By definition a sweatshop is a factory or
workshop, where manual workers are employed
at very low wages for long hours and under poor
working conditions.

4. Why we should be involved
The Legal employment age in China is 16, in
Bangladesh it’s 14 and in India no person under
14 can work in hazardous conditions. However,
all three of these countries contribute to the 250
million 5-14 year olds currently working in
sweatshops.
If workers wages doubled, prices to the
consumer would only increase by 1.8%,
assuming the companies exploiting these
workers would not cover the additional cost
themselves.

6. News Coverage
The issue of Sweatshops is rarely raised in the
media.
One of the most publicized stories in the media was
the Chinese help note found in Primark stores.
In addition to the note two further labels were found in
Primark clothes although the company claimed that
they were a probably a hoax.
It shouldn’t be the case that the issue is only covered
when something happens relating to that country, it’s
a problem that needs to be tackled worldwide as
countries that do not contain sweatshops still have
companies within the country that exploit them
elsewhere.
