The University of Botswana library uses handheld scanners to capture in-house usage statistics by faculty teams shelving books each day. This allows them to identify frequently used items, determine staff workload, and assess book use to inform collection decisions. However, the scanning process is time-consuming and data is not always downloaded and analyzed promptly. Recommendations include printing barcodes instead of handwriting them, employing full-time shelvers, and having each assistant librarian download and analyze their own scanner data.
