HORMONAL CONTROL OF
THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM
PRESENTER: ONTLAMETSE
BASIMANE
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
AT THE END OF THE LESSON YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:
 DISCUSS HORMONES INVOLVED IN MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
 DISCUSS VARIOUS ANDROGENS
 EXPLAIN HORMONAL CONTROL OF THE TESTES (NEGATIVE FEEDBACK
MECHANISM)
INTRODUCTION VIDEO
HORMONES INVOLVED IN THE MALE
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM?
 WHAT ARE HORMONES ACCORDING TO THE VIDEO???
 Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH)
o It is the hormone that stimulates the release of FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary
 Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
o It is the hormone that stimulates the Sertoli cells to nourish the developing sperm cells
with nutrients during spermatogenesis
o The Sertoli cells are located inside the seminiferous tubules in the germinal epithelial cells
of the testes
 Luitenising Hormone (LH)
o It is the hormone that stimulates Leydig cells to secrete androgens
o Leydig cells are located inside the testes adjacent to seminiferous tubules
WHAT ARE ANDROGENS?
o Androgens are group of sex hormones in both males and females which help these
genders to enter puberty and mature physically
EXAMPLES OF ANDROGENS
 Androstenedione
 Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
 DHEA sulphate (DHEA-S)
 Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
 TESTOSTERONE
FUNCTIONS OF ANDROGENS IN MALES
1. Make males to have deep voice (Vocal cord lengthening)
2. Hair growth on the face, scalp, chest, underarms and genitals
3. Sperm development
4. WHAT ABOUT FEMALES????
TESTOSTERONE IN FEMALES
