Security for 5 business units with a team of 6 individuals covering 550
Unionized employees, 200 Non-Union employees and 1200 retirees.
OSHA incident frequency improved from 13.5 to 4.2
2010 successfully negotiated a 10% reduction in salary for one year for
union and non-union employees
2005 successfully negotiated a 3 year labour agreement with no
increase in wages or benefits
Supported the senior management team in reducing union workforce by
25% and staff by 50% while improving safety
Manage grievances covering 6 local unions in a range of 13 to 17 at any
given time.

As Chairman of three trustees, responsible for overseeing spending and
adherence to policies and procedures of the senior management team
with an annual budget of $150,000 and implemented investment
strategies for a $1 million dollar investment fund.

2. One of 9 directors responsible for all aspects of operating a newsprint
business with annual production of 350,000 tonnes per year. During this
period approved and oversaw the management for $375 million dollar
upgrade of the Newsmill, building of a Sawmill and improvements in
Effluent Treatment process.
During this period, approved acquisitions of a significant portion of
Tembec Inc assets along with a 20% position of Mallette Inc.
Chairman – Pension Investment Committee
Reporting to the SFI Board of Directors, one of 3 directors responsible
for over site of a $175 million dollar defined benefit pension plan on behalf
of 1000 employees and 1000 retirees. During this period the pension
fund was grown to $225 million dollars due primarily to investment
strategies.
Member – Safety, Health & Environmental Affairs Committee
Reporting to the SFI Board of Directors, provided oversight of the
management team to ensure improvements made in both Health & Safety
and Environment while meeting all regulatory and policy requirements.

Responsible for reviewing and communicating to the Union
representatives the financial state of the defined benefit pension plan and
approving any administrative changes to the same.

retirement, and implementing a basic HRIS system for the tracking of

3. President Ontario Manitoba Primary Council
• Training, organizing and preparing 22 Communication, Energy and
Paper Worker Locals for National Union Conventions in order to
provide a common position to set priorities for negotiations and
changes to the constitution. These Locals represented over 3,000
workers across Ontario and Manitoba.

• In 1994 negotiated a 5 year collective agreement without using
Conciliation or Mediation that included a 3 year wage deferral and
the Company becoming responsible for the funding of a Defined
Benefit Pension Plan
• In 1991, successfully lead an employee buyout of Spruce Falls
Power & Paper Company which included negotiating a single
Collective Agreement with 5 Local Unions, a Shareholders
Agreement and Management Support Agreement.
• In 1987, successfully negotiated a 3 year collective agreement with
reduction in early retirement age from age 60 to 58.
• During this 8 year period all issues regarding the Collective
Agreement were resolved without using Arbitration with the
exception of one issue. The decision of the Arbitrator ruled in favour
of the Union.
