CHARACTHERISTICS

BASIC STRUCTURE OF
NEWS
Straight News.
The data are presented in direct fashion using
summary lead.
Summary lead. The summary lead answers the
five Ws and one H (What, Who, Where, When,
Why and How).
The story is presented using the inverted pyramid
form where the most important data are in the
first and second paragraph
News Feature. The data are presented
indirectly through the use of the novelty lead.
Novelty lead. It attracts the reader’s attention, arouse his
curiosity and sustain his interest.
(Narrative, Descriptive, Anecdote, Quotation,
Question, One-Word , etc.)
1. “Parents, please help us save our children

challenges posed by Dr. Evelyn Castaneto,
Public Schools District Supervisor of
Villaverde during the Mass Induction of
General PTA Officers, September 16, 2017.
2. To lessen the problem of
inadequate classrooms as a result of
the annual increase in enrolment and
severe budget constraints, Solano
High School adopted the double shift
policy for school year 2017-2018.
3. It was 9:20 in the evening. The family was
watching TV. with the house helpers in the sala
except me. I locked myself in our study room
because I had to finish my book report, which was
due the following morning.
Suddenly, there was a hurried knock on the
door. “The twin tower is burning!” said my younger
sister. I rushed downstairs. I can’t believe it. Fear
crept inside me. I felt nauseated for I have an uncle
whose house is less than a mile away from the
twin towers.
TIPS ON
WRITING
EFFECTIVE
LEAD
1. Use simple sentence
2. Do not overload the beginning
paragraph with the answers of the Five
W and one H. The second paragraph is a
secondary lead too.
3. Do not use an important or unusual
word twice to the same sentences.
4. Avoid the use of articles such as a,
an , and in the beginning of your lead.
5. A paragraph should not exceed
three sentences or 75 words. For easy
reading, average number of words
per sentence should be 15 to 20.
6. Important facts should be placed
at the beginning of the paragraph.
7. Arrange paragraphs in the
descending order of importance.
8. Avoid repetition of clauses,
phrases and other similar words at
the beginning of each paragraph

‘ Helen’ triggers heavy rain, flooding

Tropical Depression “ Helen” dumped heavy rains on most parts
of Northern Luzon on Tuesday night and intensified on Wednesday
afternoon, but changed course and skirted land.
As Helen swirled over the Philippine Sea, East Northeast of
Cagayan at a slow pace, the storm spawned heavy rainfall in Cagayan,
Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Zambales and Mt. Province.
During the 24-hour period beginning Tuesday morning, weather
forecasters recorded the highest rainfall at their stations in Laoag City
(483.9millimeters),Vigan(192.6 mm),Aparri (152 mm) and Tuguegarao
(23.2 mm).

IlLAGAN, Isabela- Three suspects in last Saturday’s shooting
incident which resulted in the killing of a policeman and the
wounding of another have been arrested and now in police
custody, reports disclosed yesterday.
Senior Superintendent Dominador Aquino, provincial
police director, however, neither confirmed nor denied allegations
that the suspects, including one or more who remain at large ,
and whose identities were withheld pending further investigation,
were aides of a local official here.
