Narrative theory
Pieces I will be writing about will be my book- We’re going on a wolf hunt and
Transformers age of extinction.
The Hero: in my story the hero will actually be all my pigs as they are all
going out on the same quest to achieve finding a wolf although they may not
be heroic in the sense of fighting off the wolf they are still the heroes that are
set out on finding the wolf.
In Transformers the use a more traditional role of a hero where Cade Yeager
goes out of his way to protect the world from the Decepticons which are the
villains in this film.
The Villain: The villain is the character in the story that tries to stop the hero
in their task or completing their goal.
The villain in my book would be the wolf as he tries to catch the family of pigs
and stop them getting home this will make the audience start to turn against
the villain in a hope that the heroes are all safe.
The Princess/Prize: the princess or prize is something that the hero looks to
achieve or find in the story this could be to get him/hers love back and for
them to get married in the end or to find a big chest of money that they were
looking for.
In my book the main prize would be finding the wolf which they end up
achieving but after this they have to run home and get home safely this would
be their second goal in the story although it isn’t the main one.
The Donor: The donor in a story is someone that gives or assists the hero in
some sort of way so that they can continue to complete their final goal. This
can also be the helper.
In Transformers the donor would be Shane as he turns up when the Hero is in
trouble to drive him away so that he can survive and continue his quest.
The Helper: This is someone in the story that is a companion to the hero and
will assist them in certain scenarios they will often have strong personalities
and qualities that stands out in comparison to the hero which might get them
in trouble sometimes or assist them in other times.
The Helper in Transformers will be Tessa Yeager, which is the heroes
daughter she is a character throughout the full film, which will help the hero
out when he needs help.
The Princess’ Father: this is usually the father of the girl or princess in a
story he will be there to push the hero on to earn his trust so that he can
marry the Princess or daughter in the end.
In the movie Transformers Shane the Donor/helper is the one trying to earn
the Fathers trust, as the Father is in fact the main hero in the story. After
helping the hero throughout the movie he eventually earns his trust in the end.
The False Hero: The false hero in a story will try and act like a hero but later
on in the story you will find he will try to go against the hero and act as a sort
of villain within the story. Usually a respected character until their true side of
them comes out.
In Transformers the false hero would be Harold Attinger as he claims to just
want to live in a robot free world and says the robot left peacefully but is in
fact teaming up with more robots to hunt the remaining down and to kill them.
The Dispatcher: the dispatcher is the person within the story that sends the
hero away on a quest or adventure, this will usually be from family or the
prize’ family but in some cases it could be different people from within the
story.
In my book the dispatcher is the dad pig this is because it is his idea to go on
a wolf hunt and then his family come with him.
Equilibrium: The equilibrium in my story is where the family decide to go out
on a wolf hunt, this will be the first page in my book when they start the chant
unaware of the obstacles to come.
Disequilibrium: my family in the book stumble upon a cave in their adventure
and inside the cave lives a wolf they go in and disturb him then the wolf
chases them back through all the obstacles they have just ventured through.
New Equilibrium: the new equilibrium in the book is when the pigs escape
the wolf and end up safely in their home. This is where they decide they aren’t
going on a wolf hunt again and their life returns back to normal.
Binary Opposition: this is the idea that in every story there are two opposite
sides the come together in conflict. In my book the opposites were predator
vs. prey this is because the pigs and wolves clashed stereotypically and the
wolf tried eating the pigs again. This theory is understandable for some things
but I think for a lot of things it might not come into play like if there were no
oppositions inside the story.
Types Of Structures: My book would be a closed structure this is because
the book starts with them going out on a adventure and then ends with the
adventure over and the family home safe. This would mean my book is single
strand as it is just one story even though it has potential to carry on into a
different adventure it would really work. My book would also be linear, this is
because the story progresses in order and is understandable to follow they
over some each obstacle as they reach them. This makes the book easy to
follow as there is no sequence changed in the book. In a way my book could
potentially be realist as they are obstacles and events and family could come
across but it is also non-realist as they are pigs and pigs don’t dress in human
clothes and go on adventures.
