3. WHAT’S A NETWORK?
A network defined as ‘an interconnected collection of autonomous
computers’.
o AUTONOMOUS: in this context no computer on a network can start, stop or
control another.
o INTERCONNECTED : Two or more computers are interconnected if they can
exchange information.
A network may be composed of any combination of LANs, or WANs.

4. Cont..
The network becomes a powerful tool when computers communicate and
share resources with other computers on the network.
Computers on a network can act as a client or a server.
o A client is a computer that requests for resources.
o A server is a computer that controls and provides access to resources.

5. NEED FOR NETWORKING
Resource Sharing: to make all resource available to anyone or everyone
connected
Reliability: The idea is –if one crashes other can carry on. on.
e.g. if one file is deleted from a system it’s safely stored on an another on
the network.
Cost Factor:
Communication Medium: changes at one end can suddenly be sent to the
other and It brings faster and better co-operation.
Facilitate centralized management

6. Network and System administration
What is system :
what is network:
What is administration:
A system is :
o a collection of elements/components that are organized for a common purpose.
o could be a mechanical device, a computer, an office of workers a network
of humans and machines.
Administration: - it’s supervising the way that an organization or institution
It include all of the organizational aspects and also engineering issues, such
as system fault diagnosis.
It is like the medical profession, which combines checking, management and
repair of bodily functions.

7. Cont..
The term network and system administration is :
o concerns about the operational management of human computer system.
Keeping the systems up in a consistent state
Monitor performance
Babysit users, make changes on their behalf
Install, configure, upgrade, maintain
Backup, restore, disaster recovery.
In order to handle /achieve the goal it requires
Procedure

8. The human role in systems
The task of system administrator is a balancing act, it requires
patience, understanding, knowledge and experience.
Computing systems require the very best of organizational skills
and the most professional of attitudes.
We need to work with the limited resource we have, be inventive
in a crisis, and know a lot of general facts and figures about the
way computers work

11. Challenges of System Administration
System admin Not just installing system/software, also about planning and
designing an efficient community of computers.
Design a logical and efficient network.
Decide what and where services are installed.
Plan and implement security.
Provide a comfortable environment for users.
Develop ways of fixing problems and errors.
:- so that the real users will able to get quality of services.
