Napoleon became the consul of France in 1799 and faced a European coalition including Russia, Great Britain, and Austria in war. After a brief peace treaty in 1802, war broke out again in 1803 with Britain and other nations joining the coalition against France. Through military victories, Napoleon was then able to create a new European order and spread the principles of the French Revolution.
