both in Holyrood and Westminster.
What should a new national economic strategy for Scotland include? What would the pursuit of stronger economic growth mean for local, national and UK-wide policy makers? How will economic change affect the jobs we do, the places we live and the businesses we work for? And what are the prospects for cities like Glasgow, and nations like Scotland, in rising to these challenges?

In a tight labour market, job-seekers gain bargaining power and leverage it into greater job quality—at least, that’s the conventional wisdom.
Michael, LMIC Economist, presented findings that reveal a weakened relationship between labour market tightness and job quality indicators following the pandemic. Labour market tightness coincided with growth in real wages for only a portion of workers: those in low-wage jobs requiring little education. Several factors—including labour market composition, worker and employer behaviour, and labour market practices—have contributed to the absence of worker benefits. These will be investigated further in future work.
