This is the presentation for BBC News Storyline data model part of the BBC Connected Studio briefing event for the BBC News Archive Connected Studio.
The presentation is aimed at providing context for the participants, so that they have a view of how content will be tagged, and how it will surface in BBC News.

Scale and adapt: A story of how we built Responsive BBC News
Life used to be easy. We created sites to work on a few browsers and when we had time we asked the new guy to build a half baked mobile version. Then the device explosion ruined our cozy happy dev life.
My talk will discuss how BBC News met this challenge at scale.
How we support as many devices as possible using responsive design
Why performance is key to our success and how we managed to keep the site lean
How we scale to serve BBC News to the masses
What tools we use to help us along the way

Ralph Rivera - BBC Online: One service, ten products, four screensBBC
Ralph Rivera's presentation on BBC Online's new strategy; the BBC's plans to reorganise its portfolio of 400 websites into create ten seperate products, and a single service greater than the sum of its parts. Rivera also talks about plans to develop the products to work seamlessly across 4 screens (mobile, tablets, PCs and connected TVs) and how social and algorithmic curation can help the BBC build on its traditional strengths as a trusted broadcaster.

BBC: CI Problems and our Solutions by Simon ThulbournDocker, Inc.
At BBC News, we've had a lot off issues with using CI environments for building and testing. Recently, we've taken a lot of time in order to solve these issues. We've created a new Jenkins setup to simplify our environment and in build & test our software inside on containers, even if ultimately we're not deploying in a container. This workflow has saved us potentially days of lost developer time.

These slides are from one module of a proposed series. The full plan for an information literacy workshop is targeted for undergraduate students at a liberal arts college, and each part of the plan is mapped to the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, developed by the Association of College and Research Libraries in 2000. While this workshop does include both technical work with the Omeka platform and content-based research, the main goal of this workshop is to help undergraduate students, faculty, and administrators be more aware of their own information literacy as both consumers and producers of information, by showing them how databases and digital exhibits are constructed with human labor and decision making, including respect for intellectual property.
From text to entities: Information Extraction in the Era of Knowledge GraphsGraphRM
Incontro del 23/07/2018
In recent years there has been a proliferation of free and commercial "knowledge graphs" (KGs), which represent real-world entities together with their semantic relationships in a graphical form. Those are becoming a powerful asset both for tech giants, with Google Knowledge Graph, IBM’s Watson QA system and Facebook’s Open Graph, as well as for startups that are developing AI products, such as, semantic search, data analytics, recommender systems. While KGs provide a structured access to a large amount of knowledge, a vast majority of the information available on the Web is still inaccessible because encoded only in the form of natural-language text. The talk will present an overview of public available KGs and the main techniques used to bridge unstructured text with them, enabling a wide variety of knowledge-based applications.

"The Birth of the Newsroom of Things" for Hacks Hackers London; Linked Data i...BBC News Labs
A presentation by Matt Shearer in Feb 2015 at Hacks Hackers London.
This presentation is a case study, starting in Summer 2012, of how THE JUICER helped BBC NEWS adopt and launch Linked Data, by providing a prototyping platform.
BBC NEWS LABS is a lean incubator, charged with driving innovation for BBC NEWS. We focus on the intersection of Journalism, Data and Technology, and look into scalable opportunities.
The Newsroom of Things by BBC News Labs - for ISKOUK "Taming the News Beast"BBC News Labs
This presentation outlines how BBC News Labs is currently working on entity extraction on BBC News content.
It looks at the challenge of how BBC News is going to leverage it's USP of Storytelling, and it's famous purpose - "to INFORM, EDUCATE & ENTERTAIN" globally.
With the millions and millions of "things" that are in our content, how do we discover and connect these things?..
It also mentions 2 key BBC News Labs projects "JUICER" and "#newsVANE", and promotes the http://newshack.co.uk/newshack-ii/ event on May 1st in Dublin & Glasgow.
Rapid Prototyping - a good idea for Startups - battling the human conditionBBC News Labs
This presentation was prepared for a free international startup conference at Ravensbourne College, London.
This is not an extensive "How To" guide for rapid prototyping, it is more a quick guide to outline why we do it, and to give a quick overview of the process.
Mainly: Rapid Prototyping is a great way to battle the human condition: our natural tendencies to spend too much time perfecting an idea or product before launching it; to refine ideas FOREVER, and not test them early enough.

Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

3. linked data tagging
the audience can find and follow content
relevant to them.
topic tag: a person, organisation, place or
theme.
storyline tag: a storyline, or its component
events.
4. why do it this way?
it powers serendipity.
we organise by the “things” people want.
and connect with meaningful links.
5. context
Storyline is an open model.
BBC are now tagging new content.
the archive is not tagged yet.
6. topics - people
Bashar al-Assad
Thamsanqa Jantjie
Lara Clarke
Nick Robinson
a Person can have properties like
‘birth-place’, ‘birth-date’, and
roles like ‘President of Syria’ or
‘interpreter’
7. topics - organisations
an Organisation can have properties
like ‘address’, ‘website’, and can
be notably associated with a person,
place or theme
8. topics - places
Places can have a
latitudes/longitudes and parent
features (an administrative district
or country for example)
10. storylines
storylines are a way to link up and
present content to the audience as a
narrative
storylines are a special sort of
linked data tag for annotating and
aggregating content
storylines can be tagged with topics
18. before we finish
we can’t tag everything manually.
we can autotag topics,
and fingerprint into Storylines.
19. over to you
organise news content by storylines
link storylines together with topics
relate archive storylines to current news
surface unexpected connected stories:
“Death of Mandela” “Mandela’s life
sentence” “Thatcher’s foreign policy”
“Falklands War” …
Jeremy is co-author of Storyline, and drives the Linked Data strategy for BBC News
Matt works with BBC News Labs, and is running the 6 months to 2 years innovation horizon for BBC News.
tagging helps the audience find and follow content relevant to them.
It also helps some 8,000 of our Journalists find and share material quickly and efficiently.
topic tag: a unique ID (a URI) for a person, organisation, place or theme
storyline or event tag: a unique ID (URI) for a storyline or its component events
Events vs Storyline : can be a confusing conversation – think of events as “something that happens at a time and a place, and may have associated topics”
The power is then the connections that can amplify what we curate – massive serendipity.
We establish the “topics” people love, and focus on the Storylines of value.
Emotional connection, passionate connection.
This will help surface millions of hours of archive content, organised into the “things” the audience LOVE and WANT.
It’s open – not just BBC – Guardian, FT will be using it. SKY News are interested.
Also, at BBC it is not just NEWS – other areas are using the same topic model, so News Archive will surface there too.
theme preferred label is BBC ed pol – do we say “drugs” or “narcotics”?
In a se
similar to a hyperpuff in CPS
using the linked data s-p-o pattern we can use predicates to describe the nature of the relationship between content and tag-concept
these predicate/relationships can provide signposts to our audience in large content collections
storylines can contain other storylines
like chapters in a book
storylines can contain events
e.g. linking together live events into a wider narrative
There will be a degree of automatic tagging using concept extraction.
Speech-> Text -> CE-> CV & disambiguation -> Topic Tags.
Image-> face recog -> People -> CV & disambiguation -> Topic Tags.
This gives us Topics.
We can then associate to Storylines via Fingerprinting.
i.e. match topic [et al metadata] fingerprint to Storyline topic fingerprint.
So - Journlists to tell the Story : Storyline!! – and we hope machines can do the rest…
We have a good way to arrange the data.
BUT – the user experience and product feature possibilities are infinite!
We need your help!
