Creating Tables - Concepts
• Create Table Statements (or DDL) are written in Hive
• High degree of flexibility
• Schema on Read
• Hive is SQL like but allows other concepts such “external
tables” and partitioning of data
• Data formats supported – JSON, TXT, CSV, TSV, Parquet
and ORC (via Serdes)

  1. Hi everyone, welcome to join the first session of big data analytics track. I am Harry Lin, solution architect at amazon web service. It’s good to be here to share this new and exciting service with you. Let’s start the journey of Athena.
  2. What I would like to do today is to give you an overview of Athena, walk through some of its key features. Then I will show one customer’s example to see how they use Athena in their architecture and services, and then ends with Athena demonstration.
  3. Why do we build Athena? Here are challenges that we heard from our customers.
  4. We want to provide query service that would let you query data in S3 without having to move it, and you can use standard SQL. The reason why I highlight interactive query service is because we want to give you the result fast, that most of results come back in seconds. And also it is not database
  5. Because we deliver it as automatic managed service, when we make updates to service, it will be completely transparent. You will not notice them, you will just see new capabilities and features come into play.
  6. All tables defined in Athena are EXTERNAL tables. What does it mean to you is
