In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi established New Zealand as a British colony while protecting Maori ownership of their land. Maori culture is centered around spirituality, land, and ancestry. Tribes are led by chiefs and families live together in villages made up of huts. Traditional Maori arts include wood carving, weaving, and tattooing.
Myanmar culture
Myanmar has a diverse culture with influences from neighboring countries. The main religions are Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism. Traditional arts include music, dance, boxing, and chinlone (kickball). Popular festivals celebrate seasons and Buddhist holidays. Staple foods like mohinga (noodle soup) and tea leaf salad incorporate local and foreign ingredients. Major tourist attractions include pagodas, temples, and natural sites like Inle Lake. People greet with palms pressed together and follow customs like head bows to show respect.

Rice blast disease
Rice blast is one of the most damaging diseases of rice, caused by the fungi Magnaporthe oryzae and Pyricularia oryzae. It was first recorded in China in 1637 and Japan in 1704. The disease affects 85 rice producing countries worldwide and can destroy enough rice to feed 60 million people. Symptoms appear on all above-ground parts of the rice plant and include lesions on leaves, stems, panicles, and seeds. Resistance to rice blast is conferred by major resistance genes and quantitative trait loci, but new virulent pathogen strains emerge over time. Management strategies include growing resistant varieties, crop rotation, removal of residue, balanced fertilization, and fungicide application.

Forest volatile organic compounds and health benefits
- BVOCs like pinene and limonene are released from plants and make up a large portion of global VOC emissions. They play various roles in plant communication and defense.
- Inhalation of pinene and limonene from forest environments has been shown to reduce stress levels and inflammation in humans and animals by modulating cytokines and neurotransmitters. They may also benefit the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems.
- Specifically, pinene and limonene can reduce stress hormones, anxiety, and depression. They also have anti-inflammatory properties through reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting pro-inflammatory mediators. Limonene in particular modulates several inflammation pathways.

Immunological tolerance is the specific non-reactivity to an antigen due to previous exposure. Tolerance can be induced to self-antigens to prevent autoimmunity or to non-self antigens like donor tissues. Burnet and Medawar discovered that exposure to antigens early in life can induce lifelong tolerance. Tolerance occurs through central tolerance in the thymus during development and peripheral tolerance after lymphocytes leave primary lymphoid organs. Mechanisms of tolerance include clonal deletion, clonal anergy, and receptor editing.
Bacterial growth and pH
Bacteria regulate their internal pH through various mechanisms to survive in different external pH environments. The internal pH of cells is maintained near neutral through the use of buffers and ion pumps, even when the external pH is highly acidic or alkaline. Acidophilic bacteria can tolerate very low external pH levels down to 0 through specialized internal pH regulation. Neutrophilic bacteria have mechanisms to reduce effects of low external pH on their internal pH. Alkaliphilic bacteria maintain a slightly acidic internal pH despite living in high pH environments and also regulate internal pH through homeostasis.
