motivation

Identify an AR technology fit for practical deployment in
     the design industry now.

 Objectives

Immediate benefits to users without excessive reliance on dedicated
     hardware systems.

Ready for implementation now (technology requirements).

Non disruptive in terms of practise and culture, with particular emphases on a
     low learning curve.

problem

Portability of 3D design models in context of presentation (critique,
     client/stakeholder negotiation).

Intimidation by 3D software interfaces experienced by non-designer parties
     involved in the process.

Single user orientation of current interface designs.

 Proposed solution
ARToolkit based 3D design model preview, including limited design element
     manipulation.

Intended to be used by various stakeholders in the design critique and
     evaluation process.

rationale / hypothesis

 Natural mode of operation supports the use by people not familiar with the
skills related to navigation and manipulation of 3D design models.

 The simplicity of implementation and usage is complementary to ad-hock
introduction in test cases by design practitioners.

 The key usability criteria include; favourable ergonomics and a minimal
impact on the user's immediate working and communication environment.

 Exploits proprioception to provide a high degree of precision.
(Sense of the position and orientation of the body and its parts.)

implementation

 ARToolkit based fiducial marker cards representing individual elements
and variants of the 3D design model manipulated directly (hands-on) by
     participants.

 Video camera(s) fixed on a tripod to support ARToolkit operation.

 The requirement for high fidelity display and face-to-face communication
between multiple participants favour the desktop/projector devices,
     rather than HMDs.

 VRML provides a portable cross-platform format suitable for demonstration
     of 3D design models.

benefits of card-based tangible interface

 Intuitive operation by untrained operators is feasible due to the obvious
relationship between the markers and resulting manipulations.
 Efficiencies gained through a real-world frame of reference and the direct
mapping between hand and object motion including precise ‘eyes off’
     interaction.
 A degree of haptic feedback is provided to the user by the marker cards and
their physical behaviour in relation to the real world environment.
 Two handed manipulation is supported.
 Simultaneous interaction by multiple participants is possible.
 Readily integrates into boardroom situations, including portable, onsite and
     outdoor scenarios.
