This document discusses the challenges facing Maine's working waterfront communities. As Maine's coast becomes more suburban and urbanized, access to the water for commercial fishing and other marine trades is declining. Only about half of the saltwater access points currently support commercial fishing, and many of these are privately owned and vulnerable to conversion. The goals of the project discussed are to describe what residents value in working waterfront communities and want to protect, inform newcomers about the working nature of these communities, and celebrate working waterfronts for their economic and cultural contributions. Reactions to brochures created for the project have been positive. Contact information is provided for organizations supporting Maine's working waterfronts.
