Philly School Turns to the Troops After Half are Ineligible for PromPierre LaRocco
Hundreds of students at South Philadelphia High School were told they were ineligible to attend prom due to excessive class cutting. The school came up with a program where students could create care packages for US troops to earn back their prom privileges. Any student who had cut more than 20 times had to submit one care package per 20 cuts. The goal was to teach the students responsibility while also supporting soldiers overseas. Many students embraced the chance to help troops in exchange for being able to go to prom.
The Sir John Wilson School held their graduation ceremony on Sunday at the Gulshan Club in Dhaka to celebrate the 11th batch of IGCSE and 4th batch of A Level graduates from the 2015-2016 school year. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Asia Pacific, the Chairman of the Social Services and Management Trust, the school Principal, teaching staff, and administrative staff were in attendance at the ceremony. A total of 34 IGCSE and 12 A Level graduates received their certificates and were followed by a short cultural program.
Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Fairfield, Iowa has achieved unprecedented academic, athletic, and artistic successes over the past 20 years. Students score in the top 1% nationally on standardized tests and over 95% are accepted to four-year colleges. The school holds numerous state records and national championships in academics, arts, athletics and more. Studies show students who practice the Transcendental Meditation technique twice daily lower blood pressure and stress levels. The school aims to develop student invincibility through perfect health, ideal social behavior, world peace, and total creative potential.

The Academic Council voted to reduce the number of required general education credit hours from 44 to 38 for incoming students beginning in fall 2015.

Dr. Aprilfaye Manalang recently joined Norfolk State University's Department of Interdisciplinary Studies after completing her PhD. Her areas of expertise are American studies with a focus on race relations and religion. She grew up in a military family with Filipino roots. For her dissertation, she studied the role of religion and ethnicity in shaping public life for Filipino immigrants. Since arriving at NSU, she has continued her research on the Hampton Roads Filipino community and won grants including one from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Her students organized an award for her in recognition of her outstanding teaching. Dr. Manalang says her heart is with her students and she is excited to continue her research and work with NSU students

The Sumter School District Teacher Forum organized a successful service project collecting school supplies and teddy bears for children affected by Hurricane Sandy. One hundred percent of the district's schools and offices participated, collecting 42 boxes of donations. The items were delivered to Brooklyn and Staten Island to help children whose lives were disrupted by the hurricane. The Teacher Forum aims to recognize teachers of the year, develop leadership, and facilitate professional development.

Twenty-three students received awards for outstanding social and behavioral sciences and public health research presented at the 2014 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in San Antonio, Texas. Over 3,600 people attended ABRCMS in 2014, including over 2,200 students who presented their research in posters and oral presentations across 12 disciplines. The 23 students who were awarded for their social and behavioral sciences and public health research are listed in the document.
The Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Auburn University had a successful year, celebrating the 50th anniversary of integration and focusing on recruiting and retaining minority students. Their recruitment efforts reached over 2,000 students through various on-site and off-site events. The COSAM Summer Bridge Program recruited 22 incoming freshmen and provided a positive experience for participants. We are in the midst of acquiring 20 additional acres of land adjacent to the school and continue to increase our numbers of applications, up another 150 this year. The school has a highly effective Board of Regents of 23 and a smooth President/Principal model of governance.

Saint Anselm student inducted into honor society
Saint Anselm College student Laura McCarthy of North Andover, a junior nursing major, was among
40 students inducted into the college's TAU Chapter of Delta Epsilon Sigma National Scholastic
Honor Society in a ceremony held on campus.
Delta Epsilon Sigma is a national scholastic honor society for students, faculty, and alumni of
colleges and universities with a Catholic tradition. Juniors must have a 3.2 cumulative grade point
average and seniors a 3.1 cumulative grade point average to apply for membership. Applicants are
selected by a committee of TAU chapter faculty and administrators based on academic standing,
leadership, and service to the college and community.
Becker College dean's list
Paige Hunter of North Andover was named to the dean's list for the fall 2013 semester at Becker
College in Worcester.
Keene State student named to LEC Winter All-Academic Team
Keene State College student Shelley Burns of North Andover, majoring in elementary
education/psychology, was among the 122 student-athletes who were named to the Little East
Conference Winter All-Academic Team.
Student-athletes were honored in five winter championship sponsored sports: men's and women's
basketball, men's and women's indoor track and field, and women's swimming and diving.
To earn a spot on the squad, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or
higher through the 2013 fall semester and be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
The student-athlete must also be a full-time member of a varsity sport and be enrolled in its
institution for a full academic year.
Westfield State student inducted into honor society
Shannon O'Connor of North Andover was recently initiated into Phi Kapp Phi, the nation's oldest and
most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. O'Connor was initiated at
Westfield State University.
O'Connor is among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be
initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and
approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least
72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the
number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and
alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is
2. the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society. The Society has chapters on more
than 300 college and university campuses in North America and the Philippines. Its mission is "To

Bates student presents at Mount David Summit
Bates College student Sarah Logan of North Andover delivered a researched-based presentation at
this year's Mount David Summit, the college's annual campus-wide celebration of student academic
achievement held in late March.
Page 2 of 2 - Broadly multidisciplinary, Mount David Summit shows the depth and expanse of
scholarship among Bates students, highlighting undergraduate research; student creative work in
art, dance, theater, music and film/video; projects conducted in the context of academic courses; and
community-engaged research.
Logan, who is majoring in biology at Bates, delivered a presentation titled "Intermittent Hyperoxia
and the Developing Respiratory System." Her research was supervised by Ryan Bavis, associate
professor of biology at Bates.
Logan, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Logan of North Andover, is a 2010 graduate of
Lawrence Academy.
Worcester Academy honor roll
The following North Andover residents were named to the honor roll for the second trimester of the
2013-2014 academic year at Worcester Academy in Worcester: sophomores Jacqueline Gangi and
Katrina Gangi.
The honor represents the achievements that each student has earned through academic excellence,
challenge and personal growth.
Brookwood School honor roll
Katie O'Brien of North Andover, a seventh grader at the Brookwood School in Manchester, was
named to the high honor roll for the winter term for earning a 90 average and no grade below 85.
Austin Prep students inducted into National Honor Society
Sophomores Haley Norris and Olivia Zdrojewski and junior Shuruthe Raju, all of North Andover,
were among the 57 students to be inducted into the National Honor Society at Austin Preparatory
School in Reading.
Inductees were welcomed into the NHS by current members during the ceremony in the Chapel of
St. Augustine, which culminated with a lighting of candles. After, the students and their families
celebrated their accomplishment at a reception in the dining hall.
University of Rochester dean's list
Jennifer Faye Newman, a senior majoring in psychology at the University of Rochester, was named
to the dean's list for academic achievement for the fall 2013 semester.
3. Newman, a resident of North Andover, is the daughter of Michael and Deborah Newman and a
graduate of Pingree School in Hamilton.
