This document proposes a curriculum to support international master's students in their transition to Harvard Graduate School of Education. The curriculum would consist of orientation workshops focusing on cultural identity, communication differences, and challenges students may face. Surveys and reflections would help students examine how their cultural background influences their experience and identify resources for support. By addressing cultural adjustment early, the goal is for international students to feel more integrated and able to succeed academically and socially throughout their one-year program. The curriculum aims to build community among international students and increase understanding between cultures represented at HGSE.

This article discusses an action research project aimed at better preparing student teachers for teaching in diverse classrooms. The project brought together various stakeholders to design a "Diversity Institute" integrated into a teacher preparation program. While some students developed new understandings of diversity, many only achieved a superficial awareness. This revealed the deep learning and unlearning dynamics of teacher development, and the need for more time exploring diversity issues in teacher education.

Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator who developed a problem-posing approach to teaching adults. His approach encouraged critical thinking by having students analyze social and political forces that affect their lives. He believed education should empower students to challenge inequality and take action for change. The document outlines Freire's teaching philosophy and methods, including listening to students, facilitating dialogue, problem-posing through questions, and using "codes" or materials to represent issues for discussion. The goal is for education to be a two-way process that develops critical thinking skills and leads students to consider actions they can take to improve their situations.

Ms Elise Luhr Dietrichson successfully completed the Bachelor Degree Program in
Development Studies at the University of Oslo in June 2013. I have known Ms Dietrichson
since January 2013, as a student at the Final Course in Development Studies (UTV3091
Avslutningsemne i utviklingsstudier). The last semester of our study program includes
lectures and seminars on thematic and methodological issues, and the writing of a
bachelor thesis. Our students have the option to carry out fieldwork in a country of the
South, and to write their theses based on fieldwork research. Students choose the country
and topic on their own, and develop a proposal to be reviewed and approved by the
Program. Upon their return, they have to deliver a fieldwork report.
Ms Dietrichson wrote her bachelor thesis on the role of NGOs in processes of participation
and exclusion of the poor in India. She addressed this issue from the perspective of
deepening democracy, focusing on practices within specific citizenship and urban
governance programs. Her thesis is based on fieldwork carried out in March-April last year
in Bangalore, where she collected primary and secondary data. She conducted in-depth
interviews with representatives, employees and field workers of major NGOs actively
involved in the programs.
Ms Dietrichson has successfully demonstrated the ability to pursue her own initiatives, and
to apply her academic knowledge to the design and development of a specific research
project. Fieldwork is demanding both at the academic and personal level, and Ms
Dietrichson has demonstrated the capacity to reflect on the thematic and methodological
issues involved. She has demonstrated as well to have the interpersonal skills and cultural
sensitivity necessary to carry out fieldwork in a country much different from her own.
Ms Dietrichson has been a committed student, both inside and outside the classroom. She
is a highly motivated and self-driven student with much to contribute both in group work
and class discussions. She takes her academic work seriously, and has the capacity to
critically reflect on various aspects of the issue at hand. She works systematically and has
the perseverance and skills to get the job done, with excellent results.
Outside the classroom, Ms Dietrichson has been much appreciated by her peers as an
active member of the Student Council (Programutvalget) at our Program, both for her
good organizing and communication skills as well as for her openness and generosity.

Last but not least, she is an outspoken student who is also receptive to the ideas of others.
For all these reasons, I endorse Ms Dietrichson’s academic and professional prospects
without hesitation.
