A study was conducted in Morogoro, Tanzania to assess the effect of treated wastewater as an alternative source of irrigation water and nutrients for rice. Wastewater was sourced from a local wastewater Stabilization Ponds and cleaned through a Constructed Wetland. Four treatments namely, (i) Waste water (WW) only (ii) WW + NPK (iii) Tap water only (iv) Tap water + NPK were tested in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 4 replicates. Rice, variety Saro 5 was planted in August 2013.Data was collected on physical-chemical and biological qualities of the WW, and soils, yield and yield components. Analysis of variance and Least Significant Difference (LSD) on yield were conducted (p≤0.05) using INSTAT software. WW had alkaline pH of 8.2 and acceptable levels of physical-chemical-biological components. WW only treated rice resulted in higher yields over non-treated rice. The combination of WW and NPK was not as effective especially for flowering, grain size and total yield indicative of nutrients overloading. Tap water only treated rice yielded 1.3 tons/ha while WW treated rice yielded 5.44 ton/ha mostly through promotion of higher number of fertile tillers while a combination of WW and NPK depressed yield potential to only 1.7 ton/ha. Effectiveness of WW for irrigation is acknowledged.

In Tanzania, only 4% of the population has water piped to their homes, so most must collect water from unsafe, open sources like rivers and lakes. This task usually falls to women and children, which can prevent school or work. This study analyzed fluoride contamination in drinking water sources in 270 villages in Mulbagal taluk, Karnataka. Water samples from bore wells were tested for fluoride levels. 48 villages had fluoride levels above the permissible limit of 1ppm, and 15 villages had critical levels over 3ppm. The results were mapped to identify areas of contamination. High fluoride consumption can cause dental and skeletal fluorosis in humans. The study recommends raising awareness, identifying uncontaminated water sources, and promoting rainwater harvesting to address the problem.

Iodine status measured as urinary iodine excretion in school children has improved in recent years in Indonesia, including Central Java province. However, the Total Goiter Rate (TGR) in the Ngargoyoso sub-district was 51.0% in 2010.The objective of this study was to identify environmental factors that may affect iodine deficiency in this sub-district. An ecological perspective was used as a conceptual framework to conduct cross sectional studies between 2010 and 2015. Data on Total goiter rate was collected from 800 schoolchildren aged 8-10 years using palpation of the thyroid gland. The urinary iodine excretion was carried out by using acid digestion Sandell- Kolthoff reaction on 371 preschool children and 153 pregnant women. Iodized salt was determined by Iodina test ™ (Kimia Farma, Indonesia). Hemoglobin concentration was measured by Sahli Method. A direct method with 2% eosin in alcohol was used to look for soil helminthes eggs. Microbiological examination was done on drinking water to find out Escherichia coli. TGR in school children was 51.0%. Urinary iodine excretion (UIE) < 100µg/L in preschool children was 23.3%. UIE <150µg/L among pregnant women was 54.3%. Iodine was not detected in the drinking water, but contaminated by Escherichia coli. Soil helminthes infestation i.e. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura or Necator americanus were found in 46% of feces examined. The prevalence of anemia in school children were 94%. Environmental factors may influence iodine deficiency in Ngargoyoso sub-district.

It identifies 7 major river basins in Tanzania - Lake Tanganyika, Lake Victoria, Lake Nyasa, Rufiji River, Pangani River, Ruaha River, and Ruvu and Wami Rivers. It examines the management structures and challenges facing integrated water resources management in Tanzania. Some key challenges identified are population growth putting pressure on water resources, internal and external conflicts over water bodies, low budget allocation to water resources, and ideologies that place most responsibility for water conservation on women. The document recommends increasing government budget for water, supporting indigenous water harvesting methods, and improving cooperation between formal and informal institutions in water management.
Fluoride Contamination in Ground water in Mulbagal Taluk (Ashwin's report)biomeshubha
This study analyzed fluoride contamination in drinking water sources in 270 villages in Mulbagal taluk, Karnataka. Water samples from bore wells were tested for fluoride levels. 48 villages had fluoride levels above the permissible limit of 1ppm, and 15 villages had critical levels over 3ppm. The results were mapped to identify areas of contamination. High fluoride consumption can cause dental and skeletal fluorosis in humans. The study recommends raising awareness, identifying uncontaminated water sources, and promoting rainwater harvesting to address the problem.
1. A Link NCA was conducted in four municipalities in Masbate Province, Philippines between 2014-2015. Due to a typhoon, the quantitative survey had to be stopped and data from a previous UNICEF survey was used instead.
2. Key findings identified poor sanitation infrastructure (hypothesis K), open defecation (hypothesis J), and poor liquid/solid waste management (hypothesis L and M) as major contributors to undernutrition.
3. Participants reported issues with open defecation due to lack of toilets and public latrines. They also faced challenges with solid and liquid waste management due to lack of disposal systems and garbage collection.
Iodine Deficiency in a Mountainous Area of Central Java, Indonesia in the Per...Premier Publishers
Iodine status measured as urinary iodine excretion in school children has improved in recent years in Indonesia, including Central Java province. However, the Total Goiter Rate (TGR) in the Ngargoyoso sub-district was 51.0% in 2010.The objective of this study was to identify environmental factors that may affect iodine deficiency in this sub-district. An ecological perspective was used as a conceptual framework to conduct cross sectional studies between 2010 and 2015. Data on Total goiter rate was collected from 800 schoolchildren aged 8-10 years using palpation of the thyroid gland. The urinary iodine excretion was carried out by using acid digestion Sandell- Kolthoff reaction on 371 preschool children and 153 pregnant women. Iodized salt was determined by Iodina test ™ (Kimia Farma, Indonesia). Hemoglobin concentration was measured by Sahli Method. A direct method with 2% eosin in alcohol was used to look for soil helminthes eggs. Microbiological examination was done on drinking water to find out Escherichia coli. TGR in school children was 51.0%. Urinary iodine excretion (UIE) < 100µg/L in preschool children was 23.3%. UIE <150µg/L among pregnant women was 54.3%. Iodine was not detected in the drinking water, but contaminated by Escherichia coli. Soil helminthes infestation i.e. Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura or Necator americanus were found in 46% of feces examined. The prevalence of anemia in school children were 94%. Environmental factors may influence iodine deficiency in Ngargoyoso sub-district.

15. Endamaghan is among the two villages of ENDAMAGH ward allocated on the Western
part of Karatu District, in Arusha Region. A distance of 100 kilometers is to be covered to
reach this village from Karatu Township. It takes six hours to reach this village through
public transport due to the unstable road infrastructure and it took two days to
accomplish this task from 17th
-19th
November 2016.
This village is a beautiful place which is surrounded by Ngorongoro national park on its
North-West part and Lake Eyasi on South-East. Most residents of this village are
Hadzabe, Tindiga, Iraq and other government officers such as Teachers, health officers.
Most dwellers are Cultivators, pastoralists and Hunters. Also social needs are located in
this village like Endamaghan primary school and its Health center as well as Tap water
and Trench (Small River) water. These are the only sources of water for human,
animals, and farm irrigation. Samples of water were taken from those sources of water
(and tested in Arusha):

Further tests are needed if desired – for bacteria and other chemicals
Since waterborne diseases are reported, there must be bacterial contaminations.
But Nanofilter can remove all microorganisms and other chemicals contaminants.

The health officer was interviewed about different
waterborne diseases affecting the Endamaghan
community. The officer reported that Typhoid, Amoeba,
and Warms are a serious concern, particularly for children
up to age 15.
