“The sun shineth, the land is green and

8. Coat of Arms
The Jamaican national motto is „Out of
Many One People‟, based on the
population‟s multi-racial roots.
The motto is represented on the Coat of
Arms, showing a male and female member
of the Taino tribe standing on either side of
a shield which bears a red cross with five
golden pineapples.
The crest shows a Jamaican crocodile
mounted on the Royal Helmet of the British
Monarchy and mantling.
9. National Bird
The doctor bird or swallow tail
humming bird, is the national bird
of Jamaica.
It lives only in Jamaica.
The doctor bird‟s feathers have no
counterpart in the entire bird
population.
The mature male has two long tails
which stream behind him when he
flies.
10. National Fruit
Ackee is the national fruit of
Jamaica.
A component of the national dish –
ackee and codfish.
The ackee tree grows up to 50ft and
bears large red and yellow fruit 3-4
in. long.
When ripe the fruit burst into
sections revealing shiny black round
seeds on top of a yellow aril which
is partially edible.
11. National Flower
Lignum Vitae is the national flower
of Jamaican.
Lignum Vitae comes from Latin and
means “wood of life”.
In Jamaica it grows best in the dry
woodland along the north and south
coasts of the island.
The plant is extremely ornamental,
producing an attractive blue flower
and orange-yellow fruit, while its
crown has an attractive rounded
shape.
12. National Tree
Blue Mahoe is the national tree of
Jamaica.
The name mahoe is derived from a
Carib Indian word.
The „blue‟ refers to blue-green streaks in
the polished wood, giving it a
distinctive appearance.
It is indigenous to the island and grows
quite rapidly, often attaining 66ft or
more in height.
The tree has a straight trunk, broad
green leaves and hibiscus-like flowers.

16. Marcus Garvey

on August 17, 1887.
• Started a small newspaper
called The Watchman in 1910.

19. Nanny of the Maroons
• The only female national
hero.
• The leader of the Maroons
during the 1700s.
• Known to be an
outstanding military leader.

20. Samuel Sharpe
• Born in Montego Bay, St.
James in 1801.
• Grew up as a house slave.
• He was educated by his
master and became his
master‟s right-hand man.
• The main instigator of the
Slave Rebellion in 1831.
