The document summarizes the issue of nursing shortages, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs). It discusses how demand for healthcare has increased, creating staffing shortages. Shortages are also due to lack of nursing school faculty and limited enrollment. ICU nursing is described as stressful and demanding, with long hours and complex technology. Shortages in ICUs can negatively impact patient safety and outcomes. Potential solutions proposed include increasing nurses' wages and improving nursing's public image to attract more people to the profession.

Critical Research Appraisal Assignment
Nursing research uncovers new knowledge to help build the foundation of clinical practice. Research can help prevent diseases and disabilities, help manage symptoms, establish new treatment plans and improve nursing skills. This is why nurses need to be able to participate in and analyze research, as this can bring positive outcomes to their careers and the health of their patients. There are two different types of research, quantitative and qualitative, that provide information and data. For this assignment, I chose one qualitative research that focuses on the stress and burnout experienced by nursing professionals and one quantitative analysis that explores nurses’ knowledge regarding hand hygiene. Each study will be evaluated thoroughly and analyzed.
Qualitative Research
The definition of qualitative research can be challenging. Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences (Morgan et al., 2021). This form of research explores deeper insights into real-world problems in an emergent and holistic way. Qualitative data can be collected using various methods such as interviews, focus groups, observations, and documentation analysis (Hoover, 2021). Qualitative research has been used in nursing for many years, but it was not the first method used in nursing. Before quantitative research, philosophical methods such as hermeneutics and phenomenology were the only options for professional inquiry (Butts & Rich, 2017). However, it was changed to qualitative research because its ways were incompatible with science. There are three major approaches to qualitative research, (1) ethnography, based on anthropology, (2) phenomenology, drawn from philosophy; and (3) grounded theory, drawn from sociology (Morgan et al., 2021). The use of qualitative studies is common due to its many strengths, such as providing multiple methods of data collection, more detailed information, and how it can refine and strengthen quantitative research. However, some of the limitations of this form of research are difficulty analyzing and collecting data while being more time-consuming.
Evaluating and Analyzing a Selected Qualitative Study
For the example of the qualitative study, I chose Luis M. Dos Santos's study, which focused on the effects of stress, burnout, and low self-efficacy in nursing professionals. The quantitative research aimed to understand and explore how social and environmental factors influence nursing professionals’ self-efficacy. In the study, the Social Cognitive Theory was used to define how each subject was affected based on their thoughts, behaviors, feeling, and personal beliefs (Dos Santos, 2020). For this research study, the phenomenological approach and analysis were used thought the survey to collec ...

Creating a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence-based practice (EBP) in its most simplistic form is using the evidence, whether from clinical experiences or patient preferences, to make decisions that affect patient care positively (Polit & Beck, 2017). Evidence-based practice is essential for determining changes in practice that are needed to protect and provide safe care for patients. Nurses are the front-line of the healthcare system and are able to recognize and change policies and procedures. Therefore, nurses are responsible for sharing with their peers and co-workers the information obtained from their evidence-based research.
In order to make evidence-based changes, a dissemination plan needs to be in place. In our facility, our evidence-based practice nurse committee is responsible for teaching the staff on changes in practice. Once they have decided on the changes they present the information to the Emergency Department leadership. From there the changes are reported to the nursing staff through department meetings, bulletin boards, and online learning modules. This is based on the ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation which seeks to take research findings and use them to impact patient outcomes by using evidence-based care (Polit & Beck, 2017).
“Often in the dissemination phase, there are considerable barriers that exist. These barriers consist of prejudice toward findings, lack of approval from leadership, nurses attitudes, and the resources needed to make changes. Moore & Tierney (2019) found,
“an overarching theme of disconnection between research and evidence and the participants’ perceptions of contemporary nursing practice was underpinned by three themes:
1) We should be using it… but we’re not.
2) Employees suggested that research involvement was something left after graduation and no longer part of their day-to-day roles.
3) Research is other people’s business (p. 90).
In another report, it was suggested that evidence-based practice is challenging for nurses because of the pressures of a patient satisfaction culture and time constraints when caring for patients (Henderson & Fletcher, 2015). These barriers can only be overcome if nursing leadership has the courage to address them and help nurses see the positive benefits of evidence-based practice.
A culture of change is vital to making a significant improvement in the lives of patients. At this time nursing researchers are limited by a non-existent research culture leaving them nurses with the responsibility to develop that culture (Berthelsen & Holge-Hazelton, 2018). Creating an awareness of the research that is taking place by their peers removes the barriers of feeling not competent to participate. As nursing leadership, our role is to build a culture that creates curiosity and critical reflection ab.

As a nursing practitioner, the major roles include the assessment of the needs of the patients. A nursing practitioner also orders and interprets test from laboratories, they do illness and disease diagnosis, medication prescription and formulate plans for treatment. There are a number of challenges that face the nurse in their field of practices. This paper will focus to discuss the hazards in the workspace of these practitioners. It will also seek to find a way of solving these challenge using innovative means.
The Problem of Interest
Hazard in The Nursing Field.
The nursing field of practice is one of the most dangerous places of working as one does work in a delicate environment where one is in the risks of being infected or even injuring oneself. Nurses are faced with a number of risks in daily job activities. Some of these hazards include injuries, flu germs, hand washing –related dermatitis and pathogens that are based in the blood among others.
According to the report produced by OSHA, about 5.6 million of 12.2 million workers are under the risk of being exposed to blood borne pathogens. This is a big number of health workers under the risk meaning that soon there will be a shortage of health nursing or health workers in general. Moreover, the rates of risks are higher in the health care industry than any other industries. This industry has registered around 35000 injuries covering different parts of the body. These range from the shoulders, hands, feet, and back. These statistics are according to the Bureau Labor Statistics (Gooch, 2015).
Apart from the acute injuries discussed, they also suffer harm exposed on their hands. From a recent study carried out in the University of Manchester, the health workers that follow protocols are 4.5 times exposed to skin damage risks. The report also reported up to 25 percent of cases of irritant contact dermatitis.
These individuals also get exposed to infectious diseases in their areas of practice. One of the most commonly contacted infection is Hepatitis B (HBV). This is infection can be contacted via blood contact, feces, saliva, and semen. This instrument of spreading the infection is in contact with the patient and also the needles (Gooch, 2015). Nursing practitioners also risk exposure to toxic substances in the clinical environment. Radiation is another risk that comes majorly from the ionizing radiation. Complications associated with radiation include skin cancer, leukemia, and cancer among others. One comes to contact with this radiation in the instances of performing x-ray scans. Another challenge that faces nursing.

Improving practice through evidence not only helps lower healthcare costs, improve healthcare outcomes and patient safety, but it also helps to increase job satisfaction for medical professionals (Kim, et al, 2016). Disseminating information about widely cited evidence-based practices is an important part of moving our healthcare system forward. According to Melnyk (2012), it often takes several years for the results of research to be put into practice and actually affect patient care.
The first strategy that I would utilize to disseminate EBP information would be unit-level education. I would initially provide an in-service to provide education about the EBP that would be beneficial to our unit. I would also utilize a second strategy of unit posters as well as a unit-based champion to help reinforce the positive results of the EBP. Barriers to this types of information being learned and then used in practice would be each persons willingness to learn something new and change the way they may be used to doing something. I would combat this by starting out the presentation with information about evidence-based practice as well as provide a fact-sheet about the evidence in the research that is being presented. Another way I would combat this would be to lead by example and try to demonstrate the EBP in every day practice. Melnyk et al (2011) stated that in order “for clinicians to change their practices to be evidence based, both their beliefs about the value of EBP and their confid.

Discuss how the quantitative and qualitative data would complement one another and add strength to the study.
Evidently, the use of EBP in healthcare mostly relies on the available qualitative and quantitative data which is supported by scientific or clinical research. In studying the EBP, quantitative data is used to enhance qualitative information and vice versa, because one method complements the other one (Tappen, 2015, p.88). For example, in the selected article the EBP about beliefs and behaviors of nurses showed that the number of the nurses who were certified vs. nurses who were not certified explained why some of the nurses have higher perceived EBP implementation than others (Eaton, Meins, Mitchell, Voss, & Doorenbos, 2015, “Evidence-Based Practice Beliefs and Behaviors”). Quantitative data would improve the study by providing evidence in the form of numbers or amounts such as the scores which show the proficiency of nurses in different areas (Eaton, Meins, Mitchell, Voss, & Doorenbos, 2015, “Evidence-Based Practice Beliefs and Behaviors”). Quantitative data could strengthen the study by providing more detailed information about EBP implementation which will explain certain trends and occurrences as found in the research.

The qualitative research is exploratory/ descriptive and emphasizes the importance of subjects frame to be referenced and the context of the study. The research will be more concerned with the truth perceived by informants and less concerned with the truth of the objectives. The information from this research will be important in understanding the informants’ behaviors in details. The description of this approach will be used to get the picture and the opinion of nursing caregivers on the use of CNS depressants by the elderly (Susan, Nancy, & Jennifer, 2013).
The method that is used is explorative/descriptive. The strengths of the descriptive method are: effective to analyze non-quantified subjects and issues, the possibility to observe the phenomenon in a natural environment, the opportunity to use qualitative and quantitative method together, and less time consuming than quantitative studies. In the case of exploratory studies, the principal advantage is the flexibility and adaptability to change and it is effective in laying the groundwork that guides to future research. We can find disadvantages in this kind of studies. For example, descriptive studies cannot test or verify the research problem statically, the majority of descriptive studies are not repeatable due to their observational nature, and they are not helpful in identifying cause behind the described phenomenon. Another weak point, that includes exploratory research, is the interpretation of information is subject to bias. These type of studies make use a modest number of samples that may not represent the target population and they are not usually helpful in decision ma.
Common Models in Health Informatics EvaluationHave you ever watche.docxbartholomeocoombs
Common Models in Health Informatics Evaluation
Have you ever watched a movie in which the same scene was shown several times but as viewed by different individuals? Or, have you watched a detective show in which the witnesses all had differing accounts? The same can hold true for conducting an evaluation of a health information technology project. How you plan and conduct the evaluation is largely dependent on the viewpoint you assume and the perspective with which you approach the evaluation.
Consider a new patient discharge protocol at a small hospital. Do you want to know how the patient feels about the process? Do you want to gather the opinions of nurses who are using this process? Perhaps you want to determine if it is saving the hospital money by freeing up bed space in a more timely fashion. Obtaining each of these viewpoints would require a different approach. Depending on the goal of your evaluation, the model and viewpoint you opt to use will likely vary.
In this Discussion, determine which evaluation model would be most effective for evaluating the health information technology described in one of the scenarios below. Your Instructor will assign a specific scenario by Day 1 of this week.
Scenario 1:
You have recently provided a training program to help nurses and physicians become proficient in the use of a new bedside medication verification (BMV) system.
Scenario 2:
The Chief Medical Officer at your hospital is interested in finding out the impact of a new decision support system on the number of adverse events occurring in the past year.
Scenario 3:
You are helping with the design of a new outpatient surgery center to be built adjacent to the hospital. You are tasked with evaluating the opinions of physicians, nurses, and the general public toward this facility.
To prepare:
Review the information on the types of evaluation models covered in this week’s Learning Resources.
Determine which model would be most appropriate to use for evaluation in the scenario to which you were assigned.
Consider why the viewpoint of the scenario or situation would impact the model used.

Introduction
Nursing just like any profession faces numerous challenges daily. Nurses are usually tasked with the duty to ensure that they work diligently and professionally to ensure that their clients are satisfied with the services that they deliver. They are usually tasked with the duty to ensure that the patients that visit their premises get quality services that they deserve. However, these services come at a cost; they face a myriad of challenges that they have to work fully despite these challenges to satisfy their clients. Therefore, this research paper analysis some of the problems that nurses face in the daily execution of their duties.
Identification of the Problem
Nurse faces a myriad of challenges in their daily execution of duties. To ensure that they discharge their duties perfectly all these challenges must be identified and effective measures are put in place to ensure that the challenges are taken care of. The major problems that most of the medical facilities are the issue of understaffing. Nurses have faced challenges in terms of duties assigned to them in comparison to their numbers. Studies conducted have also portrayed that there are shortages of nurses in the medical facilities. However, the challenges that these nurses face are varied in different nations and towns, there are those nations that have surplus while there are those towns and nations that have a high shortage of these important service providers in the healthcare facilities.
The impact of these shortages has also resulted in further challenges for the nurses. In this regard, one of the major challenges that these nurses face is the need to work for long hours due to the shortage of employees at the medical facilities. The few available nurses must work in shifts and endure long working hours to ensure that they meet the desired goals of the institution are met. The work of nurses calls for one to be sober and cognitive in decision making (McLelland et al. 2015). However, with a situation where nurses are required to work for long hours, work in shifts such that they can sleep for a while and resume their duties. This is a worrying trend for the nurses because their cognitive ability and judgment as normal human beings are likely to decline when overworked. Therefore, the chances of making poor decisions are also likely to increase with time as they work overtime.
Besides that, the shortages of nurses in healthcare facilities which calls for overworking of these nurses to ensure that patients are fully taken care of, usually lead to an increase in hazard and dangerous accidents taking place.

In nursing, evidence-based practice (EBP) is a blend of research f.docxsleeperharwell
In nursing, evidence-based practice (EBP) is a blend of research findings, clinical skills, and patient choices (Skaggs et al., 2018). In clinical practice, nurses are pushed to adopt this problem-solving strategy to deliver individualized patient care. EBP includes information on evidence-based practices in practically all areas of nursing, such as direct patient care, workflow concerns, infection control, supply management, charting, and central line care, to name a few. EBP enables nurses to utilize the most recent research methods in real-world settings, such as direct patient care. With the nurse's extensive knowledge and data on quality improvement, potential improvements to current processes that may result in better outcomes can be considered. EBP can improve patient care by focusing on known results. In a fast-paced industry like healthcare, it is crucial to remain current with the most recent research methodology.
Journals subject to peer review are one of the most reliable sources of evidence-based research. In reality, peer-reviewed publications are the most reputable source of study findings. They are the settings where researchers evaluate the efficacy of drugs, therapies, and behaviors and publish their findings (Schmidt & Brown, 2017). Peer-reviewed sources are those that have been evaluated for quality by experts and professionals in accordance with industry standards. Unlike many websites, peer-reviewed materials are examined prior to publication. This shows that the library's collections are a more reliable source of information than the Internet. PubMed and CINAHL are two important evidence-based research tools. PubMed is a database of articles and papers covering a broad spectrum of biological and clinical research. Evidence-Based Practice is an advanced search option in CINAHL that restricts search results to articles from evidence-based journals, articles about evidence-based practice, articles about applying evidence-based practice to research, and research articles, including systematic reviews, clinical trials, and meta-analyses.

Evidence-based practice illustrates the difference between on-the-job experience and research-based assessment and interventions that are done daily. The importance of EBP will stop healthcare professionals from providing care that is ritualistic and traditional. EBP can also determine the efficacy of the care provided and evaluate the care to ensure positive patient outcomes (Tappen,.R.M. 2015). One of the worst mindsets to have is “that is how we have.

Reply to 2 peers and provide them each with a potential or actual study using a mixed method design to address their practice challenge. Be sure to provide citations.
For week 2, you will add the following content to your formal literature synthesis based on the practice challenge you described last week.
1. Define problem statement, hypothesis, and PICOT statement. Cite resources
A problem statement is developed by the researcher and identifies a potential problem that is relevant to practice. A hypothesis is a fundamental explanation based on limited data and observation that serves as a foundational starting point with which to proceed with further investigation. PICOT stands for Population (P), Intervention (I), Comparison (C), Outcome (O) and Time-frame (T) of intervention. A PICOT statement is a reliable "formula" for producing answerable, researchable questions (Polit & Beck, 2017).
2. Develop a problem statement, potential hypothesis, and potential PICOT statement based on your practice challenge.
Nursing staff shortages impact patient care as well as the nurses who provide the patient care. Nurse staffing needs vary depending on acuity, day or night shift, procedures, and any number of unforeseen events. Short staffing jeopardizes not only the patients but the license and health of the nurses as well. A potential hypothesis regarding this topic may be that if nursing staffing was improved, the occurrence error related patient incidences. The population affected in this PICOT statement is the patients. The intervention in this PICOT statement is that the nursing staffing levels can be increased to alleviate the shortages. The comparison will be a hospital that remains at lower staffing levels. The outcome will be the number of nurse retention compared in both hospitals. The comparison time will be one year.
3. Identify potential (ones you make up) or actual studies using 2 different methodologies (qualitative and quantitative). Be sure to provide citations.
A qualitative study that evaluates the patient effects of nurse short staffing is study performed by Clark, P. A., Leddy, K., Drain, M., & Kaldenberg, D. “state nursing shortages and patient satisfaction: more RNs—better patient experiences” (2007). In this study, the do a qualitative analysis on the quality of patients care and the correlation between adequate nursing staffing.
A quantitative study that evaluates the patient effects of nurse short staffing is “nurse staffing and patient outcomes: a longitudinal study on trend and seasonality by He, J., Staggs, V. S., Bergquist-Beringer, S., & Dunton, N. (2016). In this study He performed a longitudinal study based off quarterly unit-level nursing data in 2004–2012 were extracted from the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI).

Descriptive
research
is a study designed to depict the participants in an accurate way. More simply put, descriptive analysis is all about describing people who take part in the survey.
There are three ways a researcher can go about doing a descriptive research project, and they are:
Observational, defined as a method of viewing and recording the participants
Case study, defined as an in-depth study of an individual or group of individuals
Survey, defined as a brief interview or discussion with an individual about a specific topic
Mixed
methods
research
(Extracted from the article below) is the use of quantitative and qualitative methods in a single study or series of studies. It is a new methodology that is increasingly used by health researchers, especially within health services research. There is a growing literature on the theory, design, and critical appraisal of mixed methods research. However, few papers summarize this methodological approach for health practitioners who wish to conduct or critically engage with mixed methods studies.

Meta-Analysis
Meta
-
analysis
is a statistical technique for combining data from multiple studies on a particular topic. A Meta-analysis is an analytical tool for estimating the mean and variance of underlying population effects from a collection of empirical studies addressing ostensibly the same research question. Meta‐analysis has become an increasingly popular and valuable tool in psychological research, and significant review articles typically employ these methods.
Article: Meta-Analysis in Medical Research
Epidemiology
According to the Centers for Disease Control,
Epidemiology
is the method used to find the causes of health outcomes and diseases in populations. In epidemiology, the patient is the community and individuals are viewed collectively. By definition, epidemiology is the study (scientific, systematic, and data-driven) of the distribution (frequency, pattern) and determinants (causes, risk factors) of health-related states and events (not just diseases) in specified populations (neighborhood, school, city, state, country, global).
Article: Epidemiology is a Science of High Importance
Longitudinal Studies
Longitudinal Study, an epidemiologic study that follows a population forward over time, evaluating the effects of one or more variables on a process. If individuals are followed, it is termed a longitudinal cohort study. If classes—e.g., age classes—are studied, it is a longitudinal cross-sectional study. Longitudinal studies are the converse (opposite) of horizontal (parallel) studies.

Working in the Emergency Room has its challenges; one of those challenges is not having
enough supplies. This could be from multiple patients with the same complaint, overuse of
product, or supply chain shortages in receiving the product. Due to the 2020 pandemic, there
have been disruptions in supply chain distribution. Healthcare is being directly affected; as
stated by Reed (2021), “Shortage of health care supplies can quickly jump from a nuisance to a
life-or-death proposition. They indicate serious vulnerabilities in the U.S. health care supply
chain.” The supply chain issue has forced healthcare workers to be innovators, thinking smarter,

2- rosquete

View the scenario from a different viewpoint, and consider how a different model might be used.
Reflect on the importance of basing an evaluation on a model.

Reply to 2 peers and provide them each with a potential or actual .docxsodhi3

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Assignment: Locating an Empirical Research Article
Empirical research articles document a study that is either
quantitative, qualitative or a mixed methods research design.
When authors write an empirical research article they typically
follow a format that looks like this: Introduction/Background,
Literature Review, Methodology, Findings, and Discussion. The
authors recount literature on their specific research topic and
describe in a systematic manner how the data was collected and
then analyzed in order to answer the research question(s). Once
the data is analyzed, they present the findings. Finally, they
interpret the findings using past literature to help understand
the findings.
What we broadly describe as a “quantitative study” includes
numerical summaries that involve descriptive statistics
(averages, standard deviations), correlations, and inferential
statistics (such as T-tests, Chi Squares and other kinds of
analyses). These kinds of studies can include certain elements
such as per- and post-tests or survey results looking at
correlations between variables.
Qualitative articles, on the other hand, use interviews, focus
groups, observations, and written answers to questions. Rather
than using statistics to summarize the study, these studies look
at themes and present the material using words, phrases and
often paragraphs to illustrate what they are representing.
To prepare for this assignment, review Week 1’s readings and
resources on how to locate an empirical research article using
the library’s databases.
For this Assignment,
· Locate an empirical research article that is either a
quantitative or qualitative study from a peer reviewed social
work journal for the final assignment.
4. · Do not select an empirical research article that describes a
mixed methods study. The reason is because a mixed method
study involves both a quantitative and qualitative component.
You would have to do two reviews – one for the quantitative
component and one for the qualitative component -- for the final
assignment.
· Upload the article. Your instructor will review the article to
make sure it is an empirical research article and will approve it
for your use for the final assignment.
Assignment that was done by you that go along with the
assignment above
Although evidence based research plays a vital role in social
work practice, it is important that it is combined with other
professional skills and experience. Social work practice occurs
under circumstances where information may be incomplete and
conflicting and for various reasons, this may lead to biases in
the decision-making process.
To assist with decision-making, social workers use instruments.
The two most common instruments used in social work practice
are consensus instruments (which are flexible and rely upon the
practitioner's experience in the field) and actuarial instruments
(which adopt a numerical approach and focus upon
static/historical factors) (Mutschler, 1984). Items in actuarial
5. instruments are identified from larger studies or meta-analyses
that have an empirical relationship with a particular outcome.
Items in consensus instruments are derived from professional
opinion.
Many parallels can be identified between cognitive theory and
the development of instruments. Historically, it was believed
that there are two different forms of cognition: intuitive and
analytical. Today, we have a much more sophisticated level
of understanding which is based upon the complementary nature
of these forms of cognition and to a certain extent, their
interdependence.
Consequently, we must develop and use instruments that reflect
this understanding. Specifically, the area of violence prediction
in the forensic field has been adopting a combined approach for
over one decade, with excellent results. Structured
Professional Judgement, (SPJ) is now the gold standard. SPJ
combines evidence based research and professional judgement,
a process that allows practitioners to reflect upon the
meaningfulness of a particular risk level (that is determined by
the evidence based research), given the context of the individual
case which is being assessed and, we may disagree whether the
intervention model of evidence based research in medicine
works for social work. But I am guessing that what is missing is
a clear idea about how to do evidence summaries/synthesis of
qualitative research, which is perhaps the better way to evaluate
practices in social work. Until we work that out, we probably
will have to make due with the quantitative
'randomised controlled studies' synthesis. But, frankly, what is
an argument going to look like that says we shouldn't base our
practices (in whatever field), on the best evidence available?
One of the key conclusions is the importance of 'evidence-led
practice', the importance of both having 'evidence' but also
having a healthy critical view of same. The bottom line is that
there is no substitute for the qualified, professional, human
decision maker in social work practice. But this individual must
always be at least informed by evidence but not dictated by it.

Nursing Shortage
Demand for improved healthcare services has increased
tremendously over the years thereby creating a shortage for
nurses to take care of the patients. The primary obstacle facing
healthcare industry is constant changes in demography which
has in turn pushed for an expansion of the working force and
the period required to train new nurses (Bucha, Duffield &
Jordan, 2015). Shortage of nurses has also brought up
challenging values to the industry making most of the
practitioners to ask themselves if they can take care of their
patients when they are not enough in number. Perhaps, the
primary reason for nurse’s shortage is the inability of schools
enrolment of new students because of lack of nursing school
faculties (Nardi, & Gyurko, 2013).
Setting
9. In intensive care units (ICUs) most nurses are exposed to a lot
of stress. According to Rosseter (2012) primary reason for
nurse’s turnover in intensive care units is their inability to
counter stress associated with working in the department. On
top of that, the long hours and the amount of stress also reduce
nurse’s cognitive skills. World Health Organization, for
instance, has given several detailed reports regarding nurse
shortages in ICUs of several countries around the globe
(Stoddart & Evans, 2017). The report goes further to show that
staff levels and the working conditions have been the primary
reasons for nursing shortages in ICUs.
Description
Intensive care unit department requires nurses to work for long
hours; it is noisy and hectic since it bombards people with all
different kinds of stimuli. Nursing in ICU is described as
demanding since most of the activities is high risk since
patients are often very sick and fighting for their lives (Urden,
Stacy, & Lough, 2017). Advancement in technology has
escalated the problem because it expects nurses to work very
fast to help the ill by using hugely complex machines. This
working setup has made most nurses dissatisfied and stressed
thus making some resign or discourage other potential future
nurses.
Impact
Nurses working in ICUs work for very long hours and in
stressful conditions which can make them easily suffer from
injuries or fatigue. In such scenarios, they are prone to making
mistakes which can quickly lead to a patient in critical
condition losing their lives or reduce the quality of medical
care. In other words, a single error in an ICU can cause
alarmingly increase mortality rates in a country that has
shortages of nurses in that crucial department (Sawatzky, Enns
& Legare, 2015). It is imperative also to note that these
uncertain working environments in ICUs promote individualism
while at the same time reduce any chances of solidarity and
formations of working groups. Nurses may, therefore, feel
10. incompetent in their work making them disengage from what
they are supposed to do.
Significance
Nurses are vital in every health organization especially when
providing quality health care and educating patients about their
health. Nurses mostly spend a lot of time with patients during
their healing process hence creating some personal relationships
along the way. When considering mood and attitude required
during the healing process, nurses become even more important
since they are trained to persevere and take good care of the
ailing patients (Oulton, 2010). Their shortage is, therefore, a
global concern that should be addressed in every health
organization.
Solution
Solving nurse shortages in ICUs requires innovative and long-
term remedies that can solve the problem once and for all. One
such solution is increased wages for nurses to compensate them
for working long and stressful hours (Bryant, 2017). Another
solution is to improve nursing images by encouraging the
already available nurses to freely communicate with the press
about the benefits of nursing to a society. A good image can
help in promoting the profession by encouraging others to join
the industry.
