History Of Indian Railways
• In 1832 the first proposal of Indian Railway was discussed in
Madras.
• The first non passenger in India 1837 between Red hills to
Madras.
• First passenger train ran between the two station Mumbai
(Bori Bunder station) and Thane ,covering a distance of 34
km on April 16 1853
• It carried a total of 400 people. This passenger line was built
and operated by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR).
• On 15th August, 1854, the 2nd train service commenced
between Howrah and Hubli .
• In the 1925 the first railway budget was presented in India.
• On 3rd February 1925 the first electric passenger
train in India ran between Victoria terminal and kurl
on.
• In 1951 the railway was reorganised into regional
zones.
• In 1954, the first rail bridge was built between
Thane and Kalyan.
• On 24th October 1984 Calcutta Metro was the
country’s first rapid-transit line.
• India’s first metro train ran from Esplanade to
Bhowanipur (presently known as Netaji bhawan
station) in Calcutta.
• In 1986, computerized ticketing and reservations
were introduced in New Delhi.
• In 1990, the first self-printing ticket machine
(SPTM) was introduced in New Delhi.
• On 3rd August 2002 Indian railway started online
ticketing and reservation.
• Indian Railway declared that India’s entire rail
network would be electrified by 2024
• Indian Railway has a glorious past of more than170
years serving the nation.

Silent features of Indian railway
• Indian Railways is the fourth largest Railway network in the
world after US, Russia and China.
• It runs about 20,000 trains everyday.
• It carrying more than 2.5 crores passengers and 2.8 million
tonnes of freight every day.
• More than 12000 passenger trains which run across the
country every day, cover a distance which is more than 4
times the distance between earth and moon.
• It is largest railway system in World under one management
system.
• Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai has been given status
of world heritage site by UNESCO in 2004.
• Three of the lines, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the
Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and the Kalka–Shimla Railway,
are collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage
Site in the year 1999 under the name “Mountain Railways of
India”.

History Of Indian Railways • In 1832 the first proposal of Indian Railway was discussed in Madras. • The first non passenger in India 1837 between Red hills to Madras. • First passenger train ran between the two station Mumbai (Bori Bunder station) and Thane ,covering a distance of 34 km on April 16 1853 • It carried a total of 400 people. This passenger line was built and operated by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR). • On 15th August, 1854, the 2nd train service commenced between Howrah and Hubli . • In the 1925 the first railway budget was presented in India.
  • 4. • On 3rd February 1925 the first electric passenger train in India ran between Victoria terminal and kurl on. • In 1951 the railway was reorganised into regional zones. • In 1954, the first rail bridge was built between Thane and Kalyan. • On 24th October 1984 Calcutta Metro was the country’s first rapid-transit line. • India’s first metro train ran from Esplanade to Bhowanipur (presently known as Netaji bhawan station) in Calcutta. • In 1986, computerized ticketing and reservations were introduced in New Delhi. • In 1990, the first self-printing ticket machine (SPTM) was introduced in New Delhi. • On 3rd August 2002 Indian railway started online ticketing and reservation.

Silent features of Indian railway • Indian Railways is the fourth largest Railway network in the world after US, Russia and China. • It runs about 20,000 trains everyday. • It carrying more than 2.5 crores passengers and 2.8 million tonnes of freight every day. • More than 12000 passenger trains which run across the country every day, cover a distance which is more than 4 times the distance between earth and moon. • It is largest railway system in World under one management system.
  • 15. • Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai has been given status of world heritage site by UNESCO in 2004. • Three of the lines, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and the Kalka–Shimla Railway, are collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1999 under the name “Mountain Railways of India”.
