USRC: Hybrid Quadplane Search and Rescue Missions Luis Landivar (Team Lead), MS student,, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, North Carolina A&T State University Abdollah Homaifar (Advisor), Samuel P. Langley Distinguished Professor, PI Secure and Safe Assured Autonomy(ULI) , Challenge Develop Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) that provide aid to first responders by: - Providing location of lost people - Detecting personnel in RGB/Thermal/Night Vision - Speeding up response time with persons needing assistance - Delivering aid equipment Hybrid Quadplane: Tilt-Rotor Detecting and locating civilians Expected Impacts - Improving Rescue times - Detecting Individuals in Thermal/RGB/Night vision - Autonomous capabilities for ease of flight - Cost effective & energy efficient for repeated use - Package Delivery capabilities - Geolocation of individuals - Vertical Take-off Capabilities (VTOL) - 1.5 hour flight time & speed of 26 m/s for covering large areas of terrain Partners and/or Participants ● NASA USRC ● Secure and Safe Assured Autonomy, (ULI) ● NC A&T University ● Lapetus Life Event Solutions ● Boeing Solution An all in one solution to locate lost civilians in large areas by: - Detecting using off-board Neural Networks & locating individuals in real time - Dropping supply packages once having detected civilians - Loitering in area until first responders arrive - Continue mission to locate other civilians in Region Of Interest (ROI) Thrust 4 & 6 were achieved by: ○ quiet and affordable vertical air lift vehicle ○ Safety features: low battery, radio disconnect, Auto Return -To-Launch landings ○ Autonomy: Detecting humans, Waypoints, Auto Land, Auto Takeoff Results We’ve developed two different types of Autonomous Hybrid Quad Planes capable of detecting humans, identifying their locations and dropping supplying packages. Hybrid Quadplane: Quadplane (4+1) Package Delivery Next Steps Communicate with local first responders and get possible funding to make this technology commercial to all firefighters and policemen in the US.

NASA USRC Hybrid Quadplane Search and Rescue Missions

Langley Distinguished Professor, PI Secure and Safe Assured Autonomy(ULI) , Challenge Develop Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) that provide aid to first responders by: - Providing location of lost people - Detecting personnel in RGB/Thermal/Night Vision - Speeding up response time with persons needing assistance - Delivering aid equipment Hybrid Quadplane: Tilt-Rotor Detecting and locating civilians Expected Impacts - Improving Rescue times - Detecting Individuals in Thermal/RGB/Night vision - Autonomous capabilities for ease of flight - Cost effective & energy efficient for repeated use - Package Delivery capabilities - Geolocation of individuals - Vertical Take-off Capabilities (VTOL) - 1.5 hour flight time & speed of 26 m/s for covering large areas of terrain Partners and/or Participants ● NASA USRC ● Secure and Safe Assured Autonomy, (ULI) ● NC A&T University ● Lapetus Life Event Solutions ● Boeing Solution An all in one solution to locate lost civilians in large areas by: - Detecting using off-board Neural Networks & locating individuals in real time - Dropping supply packages once having detected civilians - Loitering in area until first responders arrive - Continue mission to locate other civilians in Region Of Interest (ROI) Thrust 4 & 6 were achieved by: ○ quiet and affordable vertical air lift vehicle ○ Safety features: low battery, radio disconnect, Auto Return -To-Launch landings ○ Autonomy: Detecting humans, Waypoints, Auto Land, Auto Takeoff Results We’ve developed two different types of Autonomous Hybrid Quad Planes capable of detecting humans, identifying their locations and dropping supplying packages. Hybrid Quadplane: Quadplane (4+1) Package Delivery Next Steps Communicate with local first responders and get possible funding to make this technology commercial to all firefighters and policemen in the US.
