Sarah Michelle Smart: Navy Veteran Pursuing New Career
1. SARAH MICHELLE SMART
Sarah, is a 28yrs, Houston, Texas native that grew up as an avid equestrian and literature
enthusiast. She graduated from Pearland High School in 2007 while actively participating and
holding leadership roles in various organizations including NHS. After, Sarah attended Texas
A&M University where she pursued a degree in Psychology with a minor in neuroscience. She
worked on two active research projects which challenged social perception and substance
abuse recovery. Due to lack of funds she was forced to leave prematurely but continued
education while working. In 2012 she enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an Operation Specialist. After
successfully completing Operations Specialist School, Sarah was assigned to USS Mahan, an
Arleigh-Burke class destroyer. Sarah has completed two successful deployments to 5th and 6th
(Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and Gulf of Oman) fleet areas of operation. As Operations
Specialist second class Petty Officer, Sarah has been instrumental in the successful training of
five Tactical Data Coordinators, led training in BMD, IAMD, NSFS, ASW, CSTT, ESWS, Damage
Control, CIC Operations, Naval Security Force Support, Local Element (classified material
custodian) among other accomplishments.

Sarah actively participated in Student Council, Science National Honors Society, Future Farmers
of America, U.S. Equestrian Association and lettered in equestrian riding and horse judging.

While at TAMU Sarah participated in two active research projects studying social perception
and addiction therapy.
Operations Specialist School October 2012
Operations specialists provide to their shipboard or shore-based command a wide range of
technical information and assistance related to anti-surface warfare, anti-air warfare, anti-
submarine warfare, amphibious warfare, mine warfare, naval gunfire support, search and
rescue operations, radar and dead reckoning.
Enlisted SurfaceWarfareSpecialist May 2013
The ESWS qualification is obtained only by enlisted service members of surface ship commands.
Earning ESWS means that the sailor has completed training in all aspects of the ship from ship
handling to weapons and systemknowledge.
Tactical Data Coordinator School February 2014
Tactical Data Coordinators are responsible for data links communications via radio, waves or
cables. They have the ability to build architectures, evaluate communications both voice and
data and trouble shoot equipment. Further information is classified but may be available upon

Air InterceptController School (level 2) May 2015
This course of instruction enables AIC’s to analyze and transmit to the interceptor air crew
necessary tactical information in a combat environment. An extensive knowledge in fleet
doctrine directives, knowledge of U.S. and threat aircraft capabilities and limitations is
imperative. The ability to assess current tactical manuals, threat intelligence and incorporate it
into battle space management is necessary for success. Further information is classified and

3. RECOGNITION
Flag Letter of Accommodation August2016
Sarah was awarded this FLOC for her work during the IKE strike group OPFOR underway as the
lead Tactical Data Coordinator by Rear Admiral B.H. Lindsey. She was responsible for Force
Tract Data Coordinator duties to include architecture management, OPFOR exercises and
working in a C2D2E environment.
Good ConductMedal May 2015
The Good Conduct Medal is awarded to service members that complete three consecutive
years of service with no record of misbehavior to include non-judicial punishment.
2014 U.S. Navy Ballistic Missile Defense Sailor of the Year 5th
Fleet October 2014
For her work as Senior Tactical Data Coordinator on board USS Mahan, Sarah received this
award. Her collaboration with UAE, Navy, Air force and Army Patriot batteries led theater
