Narrative Report: Catch-Up Friday Reading
The Department of Education (DepEd) organized an event called "Catch-Up Friday Reading" at
Guiling Coliling National High School. This initiative aimed to enhance the reading competency and
comprehension skills of the students. The event saw active participation from all students, with the
assistance of the school's SSLG officers, who provided support to the teachers in assessing the students'
reading abilities.
The Catch-Up Friday Reading activity began in the morning, with all students of Guiling Coliling
National High School assembling in their respective classroom. The SSLG officers, along with the
teachers, formed small groups consisting of students from different grade levels. These groups were
designed to create a conducive environment for interactive learning and assessment. Each group had a
dedicated teacher and SSLG officer assigned to it. The students were provided with a selection of
reading materials tailored to their respective grade levels. The materials ranged from storybooks,
articles, and informative texts, ensuring that students could engage with texts appropriate for their
reading abilities.
The SSLG officers, trained in supporting classroom activities, played a vital role in assisting the
teachers during the assessment process. They guided the students in understanding the texts, clarified
doubts, and encouraged active participation. The SSLG officers also provided one-on-one assistance to
students who required additional support, ensuring that no student was left behind. The teachers
employed various strategies to assess the students' reading competency and comprehension. They
conducted reading exercises, asked comprehension questions, and encouraged students to share their
thoughts and insights about the texts. The SSLG officers actively participated in these discussions,
fostering a collaborative learning environment and encouraging students to express their ideas freely.
The Catch-Up Friday Reading activity continued throughout the day, with students rotating to different
stations within their assigned groups. This approach allowed them to explore a variety of reading
materials and engage in diverse reading experiences. By the end of the day, students had gained
exposure to different genres and improved their reading skills through active participation in the
activity.
The Catch-Up Friday Reading activity organized by DepEd at Guiling Coliling National High School
was a resounding success. The active participation of all students, along with the assistance of SSLG
officers, created a vibrant and engaging learning environment. The event not only enhanced the
students' reading competency and comprehension skills but also fostered a love for reading among
them. DepEd's initiative to organize such activities demonstrates its commitment to promoting quality
education and ensuring the holistic development of students. The Catch-Up Friday Reading activity
served as a testament to the power of collaborative efforts between teachers, SSLG officers, and
students in creating a nurturing educational environment.
