am very happy to learn that the publisher of The Art of
Happiness-which I cowrote with my old friend, the Ameri-
can psychiatrist Howard Cutler-is bringing out a tenth anni-
versary edition of the book. Those who have read the book will
know that it was the result of many hours of discussion, with
Howard representing the current scientific perspective and me
representing the Buddhist understanding of the issues pertain-
ing to mental health and human well-being. So when the book
was received well by the general public, I felt a deep sense of
satisfaction since this indicated that our labor had made some
contribution towards others' happiness and well-being. Though

PREFACE TO THE lOTH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
each of us, the two authors, came from different perspectives,
we always endeavored to bring our discussion to the basic
human level, the level where distinctions between people-
gender, race, religion, culture, and language-break down.
At this fundamental level, we are all the same; each one of us
aspires to happiness and each one of us does not wish to suf-
fer. This is our most fundamental reality. And on this level, the
problems that we each face as human beings remain the same.
Given this belief, whenever I have the opportunity to engage
with the general public, I always try to draw people's atten-
tion to this fundamental sameness of the human family and the
deeply interconnected nature of our existence and welfare. I
also share my belief that as a species we need to ground our
interaction with fellow human beings and the world around us
on recognition of these profound yet simple truths.
Today, a decade after the publication of The Art of Happi-
ness, I am heartened to see that the topic of human happiness
is attracting increasing levels of interest and serious research,
even from the scientific community. There is also a growing
recognition within the wider community, as well as a growing
body of scientific evidence, that confirms the close connection
that exists between our own states of mind and our happiness.

The phrase, "New Thought Movement" was coined in the
early 1800's to refer to a growing social movement centered around the principles
of personal development along both Spiritual and Physical lines. Unlike pure
Laws of Success and Personal Development teachings, the New Thought Movement joins
the material and energetic realms with the common belief that: "To be truly
Successful, one must do so with the highest level of personal integrity
possible."
Hugely popular in the early 1900's the movement has earned its place amongst
major world thought paradigms and has given rise to over 800 New Thought Centers
Worldwide. Although the Great Depression, WWI, and WWII stemmed its growth
through the middle half of the 20th century, the movement has again come to the
center-stage behind the tremendously popular movie, "The Secret" as well as the its
most vocal proponent Oprah Winfrey who dedicated several episodes of her show as
well as selections in her book club to the movement.
So what is The New Thought Movement?
The moniker itself has come to refer to a modern resurgence in popularity of
ancient Hermetic teachings blended and re-engineered for the modern palate. The
phrase itself has been gaining popularity for
over 150 years in both Europe and America, and finally has become a truly
worldwide phenomenon.
In practical terms, The New Thought Movement it is the popularization of
philosophical idealism, optimistic mental discipline, and the awareness of an
Omnipresent Divine Force in healing and in daily living. The movement is in its
essence a marrying of Eastern and Western insights with the commonality of Hermetic
underpinnings shared by both. Specifically:
There is a Divine force underpinning all things
This force is a force of goodness and benevolence
It is each human beings right and privilege to utilize, harmonize, and capitalize
on this divine force
It is within the rights of every human being to seek: health, abundance, wisdom,
love, life, truth, power, beauty, and peace.
A proper distinction must be made: In modern parlance Eastern Thought categorizes
both Hindu and Buddhist knowledge while Western Thought refers to the Judeo-
Christian and Pagan European / North American paradigms. The New Thought Movement
is a synthesis of these paradigms seeking to marry the two ideologies together by
focusing on what is common to the both.
In other words, The New Thought Movement takes the best of what the East and
West have to offer and combines it all based on real world trial and error.
While some New Thought adherents deeply enjoy the philosophical, the Movement
itself is more concerned with producing results in the real world.
For example, Emma Curtis Hopkins (often called the 'Mother of the New Thought
Movement") is very well known for her work in the feminist movement. In fact,
3. she is considered by many as one of the key lynchpins in securing women's right to
vote.
You see, for students of New Thought Principles, "A theory is only as good as
its ability to produce results in the real world." While flowery language and
high minded philosophies soothe and nourish the spirit, in the end it always come
downs to creating and becoming the change we long to see in the world around us.
The New Thought Movement's Future
The New Thought Movement has so delightfully influenced so much of popular
religion, success literature, and modern medicine that it is without a doubt one of
our planets most influential paradigms. The notion that, we create our
realities through our thoughts and efforts has become commonplace all over the
world. We have almost altogether forgotten that just a few generations ago we
used leeches to suck out illnesses and being born poor meant being forever poor.
Recently I saw a business lecturer begin his presentation by saying,
"This isn't some new age 'Laws of Attraction' mumbo jumbo. This is the real
deal down and dirty rules of running a business." He then went on to expertly
explain the arts of creative visualization and determinism. This instructor
taught the basic principles of the New Thought Movement after explaining that he
was teaching the traditional fundamentals of business...
This example clearly illustrates what the Future of New Thought will be.
These principles were long ago called truths. As the mainstream is more and
more taking hold of them, they are returning to their rightful place of being
regarded as truths once again.

billion dollars for Public Education using New Thought and Shamanic principles, The
