2. RADIO 2 [88-90.2 FM]. JAZZ PARADE (Mon-Thu night 12.05-12.35am) talks
to Artie Shaw (9th & 16th Jun) about his UK concert and the reissued 'Rare &
Unreleased Recordings' CDs. Jason Rebello's concert at London's Jazz Café
is broadcast in its entirety (3rd, 10th, 17th). Sessions by The Hugh Rainey
Quintet (1st), Humphrey Lyttleton (8th) & The Ray Terry Band (15th). Ronny
Jordan (1st Jul) recorded at the Jazz Café. Note that the Friday edition is
suspended during June, but there is … A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT JAZZ
(Mon-Fri 12.05-1am) is a special week of concert recordings, replacing 'Jazz
Parade', with The Modern Jazz Quartet (21st) at Hertfordshire Jazz Festival,
The Humphrey Lyttleton Big Band (22nd), The Ronnie Scott Quintet (23rd),
George Chisholm & Maxine Daniels (24th), The EBU Big Band (25th) and Cleo
Laine, John Dankworth & Friends (26th). JOHN DUNN's guest is Artie Shaw
(Mon 8th 5-7pm), in London to conduct at the Festival Hall. BIG BAND
SPECIAL (Mon 8th & 15th 8.30-9pm) presents The BBC Big Band recorded at
the Jersey Jazz Festival. BILLY MAYERL: THE MARIGOLD MAN (Tue 9th 9-
10pm) has Steve Race examining the career of the king of syncopated piano.
THE GRUMBLEWEEDS (Thu 11th 7-7.30pm) are joined by trombonist George
Chisholm. MILDRED BAILEY (Mon 15th 10-10.30pm) has her career
appraised by Dave Gelly. BUNNY (Mon 15th 10-10.30pm) is a one-off feature
about Bunny Berigan by Campbell Burnap. BEST OF JAZZ (Mon 9-10pm)
continues its run and on 29th a special guest replaces holidaying presenter
Humphrey Lyttelton. IVIE ANDERSON (Mon 29th 10-10.30pm) comes under
Dave Gelly's musical spotlight.
RADIO 3 [90.2-92.4 FM]. BEFORE THE BLUES (Thu 11-11.30pm from 11th)
is a repeat of Paul Oliver's 1988 Sony Award-winning eight-part documentary.
This examination of the roots of black American blues music uses many rare
recordings and interviews. NORDIC SYNCOPATIONS (Fri 6.30-7pm from
12th) is a repeat of John Surman's six-part series about Scandinavian jazz
musicians. This Friday night jazz documentary slot is subject to disruption from
ball-by-ball cricket commentaries, hence no new series until the season's end.
JAZZ FROM THE BATH FESTIVAL presents concerts by George Shearing &
Neil Swainson (Mon 1st 7.30pm), Danny Thompson's Whatever (Sat 13th
11pm) and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (Mon 15th 10pm).
BBC WORLD SERVICE [648 AM & shortwave]. A new eight-part series of
Paul Jones' COUNTERPOINT (Mon 11.15-11.45pm & Tue 7.30-8am) starts
22nd Jun, including plenty of jazz and blues. Continuing their run are the
request show JAZZ FOR THE ASKING (Sat 11.15-11.45pm & Sun 7.30-8am)
and George Reid's JAZZ NOW AND THEN (Sat 2.45-3am & Sat 11-11.15am).
JAZZ FM [London 102.2 FM] has TRIPLE PLAY WEEKENDS that
demonstrate the station's jazz expertise, with 'Billy Holliday' (their spelling!!) on
6th/7th Jun, big blues on 13th/14th, classic jazz/funk on 20th/21st, and Aretha
Franklin on 27th/28th. The revised weekend schedule brings veteran soul
presenter Dave Gregory to the station, and new permanent slots for breakfast
fill-in Mark Walker and relief DJ Patrick Walker. Saturday now runs: 6-10am
Barry Jones, 10am-2pm Paul Jones, 2-5pm Steve Edwards, 5-9pm Dave
Gregory, 9-11pm DINNER PARTY JAZZ, 11pm-2am Alex George. Sunday: 6-
10am Barry Jones, 10am-1pm Bill Oddie, 1-3pm Campbell Burnap, 3-6pm

Mark Walker, 6-10pm Patrick Walker, 10pm-2am Alex George. DJ Steve
Edwards recently told 'The Voice' newspaper that his daily show demanded
little preparation because "there are set formats" and "it is mostly
computerised". "I think I have perhaps an older audience," he said, "but I am
just guessing." Edwards is not the only person wondering who tunes in to 'Jazz
FM'. Latest research shows the station attracted a mere 1.5% share of London
radio listening during its recent massive poster campaign.

WILTSHIRE SOUND, DEVON & CORNWALL. Chris Walker's JAZZ
SOUNDS (Wed 8.05-9.25pm) has a live session from The Real Ale & Thunder
Band on 24th Jun.
