Andrew Godwins 7 Features of Music Videos
1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. (e.g. stage performance in metal
videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with
images. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of
the visual reflects that of the music. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the
artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual
style).
5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors,
stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their work (a
visual style)
7. There are often intertextual reference (to films, TV program mmes, other music
videos etc).
Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. (e.g. stage
performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl
band, aspiration in Hip Hop).
• Our music video will be based on the song Pharoahs by sBTRKT which
we would describe under the Electro Dance Music genre. We hope to
involve slight dance moves within sections of the video, allowing the
genre of Electro Dance Music to be shown.
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics
are represented with images. (either illustrative, amplifying,
contradicting).
Our planned music video has the idea of being amplifying. This is
because the there will be no visuals that link to the lyrics directly
however the band members will be singing the lyrics throughout the
song. We could also say that our planned music video will have
essentially contradicting visuals to the lyrics. By using timelapses of city
views these do not match the lyrics in anyway and hence contradicts
them.
There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone
and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music.
(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
We hope there are several links to the visuals and the music. We plan
to have many jump cuts into different shots to match the tempo of the
song at that present time, for example at the start of the song the same
shots a repeated over and over again as the tempo gets quicker the
shots get shorter and the jump cuts to the next shot get quicker
emphasising the tempo of the music and therefore creating a
relationship between the music and visuals. Another relationship
between the music and visuals we hope to make is through the band
members dancing in rhythm to the music and hence creating the link.
The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the
artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual
style).
• We plan to meet the demands of record labels as we are planning to
involve many close ups of the artists’ features. By doing this we
believe it will create emphasis of the band throughout the song and
give each member their own time to feature also.
There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens
within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly
voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
• Although there are only girls that feature within the music video we
do not intend to refer to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic
treatment of the female body. Although we may change there mind
as this may be carried out throughout the styling of the band member
at the current time it is not planned to do so. However it some may
say it is through the make up of the artists which may be seen
wearing red lips. This is a promiscuous colour and therefore would
make them look sexualised slightly.
The artist may develop motifs or iconography that
recur across their work (a visual style)
• This is the bands first music video and therefore they will not have
developed any motifs or iconography that recur across their work.
There are often intertextual reference (to films,
TV programs, other music videos etc).
Due to using existing music videos for inspiration for our own there will
be intertextual reference within our music videos. For example we
feature a similar car scene as the songs; Young thug- bestfriend and
Grimes -Genesis does hence holding a intertextual reference to it.
