DC diagnostic insulation resistance testing
Regular insulation resistance testing is one of the most cost effective, non-destructive
methods of identifying aging in electrical equipment. Over 60% of equipment failures are
attributed to insulation breakdown. Diagnostic DC testing is probably the easiest and most
convenient method of achieving this due to the small size and weight of the equipment.
High Performance
With its 8 mA noise immunity and 4 user-selectable filters, the
S1 series is able to provide stable measurements even in noisy
765 kV substations. The high 6 mA output current enables
quick charging of high capacitance apparatus and ensures that
the test voltage can be maintained even with high surface
leakage.
By extending the maximum test voltage to 15 kV, the S1-1568
allows compliance with NETA MTS-1997 and NETA ATS
2007 for medium-voltage motors, and IEC 60229 2007 for
electric cables with a special protective function. These are
the only instruments on the market capable of providing a
5% measurement accuracy up to 100 GΩ as specified by the
standards.
Always Safe
The S1-Series can be remotely operated via the isolated USB
interface to provide additional operator safety in high energy
locations where induced potential hazards might be present.
All test terminals on the 5 and 10 kV units have a CATIV 600 V
safety rating up to 3000 m in altitude while the 15 kV units are
CATIV 1000 V safety rated up to 4000 m.
Easy Testing
All units are preconfigured with diagnostic tests including
Polarization Index (PI), Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR),
Dielectric Discharge (DD), Stepped Voltage (SV) and Ramp test.
This allows even first time users to quickly become productive
with the instrument. Both digital and analog readings are
displayed on a large, backlit LCD display and the user can
easily toggle between different tests with the intuitive rotary
switch.
Fast Charging
The fast charge Li-ion battery can be fully charged in 2 hours
and the units can be powered through an AC source even
when the battery is flat. The battery is also designed to be
user-replaceable without voiding calibration.
Ultra Tough
The ultra-tough S1 series is built to work wherever you work.
All S1’s feature a dual case design – a flame retardant inner
case is protected by a tough outer shell that can withstand
rough knocks and drops, and keeps out moisture and dust
during storage and transport. It has been designed to provide
accurate insulation resistance measurements even in the most
extreme environments.
Smart Results
Test results, temperature and humidity measurements can
all be stored in memory, time/date stamped, and recalled to
the large LCD screen. Users can also use Bluetooth®
or USB
interface to transfer data to PowerDB, Megger’s advanced
data management software. PowerDB provides additional
functionality to S1 series users such as graphing measurements
in real-time and generating test reports.

Test leads
Megger provides a range of lead
sets and clips of different sizes and
electrical characteristics for use
with Megger 5 kV, 10 kV and 15 kV
insulation resistance testers, enabling
the user to choose the most applicable
lead set for the work in hand.
The design of the lead sets is intended
to facilitate connection to a variety of
de-energized systems for the purpose
of making insulation resistance
measurements. Electrically isolated systems may exhibit
significant capacitance which will become highly charged
during the application of the insulation test. This charge
can be lethal and connections, including the leads and clips,
should never be touched during the test. The system must be
safely discharged before touching connections.

VLF CR series
VLF & tan delta insulation testing
VLF or Very Low Frequency (VLF) 0.1 Hz testing is used on cables as an alternative to DC
testing. It is designed to test the cable for weak spots due to electrical trees in the insulation.
Cosine rectangular 0.1 Hz systems have been developed to meet international standards such
as IEC HD 620/621 and IEEE 400. The benefit of the cosine rectangular waveform is that you
can test longer cables to the standards of 0.1 Hz.
Many of our VLF test systems also feature DC and pulsed DC outputs to enable sheath
testing and sheath fault pinpointing using the ESG NT. See page 17.
20 kV rectangular test set
Easytest 20 kV
The Easytest is a
simplified version
of the standard
rectangular VLF test.
Typically, a test
is performed in
accordance with
company specifications
after repairs or after
a new cable has been
installed.
28/40/60 kV VLF cosine rectangular test systems
This range of insulation testers combine VLF, DC and sheath
fault testing into one unit. The cosine rectangular waveform
at 0.1 Hz is ideal for longer cable runs where true sine wave
VLF sets may have to reduce the test frequency to levels not
compliant with the standards (<0.1 Hz). With a range of up
to 13.6 miles depending on model, these testers have a high
test capacitance capability, an integrated discharge system
and benefit from two module design. Cosine rectangular
waveform also allows leakage current measurement. Winkis
VLF software allows all test results to be logged. There is an
optional tough transit case for off-shore use.
60/80 kV cosine rectangular test set
Powerful cosine rectangular wave form 0.1 Hz testers, testing
to 60 kV and 80 kV. With built–in breakdown detection and
leakage current measurement, these systems are ideal for use
in off-shore situations or for long underground cables.

VLF Sine Wave 34
For those who want to test
with 0.1 Hz sine wave, the
tough and portable VLF Sinus
34 kV is an ideal test system
for medium voltage cables.
It is air cooled so it can be
used continuously. The system
is easy to use, thanks to its
single-button operation and

and color display. In addition
to sine wave AC, its output
voltage shapes also include
positive and negative DC,
square wave and pulsed DC
for sheath-fault pinpointing.
There is a tan delta accessory available.
Tan delta attachment
This accessory allows the
precise determination of
the condition of a cable,
identifying aging effects
such as the degree of
humidity and water treeing.
It is used in combination
with the VLF sine wave
systems.

Pinpointing system
PD LOC
The PD LOC system solves the problem of pinpointing for
mixed cables (XLPE/PILC) and for PD in joints of single
core cables. In the field the exact location of the joints is
not generally known, and these joints cannot be localized
using audio frequency methods. This system has an impulse
transmitter that uses an inductive coupler to inject a signal
into the cable. The receiver and evaluating unit consists of an
input amplifier for processing the signal and a control unit
in a single case. The visualization of the distance system’s
transmitter location is performed by using a TDR in a separate
menu, by means of an additional PD software function.
Partial discharge detection and mapping
Partial discharge detection and mapping are powerful techniques to diagnose the condition
of a cable network and to predict where faults are likely to occur. By allowing the
replacement of damaged cable in advance of failure, it prevents power users losing supply
unexpectedly. These compact systems measure partial discharge at points along a cable using
the damped AC method (DAC).
Partial discharge detector
TE PDS
This provides an inductive and capacitive sensor for quality
assessment by detecting partial discharge in joints and
terminations of HV insulated cables.
TDS NT series
The TDS NT consists of a multifunctional, compact voltage
source and a PD detector. The TDS NT can be used to test
cables with a powerful VLF-CR voltage as per international
standards (IEC, IEEE). In addition, using the PDS 60 PD
detector a PD diagnosis can be performed. Alternatively,
the TDS NT can be used for a PD diagnosis with the proven
damped AC test voltage (DAC).
The innovative evaluation algorithm enables reliable
detection and precise location of partial discharges (PD
mapping) while the actual measurement is taking place. The
time consuming, post processing of data is not needed and
direct measures can be planned based on the outcome of the
data. The TDS NT is available in four different models, two
40 kV and two 60 kV versions. The set consists of a power
source, pd detector, pd calibrator, laptop, SW license and all
cables.

Teleflex VX is specially designed
to measure the fast processes
during fault location in power
cables. The new hardware
with significantly improved
specification such as sampling
frequency, pulse width and pulse
amplitude, offers longer range,
higher resolution and above all,
improved measurement.
When used with a surge
generator the ΔU trigger
technology always provides the
perfect trigger timing. The ARMslide records 15 traces in one
shot and allows the selection of the best trace, especially for
wet and long cables. The ProRange function allows range-
based gain adjustment, displaying distant reflections with
the same amplitude as those from short distances. With its
large bright color display, the Teleflex VX is operated using
a standard jog dial rotary controller, common to the Teleflex
range.
The USB interface enables a very easy data transfer either
as PDF files, as data set to the Winkis database software or
directly to a printer.
Time domain reflectometery
A well-established technique for fault location in both high and low voltage cables, time
domain reflectometery has been explained as radar for cable. The reflected wave will show
you the distance to the fault. These TDRs can be used with surge generators to form a
complete cable fault location system.

Arc reflection adapter
M219
The Arc Reflection Adapter M219 is used for fault location on
low-, medium- and high-voltage cables. The M219 causes a
low resistive arc at the fault spot. At the same time the M219
also protects the reflectometer from the high voltage in
the cable.
Cable fault burner
BT500-IS-1
For converting high resistance
faults in signal, control and
telecommunication cables into
low resistance faults.
DC earth fault locator
Geolux GL660-1
This unit is designed for
fault location in isolated,
earth free IT and similar
systems up to 660 V DC/
AC. The GL660 directly
connects to the faulty
line with live voltages up
to 660 V, and generates
a low frequency pulsed
signal which allows the
tracing by a specific
receiver along the faulty
line to the fault position.
A single earth fault will cause no service interruption.
However, with the occurrence of a second earth fault there
is a high risk of partial or complete breakdown of the
installation. Consequently any earth fault must be located
and repaired as fast as possible. The GL660-1 can locate faults
up to 150 kΩ even in noisy environments and without the
need to switch off the system.
Impedance meter
NIM1000
With a test current of up to 1 kA, the NIM1000 measures the
network impedance of the phase and neutral conductors to
the 10th
harmonic. It highlights load-sensitive and neutral
faults, detects poor contacts and unseen problems. It is also
useful for measuring the earth loop impedance close to the
source of supply.

Electromagnetic impulse detector
651113
The electromagnetic
detector system
is used primarily
to localize faults
on cable buried in
conduit. It may also
be used to localize
faults on non-buried
and direct-buried
cable.
When used with the optional surface coil, it is also possible
to trace cable. When used with the optional earth frame, it is
possible to pinpoint faults on direct-buried cables.
Sheath fault pinpointer
ESG NT
Used with any DC or pulsed DC sheath test output such as
from the MFM10 or MMG10 as a transmitter, the ESG NT
pinpoints a sheath fault using the step voltage or pool of
potential technique. The easy-to-use instrument utilizes a TFT
color display which is very readable in bright sunlight and has
auto or manual sensitivity adjustment. The display can show
a simple digital bar graph, or show the deflections of the last
7 pulses. A fully automatic calibration keeps the error always
at zero and the integrated noise suppression eliminates all
influences by DC, railway currents, industrial plants and high
resistive soil environments. The step voltage is measured
using two earth rods.
Dual polarity 10 kV system
MFM10
This is a highly portable system enclosed in an IP53 wheeled
case. Automatic measurement enables the testing of cable
sheaths as well as the pre-location
and pin-pointing of cable sheath
faults. A single test lead makes
connection easy and the unit
will test its own connections for
pre-location. The sheath fault
pre-location method is automatic,
the operator only has to enter
the overall cable length. The
±10 kV DC output permits the
testing of HV cables. The bipolar
function eliminates the external
thermoelectric and galvanic effects
on pre-location considerably
enhancing the accuracy.
10 kV system
MMG10
Designed for the voltage
testing of PE and PVC cables
and the location of sheath
faults in shielded plastic
cables in conjunction with a
pin-pointer.
Cable sheath fault locating
Dual polarity 10 kV system high voltage
bridge for fault location in long cables
HVB10
HVB10 is a highly accurate
high voltage bridge designed
to locate cable and sheath
faults, perform sheath testing,
and pinpoint sheath faults. It
is especially suited to long HV
cables. With its high resolution,
intermittent fault detection
function, and load adaptation
for faster cable charging, it is
an indispensable tool.
It accurately pre-locates cable
interruptions and short-circuit
faults, and detects high-resistance conductor faults that
cannot be pre-located with impulse reflection based methods.
The HV bridge is equipped with a powerful discharge unit
which allows the safe discharge of cables with a capacity
of up to 25 µF. Prior to each test, a capacity measurement
ensures that the expected discharge energy does not exceed
these parameters and damage the instrument, making it very
suitable for very long cables.

Easyloc
A fast and easy-to-use system for the detection and tracing
of underground cable runs and pipe networks. The receiver
unit displays the signal level and has automatic sensitivity
control to help with location. The operator is given both
audio and visual confirmation of location. Easyloc also gives
an approximate depth measurement.
Cable identifier
CI
The CI identifies a particular cable by means of a current
impulse generator and receiver. The receiver is connected to a
flexible CT or a pad style detector to receive the identification
signal. The pulse
generator transmits a
single sawtooth pulse
with a peak current up
to 100 A into the cable
being identified. Special
software controls and
verifies all parameters
of the received pulse.
Medium voltage cable phase identifier
PIL 8
The PIL8 uses three pairs of transceiver clamps connected
without any leads, one to each of the short circuited phases.
The transceiver clamps do not require a power supply. At the
other end of the cable an audio frequency current is injected
into the cable by means of a battery operated generator/
receiver. This induces a voltage in the transceiver clamps
which is rectified and stored in a capacitor. When sufficiently
charged the clamp transmits a coded signal to the receiver
indicating the designated phase to which the pairs of clamps
has been connected.
Acoustic and electromagnetic
surge wave receiver
digiPHONE+
This instrument sets the standard by integrating audio and
electro-magnetic functionality into one simple to understand
unit. Combining two new technologies for efficient noise
suppression, it offers exceptional acoustic performance which
filters the fault noise. This means it is possible to lower the
surge energy and find faults in noisy environments. The
operator’s hearing is protected by auto proximity mute,
turning off the head set as a hand approaches the sensor
handle and turning it on again once mechanical oscillations
have ceased, and limiting the earphone output to 84 db(A).
Cable tracing is simplified using the left right indicator
keeping the sensor over the cable while the compass
indicates the direction to the fault and the color display
shows the distance to the fault.
Cable locating and fault pinpointing
These are used in conjunction with a surge generator or sheath fault locator pulsed energy
source to find the exact location of a fault.
The PIL 8 meets the requirement of EN50110-1 (VDE0105part1),
because its application eliminates the need to disconnect the
short circuiting and earthing circuit. After installation of the
three pairs of clamps, the switchgear chamber can be closed,
greatly enhancing safety.

High current, low resistance testing
For testing circuit breaker contact resistance, low resistance testers are used for testing circuit
breaker contact resistance with a high output current. For this and other applications that
require a higher test current, Megger offers an extensive range of testers that will fit your
testing needs.
Hand-held 200 A micro-ohmmeter
DLRO-H200
The DLRO-H200 high-current micro-ohmmeter uses ultra-
capacitor technology to achieve its size. A key benefit is that
this instrument operates from rechargeable batteries giving
over 2,000 measurements per charge, allowing a full day’s
testing to be done where there is no mains supply.
The DLRO-H200 is suitable for a range of applications,
including testing busbar and cable joints, and carrying out
contact resistance measurements on low-, medium- and high
voltage circuit breakers. Circuit breaker tests performed with
the instrument conform fully to IEC and IEEE standards. The
DLRO-H200 supports DualGround testing for circuit breakers.
The DLRO-H200 is auto-ranging and measures resistance
from 1 µΩ to 1 Ω. Results are shown on an LCD display that
includes an analog arc to show the start of charge of the
ultra-capacitor. 190 tests results can be stored on-board and
be downloaded via a wireless Bluetooth connection. The
Bluetooth facility can also be used with a headset to provide
an audible pass/fail signal against user adjustable limits as
tests are performed.

high resolution, 0.1 µΩ,
portable method of
performing on-site low
resistance measurements.
The test current is variable
from 10 A to 600 A, in
1 A steps, enabling the
user to perform all the
required tests with a single
instrument. The unit can be
used to test small circuit breaker contact
resistance to IEC 62271-100, switch contacts,
busbars, joints, splices, fuses and rail bonds. The full keyboard
makes labeling and storing of results quick and easy.
A large liquid crystal display provides all the information
needed to perform a test and displays all test parameters and
measurement results.
The DLRO200/115 measures contact
resistance in high voltage
circuit breakers, disconnecting
switches (isolators), busbar
joints, and other low resistance
applications.
This test set accurately measures
resistances ranging from 0.1µΩ
to 1Ω, at high currents.
The DLRO200-115 can provide test currents

High current, low resistance testing
Safer and Faster Testing with DualGround™
DualGround™ is Megger’s groundbreaking technology that enables a
safer and faster workflow because both sides of the circuit breaker remain
grounded throughout the test.
Dynamic Capacitance Measurement
Megger test sets with DualGround™ technology uses dynamic capacitance
measurement (DCM) to measure contact timing on circuit breakers with both
sides grounded. The results are identical to those achieved with conventional
contact timing methods. This makes it possible to test circuit breakers without
removing jumpers and bus-bar connections, opening up a wide range of
applications in gas insulated substation, generator and transformer breaker
diagnostic testing.
Why is it safer?
Conventional timing requires at least one side of the circuit breaker to be
ungrounded to allow the instrument to sense the change in contact status.
Live high voltage conductors will induce currents in all parallel conductors
due to capacitive coupling. In a disconnected circuit breaker with one side
connected to earth and both disconnectors open, this current can reach
double digit mA values which are lethal for humans.
The DCM technique uses high frequency to achieve resonance in the test
circuit. The resonance frequency varies when the circuit breaker changes state,
and this is how a change from open to closed (and vice versa) is detected. This
also means that the technique is completely immune to the effects of 50 or 60
Hz interference.
Using DCM we can obtain reliable measurements with both sides of the circuit
breaker grounded, thus never exposing personnel to any induced currents.
Testing with DualGround™
Testing is much safer using the DCM module and DualGround.
With only one side grounded the induced current can reach values
high enough to be harmful or lethal for humans.

MS-2A
MS-2A is capable of testing
the time-delay characteristics
of overcurrent relays, motor
overload relays and moulded-
case circuit breakers, rated up
to 125 A, when following the
recommended test procedure
for testing the time delay of
these devices at three times
their rating.
Higher currents are available for the short durations required
to test an instantaneous trip element. For example, the
test set will provide a maximum short duration output of
750 amperes through a typical, 125 A, moulded-case circuit
breaker.
The DDA-3000 and
DDA-6000 series are
designed specifically to
test low-voltage power
and molded-case circuit
breakers equipped with
thermal, magnetic or
solid-state trip devices.
The units are fully
compliant with NEMA
AB-4 test guidelines.
Tests are performed by
simulating an overload or fault condition. Each test set is
an integrated test system that provides a variable, high-
current output. The test sets incorporate all control circuitry
and instrumentation necessary to test direct-acting circuit
breakers accurately, efficiently and safely.
The principle behind primary current injection testing is simple – a test current is injected into
the high current side of the system to determine how various system components function
at this particular level of current. The test current used has to be similar in magnitude to the
current expected during continuous or instantaneous operation of the electrical apparatus
so that operating conditions are accurately simulated. Primary current injection is a versatile
technique that can be applied to test the operation of circuit breakers, automatic reclosers
and sectionalizers, the ratio and polarity on current transformers, and the integrity of
ground grids and other safety grounding devices.

Protective relays in the electrical power system provide protection against overloads,
faults, abnormal conditions, etc. Like any complex device, relays deteriorate over time.
Electromechanical relays may malfunction due to aging of mechanical components, and
even solid state and microprocessor based relays with no moving parts may experience
electronic circuitry failure or software/firmware issues. NETA Maintenance and Testing
standards recommend routine testing of your relays to ensure they function correctly when
needed. Proper testing and maintenance of protective relays safeguards the integrity of the
protection scheme, prevents nuisance tripping and minimizes damage to equipment when
faults do occur.

instrument using a
combination of bridge
and direct (vector)
measurements and is
capable of measuring
capacitive, resistive and
inductive loads.

field testing of electrical equipment insulation and insulating
materials and calibration of capacitance coupled voltage
transformers and other ratio devices. A test set with unique
high accuracy for the most demanding applications.
Transformer testing
Transformers are one of the most critical and expensive assets in a substation. If a large
transformer fails it will be a major problem for the asset owner. It will be expensive to
repair or replace and there may not be a replacement of the required type available on short
notice. Extending transformer life and predicting failure is becoming increasingly important
to asset owners and managers.

demagnetization, ratio,
saturation, winding
resistance, polarity,
phase deviation, and
insulation tests on current
transformers. The MRCT

Insulation diagnostic analyzers
IDAX series
IDAX 300 series
uses frequency
domain
spectroscopy
techniques and
state-of-the-art
software to make
a transformer
moisture assessment in less than 18 minutes. FDS is a reliable
and accurate method for assessment of the condition of
the insulating components of transformers and bushings.
It measures capacitances and tan delta (or power factor) of
the insulation between the transformer windings at multiple
frequencies and plots the resultant curve. Comparing this
measured curve with a modelled curve allows estimation of
the moisture content. The IDAX 350 incorporates an on-board
PC for results analysis and reporting within the enclosure.
Adding the VAX020 to the IDAX300 expands the test
voltage range from 200 V to 2 kV. This improves IDAX’s
test performance in terms of accuracy in environments with
extremely high interference such as HVDC substations.

12 kV tan delta power factor test set
DELTA4000 series
Tough yet light, and designed to work reliably in high-interference
areas like substation switchyards, Megger’s DELTA4000 series
diagnostic insulation systems offer time saving, fully automatic power
factor/tan delta measurement and tip-up testing. Also provided are
facilities for full manual control –including the ability to vary the
applied voltage up to 12 kV during testing – to cater for special
testing requirements.
Accurate and dependable temperature correction based on the actual
condition of the test object, can be applied to results using a novel
technique, which works with data acquired from a separate dynamic
frequency response (DFR) test. Automatic detection of non-linear
response, which suggests the need for further tip-up testing and
which is often a useful indicator of incipient insulation problems,
is also provided. Despite their small size and low weight, Megger’s
DELTA4000 series test sets offer comprehensive facilities for assessing
the condition of electrical insulation in all types of high voltage
equipment including transformers, bushings, circuit breakers, cables,
lightning arrestors and
rotating machinery. They
also measure the excitation
current of transformer
windings.
The test sets generate their
own test voltage, which
is independent of supply
quality. A further benefit
of this approach is that it
allows the test voltage to
be varied in frequency from
1 Hz to 500 Hz, making
the instruments even more
versatile. There is the
option of using an on-board
computer or an external
computer to control the
Delta4000.
For multiple frequency tan delta measurement as used on generators
and transformers, see the IDAX on page 35.

Sweep frequency response analyzers
FRAX series
SFRA is a method for
assessing whether or not a
transformer has been subject
to mechanical damage, for
example when moved
or from a lightning
strike. FRAX and its
software allows repeatable
fingerprinting of transformers so
that a scan can be run whenever it experiences
a traumatic event such as transportation, severe fault or
overhaul, allowing it to go back on line faster. Ideally
a transformer is fingerprinted at birth, but performing
SFRA on older transformers is also advisable so any future
problems can be diagnosed. Compatible with all international
standards for SFRA, the FRAX101 can be battery powered and
has wireless communication with a computer.
The FRAX150 offers all
the benefits of SFRA for
diagnosis of damage
to transformers,
but it is built into
a tough carry case
and includes
an on-board
computer, making
it a self contained
unit. There is a
large bright screen to
make it comfortable to
use even in direct sun light.
Data can be stored on the
hard-drive and can be downloaded
using the galvanically isolated USB port.
The FRAX 150 utilizes PowerDB software.
The Megger Leakage
Reactance Tester MLR10 is
used to measure leakage
reactance and other
associated parameters
in high voltage power
transformers. Leakage
reactance, or more
generally leakage
impedance, is measured
at the transformer primary winding while the secondary
winding is shorted. Ideally, a transformer’s primary and
secondary windings should be 100% coupled by magnetic
flux, but in real transformers there is always a small amount
of leakage flux. Leakage inductance is a result of this
leakage flux.

Within the accuracy limits of the CT,
a good current transformer should
not have a noticeable change in ratio
when a secondary burden is added.
This is because the primary effect of
additional burden on a good CT is a
rise in the secondary voltage.

With a turn ratio of 20,000:1, the TTR100 offers the highest
turns ratio accuracy in the industry of 0.1%.
TTR25 TTR100
Transformer testing
Megger three-phase turns ratio and winding resistance testers share common test leads
so all tests can be carried out without having to swap and re-connect leads. This speeds
up testing substantially, especially on large power transformers with multiple taps. For
transformer power factor testing, see DELTA4000 on page 36.
80 V transformer turns ratio testers
TTR300 series
The TTR300 series of three-phase transformer turns ratio
test sets are designed to measure the turns ratio of power,
instrument and distribution transformers in a substation
or manufacturing environment. The instruments are ideal
for power transformer manufacturers. Their unique testing
procedures and storage capability allows an operator to
set up and test difficult three-phase transformers in a
fraction of the time compared to other TTRs.
The TTR300 series also measure the phase deviation of the
transformer primary and secondary. This quickly indicates
problems such as partial shorted turns and core faults.
This is also useful in verifying phase errors in all types of
potential transformers and current transformers.
Each unit comes equipped with a remote-control switch
for single person testing. This allows the operator to test
transformers with LTCs very quickly.
The series consists of three instruments:
The TTR330 offers a
new user interface
which allows the
operator to interact
with the PowerDB
ONBOARD
software
system via a full
QWERTY keyboard
and navigation keypads on
a bright 8.4” VGA full color
screen. An advanced feature of the TTR330 allows the user to
customize test forms via the full-version PowerDB software.
The TTR310 has the
ability to store test
results, upload results
to a PC (via a RS232
serial port), and
print them in
the field via an
optional thermal
paper printer,
without the use of an external
computer.
The TTR300 is designed
to be remotely
controlled via a PC
running PowerDB

PowerDB Advanced
or Pro. The TTR300 is
field upgradeable to
the TTR310 or TTR330.

The MTO series delivers full eight-terminal/six-winding
resistance measurement capability. It is designed to save
time by testing all six windings without having to disconnect
and reconnect leads. Also, the simultaneous winding
magnetization (SWM) method gives fast and reliable
measurements even on large transformers with delta
configuration on the low voltage side. Additionally, the MTO
series leads are interchangeable with the Megger TTR300
series of three-phase turns ratio instruments which eliminates
additional connecting time if performing the two tests
together.
The MTO series consists of two models:
The base model, the
MTO300, is designed to
be remote controlled via
PowerDB software on an
external PC or a Megger
transformer test product
with on-board computer.
The MTO330 offers the same functionality as the MTO300.
However, it is equipped with an onboard computer featuring
a full QWERTY keyboard and navigational pushbuttons. It has
an 8.4 inch full-color
VGA transflective
screen viewable in
bright sunlight.
Single-phase transformer ohmmeter
MTO210
MTO210 is a mains
powered, field-
portable instrument
designed specifically
to measure the DC
resistance of all
types of magnetic
windings safely
and accurately. Its
main use is for all
types of transformer
windings but it can also test rotating machine windings and
perform low-current resistance measurements on connections,
contacts and control circuits.
Three features combine to make this instrument unique:
n dual winding measurement
n load tap-changer testing
n auto safety discharge circuit
The dual set of potential inputs measure the resistance of the
primary and secondary windings of a single- or three-phase
transformer simultaneously speeding up the measurement.
To achieve a tenfold improvement in reading time, a
balancing current is applied to the secondary to attenuate the
circulating current induced when the test current is applied
to the primary winding. When testing the windings and
contact resistance on tap-changers with make-before-break
contacts and voltage regulators, the internal shutdown circuit
of MTO210, which will be triggered by a voltage kickback of
a few microseconds if the tap-changer contacts are opened,
can be used to check for pitted or misaligned contacts as the
instrument will shut down if either condition occurs. Users
are protected by the shutdown circuit safety feature: any
inadvertent disconnection of a test lead or loss of power to
the instrument will safely discharge the energy stored in the
test sample.

MTO300 series
PowerDB OnBoard – consistent and repeatable
PowerDB OnBoard embeds the powerful PowerDB asset management software within instruments running the WindowsTM
operating system, eliminating the need for an external computer. PowerDB OnBoard brings field based users consistent,
repeatable tests across instruments, unprecedented data analysis (including historical trend charting) and asset management
tools, all from on-screen ‘forms based’ views.
Also included are a number of new communication technologies, providing a near seamless interface between the
instrument and optional peripheral equipment, such as an “in-lid” USB full-sheet thermal-paper printer, USB flash drive, and
external PC (via Ethernet port). For advanced users, a USB router can be connected to the instrument to provide simultaneous
access to other equipment, such as a mouse or a keyboard. Storage space is provided by either the internal flash memory or
external USB flash drive – sufficient to save literally tens of thousands of test data sets.
Reduced training time
A common user interface reduces the training time needed to understand the different instruments that a busy test engineer
has to use. New instruments with PowerDB OnBoard such as TTR330 and MTO330 are truly forms-based, have a large 8.4”
full-VGA bright color display, and let you set up and control the instruments through on-screen test form views. On-screen
test forms are exact replicas of the test forms which are printed as a permanent test form record once testing is complete.
They are secure reports generated directly from instrument so no human interface is needed.
For more information about PowerDB software, see page 45.

  • 4. 4 Power Catalog www.megger.com/us 1-800-723-2861 DC diagnostic insulation resistance testing Regular insulation resistance testing is one of the most cost effective, non-destructive methods of identifying aging in electrical equipment. Over 60% of equipment failures are attributed to insulation breakdown. Diagnostic DC testing is probably the easiest and most convenient method of achieving this due to the small size and weight of the equipment. High Performance With its 8 mA noise immunity and 4 user-selectable filters, the S1 series is able to provide stable measurements even in noisy 765 kV substations. The high 6 mA output current enables quick charging of high capacitance apparatus and ensures that the test voltage can be maintained even with high surface leakage. By extending the maximum test voltage to 15 kV, the S1-1568 allows compliance with NETA MTS-1997 and NETA ATS 2007 for medium-voltage motors, and IEC 60229 2007 for electric cables with a special protective function. These are the only instruments on the market capable of providing a 5% measurement accuracy up to 100 GΩ as specified by the standards. Always Safe The S1-Series can be remotely operated via the isolated USB interface to provide additional operator safety in high energy locations where induced potential hazards might be present. All test terminals on the 5 and 10 kV units have a CATIV 600 V safety rating up to 3000 m in altitude while the 15 kV units are CATIV 1000 V safety rated up to 4000 m. Easy Testing All units are preconfigured with diagnostic tests including Polarization Index (PI), Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR), Dielectric Discharge (DD), Stepped Voltage (SV) and Ramp test. This allows even first time users to quickly become productive with the instrument. Both digital and analog readings are displayed on a large, backlit LCD display and the user can easily toggle between different tests with the intuitive rotary switch. Fast Charging The fast charge Li-ion battery can be fully charged in 2 hours and the units can be powered through an AC source even when the battery is flat. The battery is also designed to be user-replaceable without voiding calibration. Ultra Tough The ultra-tough S1 series is built to work wherever you work. All S1’s feature a dual case design – a flame retardant inner case is protected by a tough outer shell that can withstand rough knocks and drops, and keeps out moisture and dust during storage and transport. It has been designed to provide accurate insulation resistance measurements even in the most extreme environments. Smart Results Test results, temperature and humidity measurements can all be stored in memory, time/date stamped, and recalled to the large LCD screen. Users can also use Bluetooth® or USB interface to transfer data to PowerDB, Megger’s advanced data management software. PowerDB provides additional functionality to S1 series users such as graphing measurements in real-time and generating test reports. Insulation resistance testers S1 series Megger S1 Series For the past 80 years, Megger’s premium S1 series of insulation resistance testers have offered the full range of features that you have come to expect from high quality, utility grade insulation testing equipment. • 5. 1-800-723-2861 www.megger.com/us Power Catalog 5 Test leads Megger provides a range of lead sets and clips of different sizes and electrical characteristics for use with Megger 5 kV, 10 kV and 15 kV insulation resistance testers, enabling the user to choose the most applicable lead set for the work in hand. The design of the lead sets is intended to facilitate connection to a variety of de-energized systems for the purpose of making insulation resistance measurements. Electrically isolated systems may exhibit significant capacitance which will become highly charged during the application of the insulation test. This charge can be lethal and connections, including the leads and clips, should never be touched during the test. The system must be safely discharged before touching connections.
  • 6. 6 Power Catalog www.megger.com/us 1-800-723-2861 DC hipot testing High voltage DC, or hipot testers, are sometimes known as overvoltage or withstand testers. It is designed to test the cable for weak spots due to electrical trees in the insulation. Cosine rectangular 0.1 Hz systems have been developed to meet international standards such as IEC HD 620/621 and IEEE 400. The benefit of the cosine rectangular waveform is that you can test longer cables to the standards of 0.1 Hz. Many of our VLF test systems also feature DC and pulsed DC outputs to enable sheath testing and sheath fault pinpointing using the ESG NT. See page 17. 20 kV rectangular test set Easytest 20 kV The Easytest is a simplified version of the standard rectangular VLF test. Typically, a test is performed in accordance with company specifications after repairs or after a new cable has been installed. 28/40/60 kV VLF cosine rectangular test systems This range of insulation testers combine VLF, DC and sheath fault testing into one unit. The cosine rectangular waveform at 0.1 Hz is ideal for longer cable runs where true sine wave VLF sets may have to reduce the test frequency to levels not compliant with the standards (<0.1 Hz). With a range of up to 13.6 miles depending on model, these testers have a high test capacitance capability, an integrated discharge system and benefit from two module design. Cosine rectangular waveform also allows leakage current measurement. Winkis VLF software allows all test results to be logged. There is an optional tough transit case for off-shore use. 60/80 kV cosine rectangular test set Powerful cosine rectangular wave form 0.1 Hz testers, testing to 60 kV and 80 kV. With built–in breakdown detection and leakage current measurement, these systems are ideal for use in off-shore situations or for long underground cables. VLF CR HP series

  • 11. 1-800-723-2861 www.megger.com/us Power Catalog 11 Pinpointing system PD LOC The PD LOC system solves the problem of pinpointing for mixed cables (XLPE/PILC) and for PD in joints of single core cables. In the field the exact location of the joints is not generally known, and these joints cannot be localized using audio frequency methods. This system has an impulse transmitter that uses an inductive coupler to inject a signal into the cable. The receiver and evaluating unit consists of an input amplifier for processing the signal and a control unit in a single case. The visualization of the distance system’s transmitter location is performed by using a TDR in a separate menu, by means of an additional PD software function. Partial discharge detection and mapping Partial discharge detection and mapping are powerful techniques to diagnose the condition of a cable network and to predict where faults are likely to occur. By allowing the replacement of damaged cable in advance of failure, it prevents power users losing supply unexpectedly. These compact systems measure partial discharge at points along a cable using the damped AC method (DAC). Partial discharge detector TE PDS This provides an inductive and capacitive sensor for quality assessment by detecting partial discharge in joints and terminations of HV insulated cables. TDS NT series The TDS NT consists of a multifunctional, compact voltage source and a PD detector. The TDS NT can be used to test cables with a powerful VLF-CR voltage as per international standards (IEC, IEEE). In addition, using the PDS 60 PD detector a PD diagnosis can be performed. Alternatively, the TDS NT can be used for a PD diagnosis with the proven damped AC test voltage (DAC). The innovative evaluation algorithm enables reliable detection and precise location of partial discharges (PD mapping) while the actual measurement is taking place. The time consuming, post processing of data is not needed and direct measures can be planned based on the outcome of the data. The TDS NT is available in four different models, two 40 kV and two 60 kV versions. The set consists of a power source, pd detector, pd calibrator, laptop, SW license and all cables. The step voltage is measured using two earth rods. Dual polarity 10 kV system MFM10 This is a highly portable system enclosed in an IP53 wheeled case. Automatic measurement enables the testing of cable sheaths as well as the pre-location and pin-pointing of cable sheath faults. A single test lead makes connection easy and the unit will test its own connections for pre-location. The sheath fault pre-location method is automatic, the operator only has to enter the overall cable length. The ±10 kV DC output permits the testing of HV cables. The bipolar function eliminates the external thermoelectric and galvanic effects on pre-location considerably enhancing the accuracy. 10 kV system MMG10 Designed for the voltage testing of PE and PVC cables and the location of sheath faults in shielded plastic cables in conjunction with a pin-pointer. Cable sheath fault locating Dual polarity 10 kV system high voltage bridge for fault location in long cables HVB10 HVB10 is a highly accurate high voltage bridge designed to locate cable and sheath faults, perform sheath testing, and pinpoint sheath faults. It is especially suited to long HV cables. With its high resolution, intermittent fault detection function, and load adaptation for faster cable charging, it is an indispensable tool. It accurately pre-locates cable interruptions and short-circuit faults, and detects high-resistance conductor faults that cannot be pre-located with impulse reflection based methods. The HV bridge is equipped with a powerful discharge unit which allows the safe discharge of cables with a capacity of up to 25 µF. The receiver unit displays the signal level and has automatic sensitivity control to help with location. The operator is given both audio and visual confirmation of location. Easyloc also gives an approximate depth measurement. Cable identifier CI The CI identifies a particular cable by means of a current impulse generator and receiver. The receiver is connected to a flexible CT or a pad style detector to receive the identification signal. The pulse generator transmits a single sawtooth pulse with a peak current up to 100 A into the cable being identified. Special software controls and verifies all parameters of the received pulse. Medium voltage cable phase identifier PIL 8 The PIL8 uses three pairs of transceiver clamps connected without any leads, one to each of the short circuited phases. The transceiver clamps do not require a power supply. At the other end of the cable an audio frequency current is injected into the cable by means of a battery operated generator/ receiver. This induces a voltage in the transceiver clamps which is rectified and stored in a capacitor. When sufficiently charged the clamp transmits a coded signal to the receiver indicating the designated phase to which the pairs of clamps has been connected. Acoustic and electromagnetic surge wave receiver digiPHONE+ This instrument sets the standard by integrating audio and electro-magnetic functionality into one simple to understand unit. Combining two new technologies for efficient noise suppression, it offers exceptional acoustic performance which filters the fault noise. This means it is possible to lower the surge energy and find faults in noisy environments. The operator’s hearing is protected by auto proximity mute, turning off the head set as a hand approaches the sensor handle and turning it on again once mechanical oscillations have ceased, and limiting the earphone output to 84 db(A). Cable tracing is simplified using the left right indicator keeping the sensor over the cable while the compass indicates the direction to the fault and the color display shows the distance to the fault. Cable locating and fault pinpointing These are used in conjunction with a surge generator or sheath fault locator pulsed energy source to find the exact location of a fault. The PIL 8 meets the requirement of EN50110-1 (VDE0105part1), because its application eliminates the need to disconnect the short circuiting and earthing circuit. After installation of the three pairs of clamps, the switchgear chamber can be closed, greatly enhancing safety.

High current, low resistance testing Safer and Faster Testing with DualGround™ DualGround™ is Megger’s groundbreaking technology that enables a safer and faster workflow because both sides of the circuit breaker remain grounded throughout the test. Dynamic Capacitance Measurement Megger test sets with DualGround™ technology uses dynamic capacitance measurement (DCM) to measure contact timing on circuit breakers with both sides grounded. The results are identical to those achieved with conventional contact timing methods. This makes it possible to test circuit breakers without removing jumpers and bus-bar connections, opening up a wide range of applications in gas insulated substation, generator and transformer breaker diagnostic testing. Why is it safer? Conventional timing requires at least one side of the circuit breaker to be ungrounded to allow the instrument to sense the change in contact status. Live high voltage conductors will induce currents in all parallel conductors due to capacitive coupling. In a disconnected circuit breaker with one side connected to earth and both disconnectors open, this current can reach double digit mA values which are lethal for humans. The DCM technique uses high frequency to achieve resonance in the test circuit. The resonance frequency varies when the circuit breaker changes state, and this is how a change from open to closed (and vice versa) is detected. This also means that the technique is completely immune to the effects of 50 or 60 Hz interference. Using DCM we can obtain reliable measurements with both sides of the circuit breaker grounded, thus never exposing personnel to any induced currents. Testing with DualGround™ Testing is much safer using the DCM module and DualGround. With only one side grounded the induced current can reach values high enough to be harmful or lethal for humans.

Higher currents are available for the short durations required to test an instantaneous trip element. For example, the test set will provide a maximum short duration output of 750 amperes through a typical, 125 A, moulded-case circuit breaker. The DDA-3000 and DDA-6000 series are designed specifically to test low-voltage power and molded-case circuit breakers equipped with thermal, magnetic or solid-state trip devices. The units are fully compliant with NEMA AB-4 test guidelines. Tests are performed by simulating an overload or fault condition. Each test set is an integrated test system that provides a variable, high- current output. The test sets incorporate all control circuitry and instrumentation necessary to test direct-acting circuit breakers accurately, efficiently and safely. The principle behind primary current injection testing is simple – a test current is injected into the high current side of the system to determine how various system components function at this particular level of current. The test current used has to be similar in magnitude to the current expected during continuous or instantaneous operation of the electrical apparatus so that operating conditions are accurately simulated. Primary current injection is a versatile technique that can be applied to test the operation of circuit breakers, automatic reclosers and sectionalizers, the ratio and polarity on current transformers, and the integrity of ground grids and other safety grounding devices. CDAX 605 is designed for the laboratory, production line, field testing of electrical equipment insulation and insulating materials and calibration of capacitance coupled voltage transformers and other ratio devices. A test set with unique high accuracy for the most demanding applications. Transformer testing Transformers are one of the most critical and expensive assets in a substation. If a large transformer fails it will be a major problem for the asset owner. It will be expensive to repair or replace and there may not be a replacement of the required type available on short notice. Extending transformer life and predicting failure is becoming increasingly important to asset owners and managers. Relay and current transformer tester MRCT This light, tough, portable unit is used to perform demagnetization, ratio, saturation, winding resistance, polarity, phase deviation, and insulation tests on current transformers. The MRCT provides automatic testing of single and multi-ratio CTs, reducing testing time and increasing productivity. The MRCT is available with or without a built-in touchscreen display, with identical features and capabilities. Units without the built-in display can be controlled using Megger’s Smart Touch View Interface (STVI) controller or a PC. Insulation diagnostic analyzers IDAX series IDAX 300 series uses frequency domain spectroscopy techniques and state-of-the-art software to make a transformer moisture assessment in less than 18 minutes. FDS is a reliable and accurate method for assessment of the condition of the insulating components of transformers and bushings. It measures capacitances and tan delta (or power factor) of the insulation between the transformer windings at multiple frequencies and plots the resultant curve. Comparing this measured curve with a modelled curve allows estimation of the moisture content. The IDAX 350 incorporates an on-board PC for results analysis and reporting within the enclosure. Adding the VAX020 to the IDAX300 expands the test voltage range from 200 V to 2 kV. This improves IDAX’s test performance in terms of accuracy in environments with extremely high interference such as HVDC substations. Capacitance and dissipation factor test set CDAX605 STVI

Capacitance range expansion Resonating Inductor This unit expands the range of Power Factor (Capacitance and Dissipation Factors) test sets. 12 kV tan delta power factor test set DELTA4000 series Tough yet light, and designed to work reliably in high-interference areas like substation switchyards, Megger’s DELTA4000 series diagnostic insulation systems offer time saving, fully automatic power factor/tan delta measurement and tip-up testing. Also provided are facilities for full manual control –including the ability to vary the applied voltage up to 12 kV during testing – to cater for special testing requirements. Accurate and dependable temperature correction based on the actual condition of the test object, can be applied to results using a novel technique, which works with data acquired from a separate dynamic frequency response (DFR) test. Automatic detection of non-linear response, which suggests the need for further tip-up testing and which is often a useful indicator of incipient insulation problems, is also provided. Despite their small size and low weight, Megger’s DELTA4000 series test sets offer comprehensive facilities for assessing the condition of electrical insulation in all types of high voltage equipment including transformers, bushings, circuit breakers, cables, lightning arrestors and rotating machinery. They also measure the excitation current of transformer windings. The test sets generate their own test voltage, which is independent of supply quality. A further benefit of this approach is that it allows the test voltage to be varied in frequency from 1 Hz to 500 Hz, making the instruments even more versatile. There is the option of using an on-board computer or an external computer to control the Delta4000. For multiple frequency tan delta measurement as used on generators and transformers, see the IDAX on page 35.

FRAX and its software allows repeatable fingerprinting of transformers so that a scan can be run whenever it experiences a traumatic event such as transportation, severe fault or overhaul, allowing it to go back on line faster. Ideally a transformer is fingerprinted at birth, but performing SFRA on older transformers is also advisable so any future problems can be diagnosed. Compatible with all international standards for SFRA, the FRAX101 can be battery powered and has wireless communication with a computer. The FRAX150 offers all the benefits of SFRA for diagnosis of damage to transformers, but it is built into a tough carry case and includes an on-board computer, making it a self contained unit. There is a large bright screen to make it comfortable to use even in direct sun light. Data can be stored on the hard-drive and can be downloaded using the galvanically isolated USB port. The FRAX 150 utilizes PowerDB software. The Megger Leakage Reactance Tester MLR10 is used to measure leakage reactance and other associated parameters in high voltage power transformers. Leakage reactance, or more generally leakage impedance, is measured at the transformer primary winding while the secondary winding is shorted. Ideally, a transformer’s primary and secondary windings should be 100% coupled by magnetic flux, but in real transformers there is always a small amount of leakage flux. Leakage inductance is a result of this leakage flux. • 39. 1-800-723-2861 www.megger.com/us Power Catalog 39 The MTO series delivers full eight-terminal/six-winding resistance measurement capability. It is designed to save time by testing all six windings without having to disconnect and reconnect leads. Also, the simultaneous winding magnetization (SWM) method gives fast and reliable measurements even on large transformers with delta configuration on the low voltage side. Additionally, the MTO series leads are interchangeable with the Megger TTR300 series of three-phase turns ratio instruments which eliminates additional connecting time if performing the two tests together. The MTO series consists of two models: The base model, the MTO300, is designed to be remote controlled via PowerDB software on an external PC or a Megger transformer test product with on-board computer. The MTO330 offers the same functionality as the MTO300. However, it is equipped with an onboard computer featuring a full QWERTY keyboard and navigational pushbuttons. It has an 8.4 inch full-color VGA transflective screen viewable in bright sunlight. Single-phase transformer ohmmeter MTO210 MTO210 is a mains powered, field- portable instrument designed specifically to measure the DC resistance of all types of magnetic windings safely and accurately. Its main use is for all types of transformer windings but it can also test rotating machine windings and perform low-current resistance measurements on connections, contacts and control circuits. Three features combine to make this instrument unique: n dual winding measurement n load tap-changer testing n auto safety discharge circuit The dual set of potential inputs measure the resistance of the primary and secondary windings of a single- or three-phase transformer simultaneously speeding up the measurement. To achieve a tenfold improvement in reading time, a balancing current is applied to the secondary to attenuate the circulating current induced when the test current is applied to the primary winding. When testing the windings and contact resistance on tap-changers with make-before-break contacts and voltage regulators, the internal shutdown circuit of MTO210, which will be triggered by a voltage kickback of a few microseconds if the tap-changer contacts are opened, can be used to check for pitted or misaligned contacts as the instrument will shut down if either condition occurs. Users are protected by the shutdown circuit safety feature: any inadvertent disconnection of a test lead or loss of power to the instrument will safely discharge the energy stored in the test sample. Three-phase transformer ohmmeter MTO300 series PowerDB OnBoard – consistent and repeatable PowerDB OnBoard embeds the powerful PowerDB asset management software within instruments running the WindowsTM operating system, eliminating the need for an external computer. PowerDB OnBoard brings field based users consistent, repeatable tests across instruments, unprecedented data analysis (including historical trend charting) and asset management tools, all from on-screen ‘forms based’ views. Also included are a number of new communication technologies, providing a near seamless interface between the instrument and optional peripheral equipment, such as an “in-lid” USB full-sheet thermal-paper printer, USB flash drive, and external PC (via Ethernet port). For advanced users, a USB router can be connected to the instrument to provide simultaneous access to other equipment, such as a mouse or a keyboard. Storage space is provided by either the internal flash memory or external USB flash drive – sufficient to save literally tens of thousands of test data sets. Reduced training time A common user interface reduces the training time needed to understand the different instruments that a busy test engineer has to use. New instruments with PowerDB OnBoard such as TTR330 and MTO330 are truly forms-based, have a large 8.4” full-VGA bright color display, and let you set up and control the instruments through on-screen test form views. On-screen test forms are exact replicas of the test forms which are printed as a permanent test form record once testing is complete. They are secure reports generated directly from instrument so no human interface is needed. For more information about PowerDB software, see page 45.
