Volunteers play a key role in the ongoing restoration work at Nachusa Grasslands through activities such as removing brush, pulling weeds, collecting and processing seeds, and conducting prescribed burns under supervision.
Decorah Envirothon - Shrubs for birds and wildlifeJohn Kraus
This document discusses many different shrub species that provide benefits for birds and wildlife. It describes the appearance, flowering times, fruit production, and value as a food source or shelter for various bird and animal species of each shrub. Some of the shrubs highlighted include gooseberry, black currant, coralberry, ninebark, elderberry, dogwood species, sumac, serviceberry, crabapple, hawthorn, wild plum, American hazel, redbud, wahoo, willows, and red cedar. The document emphasizes that planting native shrubs provides critical habitat and nutrition for birds and animals throughout the seasons.
Jessica Holbrook documented her exploration of various nature locations around Ohio University for a biology class assignment. She visited several sites including the Ridges Land Lab, Ridges Cemeteries Nature Walk, and Nagy Pond. At each location, she and some friends and a photographer identified and photographed various plant and animal species. In total over 75 species of flora and fauna were documented, including trees, ferns, mosses, fungi, insects, birds, fish, and small mammals. However, she was saddened by the negative human impacts she observed, like invasive species crowding out natives and litter in even isolated areas, showing how human influence has affected wildlife near the university.

Seeing these flowers make life a little more acceptable. It reminds us how much human has changed the world by introducing new species to new places. It is also a story how of human has changed evolution, introducing new varieties and species of plants. It is an evidence that globalisation does not confine to commerce and industry alone. Ecology is going global.

Patricia Baldwin transformed her property into a wildlife habitat sanctuary in response to plans for a new subdivision near her home. She created diverse plantings including hedgerows, woodlots, meadows, and wetlands that provide food and shelter for local wildlife. The plantings have attracted many pollinators, birds, frogs and other animals. Over time, Patricia has continued expanding the native plantings and removing invasive species, resulting in a property that successfully mimics the area's natural habitats.
Emily Kngwarreye's painting "Earth's Creation II" represents different aspects of her homeland in Australia's Alhalkere region through vibrant colors. Turquoise greens signify the wet season when wildflowers bloom profusely across the land in vivid colors. Yellow dots depict the ground-covering yam plant, while red echoes the red sand and ochres and browns evoke the long dry season when the earth cracks under the sun. Her use of white pays homage to the seed of her Dreaming's main yam.

This document discusses the history and uses of sunflowers. It details how sunflowers were domesticated by Native Americans over 1000 BC for food and oil. Today, sunflowers are an important food source for many birds and small mammals. Planting sunflowers is an easy way to attract wildlife to your property, as over 40 species of birds consume the seeds. The black oilseed variety is particularly nutritious and a favored food. Whether growing a few in your backyard or planting acreages, sunflowers provide benefits to wildlife.
This is a series of photos, mostly taken in our garden and around London, recording the floral changes as the year progress. It shows the varieties of flowers that people grow in their garden London. As properties are becoming expensive, more high rises are being built and population is becoming more work orientated, the number of urban gardens in London is also disappearing. A recent study on aerial photos of London between 1998-99 and 2006-08, Analysis of the dat showed London’s green land dropped by 12% over the period. It also shows the about a quarter of Greater London land is used for gardening.
London has always a world city with a large proportion of its population originates from other parts of the world. Likewise as London also experiences the effect of a more connected world, in our gardens. It is common to see exotic flowers from many parts of the world. Cultivars and hybrids of naturally flowering species are being developed and marketed for the English gardens, like the Calla Lily from South Africa and Passion flowers from South American and Asia.
This slideshow consists of photos taken in the year 2014 February to 2015 January, documenting the flowers in our garden and in our neighbourhood in London.

This newsletter from Maypop Hill Nursery discusses creating a garden that provides food for caterpillars and the birds that eat them. It recommends native plants that caterpillars use as hosts, such as milkweed and violets. The newsletter explains that caterpillars are an important food source for baby birds and lists trees and shrubs that attract large moth caterpillars. Pruning bushes and trees can encourage new growth that attracts more insects. The garden is also home to lizards that eat moths and rodents like chipmunks and squirrels that forage for food.
The document is a trail guide for the University of Central Florida Arboretum. It provides an introduction to the trail and terms used in the guide. The guide concludes with contact information for the arboretum.
Plants are living things that make their own food through photosynthesis. They need water, minerals from the soil, air, and sunlight to survive. Plants have roots that take in water and nutrients, a stem that transports resources throughout the plant, and leaves that absorb sunlight to fuel photosynthesis. Plants reproduce through flowers and seeds, with pollination allowing seeds to form and disperse to create new plants.
This article discusses the unique Pima pineapple cactus and its relationship with its sole pollinator, the Diadasia rinconis bee. The cactus is small and hemispherical, found in southern Arizona, and produces bright yellow flowers once a day for one day in response to summer rains. It relies entirely on the Diadasia bee for pollination. The bee is also small, solitary, and specialized to feed only on cactus pollen. It lives in large underground nesting colonies and efficiently pollinates cactus flowers by climbing down their styles to collect pollen. Both species are threatened by habitat loss, so conservation efforts must consider maintaining corridors to allow for pollinator movement between
