As of 2006, White people made up 66.6% of the US population, However: 82% of college and university teachers are white 89% of lawyers are white & 98% of prosecuting attorneys are white 79% of accountants and auditors are white 75% of doctors and surgeons are white 86% of non-profit board members are white 96% senators are white Rosetta Eun Ryong Lee Rosetta Eun Ryong Lee (http://sites.google.com/site/sgsprofessionaloutreach/)
Women make up almost half the working population of the United States. And yet: Women make 78 cents to a man’s dollar. The wage gap has been closing at a rate of less than half a penny a year. If equal pay for women happened right now, across the board, women would gain $319 billion in 2008 dollars. Unequal pay kicks in shortly after college graduation, when women and men should, absent discrimination, be on a level playing field. Women still are segregated into "pink-collar" jobs that are lower skill and lower pay. For example, women make up 87% of child care workers and 86% of the health aides. The Changing World: Within Your Lifetime… Whites will no longer be a majority in the United States. 1 in 8 members of US households will be Spanish speakers. An estimated 1 in 10 persons in the United States will be gay or lesbian or will have been raised by gay or lesbian parents More and more women will have children later in their lives and/or without marrying. More than 1 in 10 Korean Americans will have entered the United States through adoption, many of them by non-Korean parents. Editor's Notes

  • #2 Strand structure: activity, theory, application, break Goals: information, conversation, activity for experience and to use in classroom and/or professional development. Requests and FYI: Theory overview only, but ask questions if unclear, please hold examples for example section. Everyone’s experience will be different so it is ok if not everyone can relate to everyone else’ personal experience. Will not get to every theory in depth nor will we be able to share all experiences. Goal is to introduce for further study and gain enough examples to apply. Resource materials: available in hard copy and electronically (USB drive, computer desktop, email). Please take only hard copies you know you will use so we can be as green as possible.
