An electrolytic silver-ion generator has been developed to control microbial contamination in the Apollo spacecraft's water systems. Individual self-contained units require no external power or control, are small in size, light in weight, and have no interface requirements, allowing incorporation at various locations. The sterilizers produce 50-200 parts per billion of silver ions to sterilize water flow, with concentration adjusted to flow rate. Laboratory tests demonstrated complete kill of bacteria within 8 hours using initial concentrations over 500,000 organisms per milliliter. Methods to treat aluminum piping were also developed to minimize silver ion losses and enhance sterilization effectiveness.
