legislation documents that a
school must consider.
3. A variety of time-out strategies
such as isolation in the student’s
own classroom, a time-out in
another teacher’s classroom or
with a member of the executive
staff and the use of a dedicated
time-out room are discussed.
These strategies are used
proactively to assist students to
calm down during times of high

and to prevent a situation from
escalating to the point where a
student may harm themselves or
others.
4. This document addresses the
right of a principal to remove a
student from school for a period
of time or completely following
unacceptable behaviour.
5. This document outlines the
informations power (a school’s
right to obtain information about
a student who constitutes a risk)
and the directions power (the
Director General of DET (now
DEC) has the right to direct a
student whose violent behaviour
poses a risk to attend a school
that can safely manage that
risk).
6. This document outlines the
steps schools can take to
implement a policy regarding
bullying; from embedding an
anti-bullying culture at the
school, through to early
intervention and responding to
incidents of bullying.
7. This document addresses the
roles of parents, principals and
school staff in ensuring students
attend school. It also includes
resources for supporting
students to attend school
regularly.
8. This document outlines specific
strategies schools can use to
address both direct and indirect
racism in schools. A separate
Anti-racism policy document
exists, but this support
document is filled with practical
steps that can be implemented
by schools and teachers.
