What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology (AT) is any device, gadget, tool, hardware or software used by a person with a
disability to do things for themselves that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to do because of
their disability.
AT is the use of devices to increase mobility, communication and overall independence of people with
disabilities and functional limitations.
How does CRIL’s AT program work?
CRIL’s AT coordinator will work with consumers to develop an independent living plan and identify the
device, equipment or resource that will best accommodate them. CRIL has a broad library of devices
available to choose from that can assist those with ranging disabilities in attaining fuller independence
at work, home and in the community.
AT devices can be borrowed from CRIL, or from other lending libraries in the state, at no cost. The loan
period is typically one month but can range from 2-8 weeks. Following the loan, the AT coordinator can
assist consumers in purchasing the device for themselves. If the consumer needs financial assistance,
the AT coordinator can also provide a referral to reuse the program or to a affordable loan program.
What type of AT devices are there?
Assistive Technology ranges from low tech items like a pill organizer or cane, to high tech items like a
talking alarm clock or an iPad.
