I. Introduction
From time to time people have wondered why reading is important. There seem so
many other things to do with one’s time1
. Reading is important for a variety of reasons.
We will look at some of those fundamental reason which will be stated here in, but it is
important to realize that struggling with vital reading skills is not a sign a low intelligent,
albeit many highly intelligent people have struggled with reading, although, when
properly taught most people can learn to read easily and quickly.
Thus, the Reading into Writing Speaking and Listening students of the college of
graduate studies of Samar College, Inc., Catbalogan City had plotted and prosed to
conduct Corrective Reading with the intellectual conspiracy and technical assistance
of Maam Ma. Linda S. Legarse,Ph.D, EPS II of City Division. All these savor to
inculcate the young and naïve mind of student to which the program was launched at
Pangdan Elementary School, Brgy. Pangdan Catbalogan City.
Partly of the said activity is to let students know that, a book is a storehouse of
knowledge and has several advantages. In our society we have friends and foes. Even
the so-called friends can cheat us in times. But books are our never-failing friends.
Those who can read books are lucky indeed. A reader of books forgets his worries for
the time being and finds pleasure from it. Money cannot buy peace of mind. Power
cannot heal our sorrows. Books can, when all other fail. As stated further that, books
plays an important role in in our life. Books are our friends in a real sense. They
demand nothing from us. They give us plenty of joy. We also learn a lot from
them. They take us into a different world of imagination. Good books improve our
standard of living. They tone up our intellectual taste they make our outlook broad.
They console us when we are depressed. Books encourage us when we are
defeated. They inspire us to work hard with hope and courage. They remove our
ignorance and add to our knowledge. Books enrich our experience and sharpen our
intellect. Thus a good book is our true friend. We should develop a healthy habit of
reading books. We must select the books carefully. We should read only good
books. Reading good books has many advantages. Bad books spoil our character.

2. They develop unhealthy habits in us. We should follow children and young men to read
only good books. They should act upon the lessons they learn from such books. A good
book is our ‘friend, philosopher and guide’. Everybody wants pleasure in life. Man
wants wealth and power for the sake of pleasure. He wants to have good health so that
he may enjoy life more and more. In the modern age man seeks pleasure everywhere.
All the discoveries and inventions of science are made for human happiness. Even
saints s live a life of suffering in this world for divine pleasure in the other world. We
can get pleasure from various things. Spots, games and films are some of them. But
the reading of books gives us the real pleasure of life. When we read good book, we
forget ourselves. We do not remember the care and anxieties of the world. We are sent
into a land of beauty, imagination and happiness. So, books are the source of the
greatest pleasure in life. Well-read man is loved by all. He is a store house of
information. He knows something of everything.2 A well read man can be very good
talker. He can entertain us with his good talks. He shows his worth at a social function.
He can talk about many things. So, we do not feel dullness and boredom in the
company of such persons. This is another advantage of reading books2
March 19, 2016 marks a success for the launching of Corrective Reading Project and
Coastal Clean –Up , a two in one activity at Pangdan Elementary School, Brgy.
Pangdan, Catbalogan City, with its theme: “ Developing Pupils’ Reading and Creative
Thinking”.
II. Rationale of Activity
Reading is fundamental to function in today’s society. There are mainly adults who
cannot read well enough to understand the instruction on a medicine bottle. That is a
scary thought-especially for their children. Filling out application becomes impossible
without help. Reading road ma or warning signs is difficult. Even following a map
becomes a chore. Day-to-day activities that many people take for granted become a
source of frustration, anger and fear. Poor reading skills increases the amount of time it
takes to absorb and react in the workplace. A person is limited in what they can
accomplish without good reading and comprehension skill.3
Reading is important because it develops the mind. The mind is a muscle. It needs
exercise. Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its ability.
Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language skills. It also helps
them learn to listen. Everybody wants to talk, but few can really listen. Lack of listening
skills can result in major misunderstandings which can lead to job loss, marriage

3. breakup, and other disasters - small and great. Reading helps children even adults,
focus on what someone else is communicating.
Living up with a theme: “Developing Pupils’ Reading and Creative Thinking”, the
Students, Officers of the Graduate Studies and the entire Samar Collegian, of the
Samar College have paused and wave on its objective and target. One day before the
slated schedule, the Samar Collegian and its Family donated reading materials for the
realization of the above stated objective.
During the actual activity, a short program was set, to which invocation was led by
Maam Rene Imogene R. Obingayan, Graduate Student and a faculty member of
Tenani ES, followed by showing the love of the country under the baton of Maam
Michelle C. Matilla, Graduate Student and a faculty member of Daram ES, followed by
the warm welcome of Pangdan ES, Teacher-in-Charge Maam Carmencita A. Aranaz.
Albeit, the selected Pangdan ES, students showed their naïve talents as part of their
endearment and warm welcome, moving their jaegers on its wondrous music,
afterwards the corrective reading mentor, Maam Ma. Linda S. Legarse,Ph.D share her
inspirational message, and take the time in appreciating the presence of the faculty
members of Pangdan ES, and its excited students whom will be the benefited to the
said activity, the active Barangay Council was also given due appreciation as to the
support and time extended in witnessing for the success of the said activity. Moreover,
the Graduate students of Samar College, Inc. also share their talents as they move to
the to glimpse of melodious sound track of a cheer leader, and after which it should be
supposed to followed by the turn-over of the reading materials, by the Dean of College
of Graduate Studies, Dr. Nimfa Torremoro, but due to uncontrolled circumstances, the
Dr. Torremoro, was able to come and grace the said activity, instead the EPS II, of City
Division do honor. The one hundred fifty three (153) books and reading materials was
turn-over to the recipients of the corrective reading students of Pandan ES.
Maam Nimfa Castillo-Ayon, Teacher III of Pangdan ES, also expressed her motherly
appreciation, on the conduct of the said activity, she herself stressed that the reading
materials will be a great help to the struggling readers, not only to the struggling
readers but also to those students who found to be a book lover., “ Magagamit iton
nira nga barasahon yana nga bakasyon, para ma enhanced an ira reading ability
and skills. Nalilipay ak kay nagkayaon project an Samar College nga sugad,
Salamat kan Dr. Legarse, nga saiyo tanan” Mrs. Ayon said.
The one hundred fifty three reading materials and books, was equally distributed to the
different grade level of the school, from kinder to grade six., the name being prepared
by their respective advisers PES was call on stage to hand over the book, based on
their reading choice.

4. After the distribution of the books, each Graduate student, is being tasked to hold a
reading activity, draw an assessment after the reading. Student will be assess
according to the reading materials, that they have on their possession.
The awarding of a plaque of appreciation to the respective stakeholders, and of course
to the School recipients of the corrective reading was also plotted. Meanwhile, the
Officers of the Reading into Writing Speaking and Listening, had awarded Dr. Ma.
Linda S. Legarse, a plaque of appreciation, for her unwavering support as mentor of
the corrective reading. It was also Hon. Ernesto B. Obingyan, the Punong Barangay of
Pangdan, who formally close the program.
The coastal clean-up take for 3hours, and as part of the said activity it was therefore
concluded a total success due to the participation by the teaching staff of Pangdan
ES, and the council of Barangay Pangdan.
III. Conclusion / Recommendation
It has to be remembered that the choice of books in often dictated by the needs of
one’s vocation. Everyone must, if there is any desire for self-improvement, read books
that convey the latest information on the subject in which he deals. The man who has
stopped reading as soon as he begins to earn, may soon find that he has ceased to
each according to his growing needs. For specialized knowledge of one’s vocation is
sure to increase efficiency and general usefulness.4
As in other matter of books, what is good for one man may not be so for another man.
Thus no reading could be compulsory prescribed for all manner of men. Surrounded by
books as the student is, he is more like to be attracted to those books which on his
prescribed course of study than general reading. As one’s interests grow, tastes are
more specialized and books are picked up for a variety of reasons not always
connected with one’s vocation5
.
The program is in partial success due to its time constrain, it is beyond exceptional, if
phases of plans was in detailed, as a matter of fact these process can be a bridge to
a better goal for a more and intensified activity in reading, to enhance the reading
skills of the struggling students.
More so if every school has its own corrective reading implementation plan, based on
its underlying objective, to which state in enhancing the reading skills of the identified
students enrolled in every school, To enhance the reading skills of the identified

5. students using: -innovative teaching styles -varied reading materials- authentic
materials on pronunciation and articulation of English.6
