Child labour is both a social and economic problem in India. Many children, some as young as 5-6 years old, work long hours in hazardous occupations like carpet weaving, fireworks manufacturing, and household work. Poverty, illiteracy, large family sizes, and the willingness of employers to exploit cheap child labour are some of the key causes of child labour in India. Children who work face serious health and development issues like physical injuries, malnutrition, stunted growth, and even death. The government has enacted laws to regulate and restrict child labour, but enforcement remains a challenge due to poverty.
