The Christian journey involves growing deeper in knowledge of God through daily conversations with Him in prayer, as the Bible instructs. Christians are called to follow the one true path of Christ, not choose their own path. The spiritual journey of Christians progresses from being infants fed milk to becoming mature followers able to feed others. It is a lifelong process of purification and growing in holiness through obedience to God's word, not empty chanting, in order to find the narrow path that leads to eternal life.
Paul's passion
Paul had a passion for the spiritual development and growth of believers. He prayed constantly for believers, asking God to strengthen them internally and help them know Christ more deeply through faith. Paul wanted believers to progress spiritually through love, discernment, excellence, integrity, and doing good works so that God may be glorified in their lives through the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Walk the talk - Battle for Holiness
Peter wrote this letter to believers in Asia Minor who were experiencing trials. He encourages them to have hope through God's grace and to pursue holiness. To do so, they must prepare their minds (gird up their loins of mind), be self-controlled, and set their hope fully on the grace that will be given through Jesus Christ. They are called to be holy as God is holy, which means being set apart and different. The pursuit of holiness begins in the mind and is motivated by and empowered by God's grace, not legalism or the idea that grace removes the need for holiness.

Jesus showed how to treat people with dignity and respect by finding receptive hearts like the Samaritans, speaking words of congratulations, emphasizing the positive in others, accepting all people as Christ accepts us, and teaching the truth with gentleness and love. We can develop a winning attitude when preaching the gospel by following Jesus' example in how he interacted with others in a kind, loving, and non-judgmental way.
Total Evangelism

The third study in our "Growing Deep in the Gospel" series. In this study we answer the question "What isn't the Gospel?" by looking at false gospels, the difference between religion and the gospel and three ways to live: be your own god, make yourself right with God and trust Jesus.
Grace
Grace from God can be abused in several ways according to the document. Some abuse grace by using it as an excuse to continue sinning, believing that grace allows them to disobey God. Jesus refers to being "poor in spirit" in the Beatitudes as being humble and lacking spiritual pride or arrogance before God. To be poor in spirit means recognizing one's own spiritual emptiness, sinfulness, and bankruptcy before a holy God. It acknowledges that we have nothing of worth to offer God and are completely destitute spiritually. Being poor in spirit results in the kingdom of heaven, or salvation, because only those who recognize their utter spiritual poverty can receive the free gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

- 5. "cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline. Communion without confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ." Dietrich Bonhoeffer
- 6. "costly grace confronts us as a gracious call to follow Jesus, it comes as a word of forgiveness to the broken spirit and the contrite heart. It is costly because it compels a man to submit to the yoke of Christ and follow him; it is grace because Jesus says: "My yoke is easy and my burden is light." Dietrich Bonhoeffer
- 7. DOUBLE STANDARDS MAXIMUM AND MINIMUM STANDARDS
- 9. But all the time, within the church, there had been a living protest against this process: the monastic movement. This served as a "monasticism was represented as an individual achievement which the mass of the laity could not be expected to emulate"; the commandments of Jesus were limited to "a restricted group of specialists" and a double standard arose:
- 11. "a maximum and a minimum standard of church obedience." Why was this dangerous? Bonhoeffer points out that whenever the church was accused of being too worldly, it could always point to monasticism as "the opportunity of a higher standard within the fold - and thus justify the other possibility of a lower standard for others." So the monastic movement, instead of serving as a pointer for all Christians, became a justification for the status quo.
- 13. "The price we are having to pay today in the shape of the collapse of the organized church is only the inevitable consequence of our policy of making grace available to all at too low a cost. We gave away the word and sacraments wholesale, we baptized, confirmed, and absolved a whole nation without condition. Our humanitarian sentiment made us give that which was holy to the scornful and unbelieving... But the call to follow Jesus in the narrow way was hardly ever heard." Dietrich Bonhoeffer

- 29. It means a loud cry… it expresses deep emotion… What then does it imply? Obviously… real knowledge of God. God is no longer to us a distant God. He is not merely a God in whom we believe intellectually, theologically, theoretically, doctrinally only. All this is possible to one who is not a child of God at all… [Our] worship and praying are spontaneous; it is the spontaneity of the child who sees the father… and not only spontaneity, but confidence.
