- #9 Different parts of the image are clickable, and show green highlighting when the user moves their mouse over the area When a portion of the body map is clicked, related topic links will appear in the box to the right. For all of the topics related to the body map, the user can scroll down to find the topic of interest. Since this is a new way to navigate the health topics, a tutorial is available by clicking the link in the upper right of the screen titled “How to use this page”. This launches a tutorial with images, text and a voice narration that goes over the details of navigating the health topics pages.
- #10 Redesigned page resulting in cleaner look Smaller A-Z navigation bar Graphical icons for body systems Removed buttons that look like ads – created new buttons and introduced some new colors Now we’ll look at the new Health Topics design! Just a few months ago, MedlinePlus introduced a new look and reorganization of the Health Topics Homepage with the addition of Body Map navigation features. The redesign of the page came about from user feedback and usability studies. Users indicated that too much page space was taken up by the old alphabetical navigation table. This required more scrolling to see the actual categories for health topics. Another important finding was that the special content areas on the right side of the screen were being ignored by users. The boxes with the graphics appeared to be “ads”, and users focused on other parts of the screen. The buttons that looked like ads were replaced with new buttons and moved to a new spot. So here you can see: The new A-Z list has been reduced to a single line. The graphical icons for body systems add visual interest and function. When clicked, these fourteen sections now have an entirely new look, which you’ll see in a minute. Boxes for special content now clearly indicate the content as clickable text boxes, as a deliberate attempt to differentiate the content from ads. As you know, MedlinePlus does not accept any advertising, but the old content boxes were very similar in placement, shape and size to ads on many commercial sites. The redesign and the placement in the lower right of the screen will help users notice the content, instead of ignoring the boxes perceived as advertising.
