The Rise of Nationalism in Europe
Nationalism is an idea and movement that promotes the interests of a particular nation especially with the aim of gaining and maintaining the nation's sovereignty over its homeland.

2. Roman Empire The first empire that was a republic instead of a Monarchy. Alexander the Great created Rome which was the 1st European empire. The first creators of law, they had the 12 tables. America, Spain, and Europe all use Roman architecture, law principles, and base their language from the Romans. The Romans were military innovators who had very strategic ways of battle.
3. Slavery Began in Roman times but those slaves had a high social status and some were tutors. European slaves made up the peasant workforce and worked in agriculture. Slave trade began in 1444 when the Spanish took 233 slaves back to Spain with them. The first European state to abolish slavery was Denmark in 1792. In 1870 slave trade came to an end worldwide. Slaves outnumbered the number of Europeans in America 5 to 1.
4. Napoleon Crowned by Pope Pius VII on December 12, 1804. Napoleon wanted to unify all of Europe because he felt Europe was broken. He thought French people were the model for every society. Kicked out of Egypt in 1814 and exiled to the island of Elba by British and Ottoman forces. Napoleon was defeated in 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo.
