warming pollution: a process known as carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery
(CO2-EOR). According to industry research CO2-EOR would give America
access to large, domestic oil resources—potentially more than four times the
proven U.S. reserves, or up to 10 full years of our total national consumption.
But without the stimulus of climate protection legislation, CO2 for oil
recovery is likely to remain in short supply and most of this domestic oil
resource will stay in the ground.

CO2-EOR Taps Stranded Domestic Oil Resources

  • 1. Energy Facts Tapping into Stranded Domestic Oil: Enhanced Oil Recovery with Carbon Dioxide Is a Win-Win-Win Americans are demanding measures that will relieve the pain they are feeling at the pump today. The country has a significant, untapped win-win-win opportunity to stimulate our economy and reduce our dependence on imported oil while actually helping to protect wild places and reduce global warming pollution: a process known as carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR). According to industry research CO2-EOR would give America access to large, domestic oil resources—potentially more than four times the proven U.S. reserves, or up to 10 full years of our total national consumption. But without the stimulus of climate protection legislation, CO2 for oil recovery is likely to remain in short supply and most of this domestic oil resource will stay in the ground. For more information, CO2-EOR Can Produce More “Stranded oil” is oil that is left in the reservoir please contact Oil Right Now after conventional recovery techniques have George Peridas at been completed. Injecting CO2 mobilizes the Enhanced oil recovery using carbon dioxide offers (415) 875-6181. an immediate- to medium-term opportunity to stranded oil, driving it to the wellbore and making produce more oil right here at home, from mature it recoverable. And in the EOR process, and gas industry research and consulting firm large quantities of CO2 from industrial sources can Advanced Resources International.1 As much as www.nrdc.org/policy be sequestered underground rather than emitted 45 billion barrels of “stranded oil” from just over July 2008 to the atmosphere, reducing global warming 1,000 existing fields would be economical to © Natural Resources Defense Council pollution. produce at a price equal to $70 per barrel.
  • 2. Tapping into Stranded CO2-EOR Is Already Proven Successful Energy Facts Domestic Oil: Enhanced Oil The use of CO2 for commercial EOR began in the United Recovery with Carbon Dioxide States in the early 1970s. There are currently about 120 registered CO2 floods worldwide, almost 85 percent Is a Win-Win-Win of which are in the United States and Canada. Some 44 million tons of newly purchased CO2 annually are injected in mature oil reservoirs. To date, no significant documented environmental impacts from CO2 injection, such as to groundwater sources, have been reported. The impacts of CO2-EOR should be evaluated on a site-by-site Policies for CO2 Will Accelerate basis to ensure that the location is appropriate, taking Enhanced Oil Recovery into account infrastructure or transportation impacts Growth of CO2-EOR as a technique for extracting and subsurface conditions. Additional steps, such as oil has been limited because, until recently, oil careful field characterization combined with appropriate prices have been relatively low. Moreover, there monitoring, operational, and reporting procedures, can is limited availability of high-volume sources of ensure permanent sequestration of the CO2 in the oil the CO2 that is needed for EOR operations. As with any other oil-extraction process, responsible operations are essential and sound regulations can help short supply is now placing a premium on the cost minimize any surface or subsurface risks. of CO2 to operate the floods, which can add up to half the total costs of a CO2-EOR project. In Limiting CO2 emissions would increase the the absence of policies or national limits on CO2 supply and lower the cost of CO2 available for emissions, the cost of capturing anthropogenic EOR, making it possible to tap a much larger CO2 and the limited supply of CO2 from natural share of the untapped oil resource in existing underground “domes” have kept new projects in fields. The results of a recent study by the check. Rising oil prices however, have now made International Resources Group (IRG) analyzing CO2-EOR economics look far more attractive. how climate legislation could increase supplies of With CO2 supply for new EOR projects more CO2 for EOR demonstrate the power of CO2- constrained than ever, EOR operators are EOR combined with fuel efficiency: by 2025, oil exploring ways to expand their operations by using imports could drop from 70 to 35 percent of total anthropogenic CO2 to supplement natural sources. oil supply, due to both lower demand and greatly expanded domestic production from existing fields Domestic vs. Imported Oil Consumption (Quads) using CO2 captured from power plants and other sources.2 The study projects that the Lieberman- 50 With national limits on CO2 Warner Climate Security Act would accelerate emissions, CO2-EOR could reduce deployment of power plants using carbon capture oil imports to only 30 percent of systems and advanced vehicles and cellulose-based 40 total supply in 2025. biofuels.
