This document provides an overview of key concepts in memory psychology including the three stages of memory (encoding, storage, retrieval), models of memory processing that compare the human brain to a computer, different types of long-term and short-term memory, factors that influence memory like emotions and sleep, common memory errors and biases, strategies to improve memory like repetition and active recall, and examples of exceptional memories in savants.
How the law protects investment in technology - trade secrets, patents, desig...Jane Lambert
On Wednesday 27 Nov 2013 I addressed a seminar on trade secrets, patents, copyrights, design rights, semiconductor topographies and plant varieties. Although I delivered my talk without slides I have prepare these as an aide mémoire for those who attended the talk. They are supplemented by an accompanying handout.
Patent law developed during the industrial revolution when technology meant new products and processes but it now includes software, data, silicon chips and new plant and seed varieties. Consequently patents are fine for protecting developments in manufacturing but not quite so good protecting the new information based industries.
In addition to my overview of these rights I discussed the advantages and disadvantages of patents as opposed to trade secrets law. I suggested a simple IP strategy for most and discussed enforcement.

This document discusses strategies for building confidence and credibility when facing conflicts. It recommends using a co-creation approach to address interests of both parties and find mutual gains. Co-creation involves building on each other's ideas using responses like "Yes, and..." to reduce fear and increase understanding. Exercises are provided to practice co-creation, such as collaboratively telling a story. The document advises using "you" and "I" messages to openly share interests and perspectives to better understand each other and find solutions where both sides' needs are met.
MRP is a production planning and inventory control system that uses a master production schedule, bill of materials, and inventory data to determine material requirements. It generates planned order releases to ensure materials and components are available when needed for production. Benefits of MRP include reduced inventory levels, faster production and delivery times, improved efficiency, and better ability to respond to changes. MRP determines requirements by calculating net requirements based on scheduled production and current inventory levels.
The document discusses Jesus Christ's humble nature through several Bible verses and passages. It describes how Jesus was born in a barn, rejected by many he came to save, served others as a servant, entered Jerusalem humbly on a donkey, washed his disciples' feet in humility, was silent before his accusers, was mocked by evil men, was crucified between two criminals, and stooped to our human level through his death on the cross. The purpose is to illustrate Jesus' humility and encourage the reader to invite him into their heart and life.

Building an app-like experience (without the app)chaefele
This document discusses building app-like experiences without actual apps. It compares apps to webapps, noting apps are single-platform while webapps are multi-platform, and apps have full hardware access while webapps have limited access. It recommends using frameworks like iUI and jQuery Mobile to create responsive webapps that work across devices without native apps. It also provides examples of incorporating barcode scanning into webapps by linking to scanning apps on iPhone and Android platforms.
Introduction to intellectual property handloutJane Lambert
This document provides an introduction to intellectual property basics, including patents, trademarks, registered designs, unregistered design rights, copyright, rights in performances, laws of confidence, and passing off. It explains how some intellectual property rights arise spontaneously while others must be registered with intellectual property offices in the UK, Europe, or other countries. Useful services are also listed, such as intellectual property offices, patent information units, help for inventors, and sources of funding.
Geese fly in a V formation to increase flying range. Each goose creates uplift for the one behind it, allowing the flock to travel 71% further than if flying alone. When a goose becomes tired, it rotates back in the formation while another takes the lead. Geese also stay with sick or injured members, helping them fly or providing protection until they recover or die. The lesson is that cooperation, leadership sharing, and supporting each other allows people and geese to achieve more as a group than alone.
This document presents a case study on applying Six Sigma methodology to streamline the financial reporting process within the finance department of a major defense contractor. The goal of the project, called Continuing Account Reconciliation Enhancement (CARE), was to standardize and document the process for establishing and maintaining costing and planning within the current financial management system. Applying Six Sigma's DMAIC framework, the team mapped the existing process, identified inefficiencies, standardized procedures, and achieved significant reductions in cycle time and cost per report produced. The results showed Six Sigma can successfully be applied beyond manufacturing to optimize business processes in other functions like finance.
House sales customer_satisfaction_surveyjsembiring
This document summarizes a survey of customers who applied to purchase their home from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive but did not complete the purchase. Key findings include:
- Most respondents were female, aged 45-65, and receiving benefits such as housing benefits and disability benefits.
- Over 70% had been Housing Executive tenants for over 15 years and most lived in houses.
- Around 70% withdrew their application after receiving the formal offer due to the high price of the property.
- Respondents were generally satisfied with the application process and communication from the Housing Executive, but the majority cited financial reasons for not completing the purchase.
WIPO Arbitration: Current Trends with Intellectual Property and Domain Name D...Jane Lambert
These are the slides of the presentation that my colleague, Joseph Dalby of the IP and Tech Law Group of 4-5 Gray's Inn Square, gave to the monthly arbitration forum of the Irish branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Joseph had helped to set up the Irish domain name dispute resolution policy and he discussed it in some detail highlighting some of the differences between the Irish policy, the ICANN Universal Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy ("UDRP"), the Nominet Dispute Resolution Service Policy and the Czech Court of Arbitration Rules for the resolution of disputes in the ".eu" top level domain name space. Joseph also discussed the legal issues likely to arise from the new generic top level domain names.
This document contrasts the righteousness of man versus the righteousness of God through examining the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. In the parable, a Pharisee thanks God that he follows the law strictly, while a tax collector humbly asks God for mercy. Though the tax collector was considered sinful, Jesus says he was justified, while the self-righteous Pharisee was not. The document emphasizes that God desires mercy over sacrifice and saves those who know they need Him, not the self-righteous who think they can save themselves.
This document is a slideshow celebrating Debbie and Tim's 10th wedding anniversary. It consists of over 30 quotes describing different aspects of marriage, including that marriage is a union, companionship, understanding each other's faults, caring for each other, kindness, support, communication, sacrifice, learning from each other, respect, and discovery. The overall message is that marriage can be the most satisfying and strengthening experience when built on these foundations.
The document discusses the development of human life from conception through birth in an effort to establish that human life begins at conception. It provides scientific definitions of key terms and describes the physical development of the fetus in each trimester of pregnancy. Biblical passages are included that assert God's knowledge and involvement in human development from the womb. The document ultimately argues that abortion terminates a human life.
The document discusses how many scientific discoveries were described in the Bible centuries or thousands of years before being discovered by science, including: the earth being spherical, the number of stars being uncountable, the hydrologic cycle, valleys and springs in the seas, and jet streams. It provides biblical references for each of these examples and argues that science has often served to confirm truths already contained in the Bible.
1. Though speaking multiple languages, having spiritual gifts, or doing good works are commendable, they are worthless without love for others that prevents gossip, puts others first, and shows kindness even in difficult situations.
2. Love is patient, does not envy others' success, is not rude or selfish, finds joy in others' well-being rather than its own desires, and believes the best in people until proven otherwise.
3. True love takes risks by making oneself vulnerable through caring for others, but this opens one up to experience life and relationships more fully.
The poem describes what it means to say "I am a Christian". It suggests that being a Christian means admitting flaws and failures, seeking guidance from God, and not judging others. The document then provides biblical passages that say being a Christian means following Jesus' teachings of love, and that church membership alone does not make one a Christian any more than occasional involvement makes one a mechanic or musician. It encourages sharing this message to clarify what it truly means to be a Christian.

1. A group of students were asked to list the seven wonders of the world and provided their own lists which included structures like the Great Pyramids and Taj Mahal.
2. One student hesitated to provide her list, but eventually shared that her seven wonders were to see, hear, touch, taste, feel, laugh, and love.
3. The room fell silent upon hearing this response, realizing that the simple things we often take for granted, like our senses and ability to experience emotions, are truly wonderful.
This document discusses the views of several Nobel Prize winning scientists on the relationship between science and faith in God. It summarizes that:
1) Many renowned scientists like Arthur Compton and Arno Penzias believe scientific discoveries point to evidence of an intelligent creator based on the order and origins of the universe.
2) Other scientists like Ernst Chain and Arthur Schawlow find that scientific study increases their need and ability to have faith in God.
3) The document concludes that true science validates and points to the existence of God as the creator of the intricate natural world.

A toxic combination of 15 years of low growth, and four decades of high inequality, has left Britain poorer and falling behind its peers. Productivity growth is weak and public investment is low, while wages today are no higher than they were before the financial crisis. Britain needs a new economic strategy to lift itself out of stagnation.
Scotland is in many ways a microcosm of this challenge. It has become a hub for creative industries, is home to several world-class universities and a thriving community of businesses – strengths that need to be harness and leveraged. But it also has high levels of deprivation, with homelessness reaching a record high and nearly half a million people living in very deep poverty last year. Scotland won’t be truly thriving unless it finds ways to ensure that all its inhabitants benefit from growth and investment. This is the central challenge facing policy makers both in Holyrood and Westminster.
What should a new national economic strategy for Scotland include? What would the pursuit of stronger economic growth mean for local, national and UK-wide policy makers? How will economic change affect the jobs we do, the places we live and the businesses we work for? And what are the prospects for cities like Glasgow, and nations like Scotland, in rising to these challenges?

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

OJP data from firms like Vicinity Jobs have emerged as a complement to traditional sources of labour demand data, such as the Job Vacancy and Wages Survey (JVWS). Ibrahim Abuallail, PhD Candidate, University of Ottawa, presented research relating to bias in OJPs and a proposed approach to effectively adjust OJP data to complement existing official data (such as from the JVWS) and improve the measurement of labour demand.
In a tight labour market, job-seekers gain bargaining power and leverage it into greater job quality—at least, that’s the conventional wisdom.
Michael, LMIC Economist, presented findings that reveal a weakened relationship between labour market tightness and job quality indicators following the pandemic. Labour market tightness coincided with growth in real wages for only a portion of workers: those in low-wage jobs requiring little education. Several factors—including labour market composition, worker and employer behaviour, and labour market practices—have contributed to the absence of worker benefits. These will be investigated further in future work.

Enhancing Asset Quality: Strategies for Financial Institutions
No Profit Hi
1. NO PROFIT! NO PROFIT! NO PROFIT! NO PROFIT! NO PROFIT! NO PROFIT! NO PROFIT! NO PROFIT! NO PROFIT! NO PROFIT! NO PROFIT! A LESSON ON LOVE!
2. Have you ever read 1Corinthians 13? If you have, remember what it says?
3. 1 CORINTHIANS 13: 1-8 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profiteth me nothing. Love suffereth long, and is kind; love envieth not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up. Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not its own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Love Never Fails!
4. Those weren’t Paul’s words; those words were inspired by God and they show how He feels; they expose His heart and how He judges when it comes to accomplishments vs. love.
5. That means that things done without love, or things accomplished at the cost of showing love and compassion and care for others, are unprofitable work — a waste of time, idle work, useless work, work no better in His eyes than the idle words you’ll have to give account for . It says that if you do all those things, but don’t have love, it profits you nothing. No profit = No good.
6. No profit means that it didn’t help you any. You might think that your haste and hurry and the lacks in your kindness and consideration of others will be justified in the end, but they won’t be. The end will not justify the means.
7. You can rush through life “getting stuff done,” but you will have failed if you don’t take time to care for others…
8. … to love them, and to even delay the more important things you have to do in order to show those immediately around you that you care about them and their needs and that they matter to you.
9. ACCOMPLISHMENTS ♦ Sent a big donation to missionaries in Africa. ♦ Free presentations in 5 slums & 8 orphanages. ♦ Volunteered 20 hrs. a week at the local hospital. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Walked ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Personal time with my family. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Help Jenny with her homework. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Time with Johnny.
10. There’s nothing that can compensate for a lack of love. There are no works that you can do which will make it okay that you didn’t care for those around you.
11. And since you cannot make up for a lack of love, the only solution, if you want your life to amount to anything in the next world is to show that love. Love is the only way to live. The greatest of these is Love! Love is life.
12. LIVING IN THE LORD’S LOVE! Life has the extra dimension found in Jesus Christ. So when you feel that love has dried up, reach out to Him, and learn to love again. Love is like a stream. Some days it flows and rushes, for there is plenty. On other days it trickles and you can see it bouncing against the unseen rocks. But even when love is dry and has lost its flow and lies nearly empty on the muddy bottom, there is more love to come. We remember how Jesus loved, how He forgave, and how He reached out to show He cared. By using Jesus as the Source of love, we can fill up the stream again.
13. Jesus is the Authority on love. He loves when love is hard. He loves when love is rejected. He loves when love makes little sense. Jesus loves when others would quit. Jesus loves when others are ugly. Jesus loves when others are cold. Jesus loves when others are unworthy. If you haven’t yet, you can ask Him into your heart by praying the following: PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO OTHERS! “ Dear Jesus, I want the gifts of eternal life, love, and purpose that You offer. I open my life and heart to You now, and accept You as my Savior. Please forgive me for all the wrongs I’ve done, give me a fresh start, and help me get to know you and Your love. Amen.” Tommy’s Window For more PowerPoint messages click here:
